Steven Brooks, the Democratic assemblyman arrested for threatening the Democratic leader, said he plans to come to Carson City this week, setting up a potentially tense situation as the Legislature prepares to review the state’s budget Tuesday night. “I’m innocent,” Brooks told Las Vegas journalist Jon Ralston. In a series of messages with the Las Vegas Sun, Brooks said that he would hold a news conference and planned to come to Carson City today. It was not entirely clear right now if Brooks would be allowed in the Legislative Building in Carson City.

I should like to advance a conjecture which I lack the qualifications to adequately develop: The global Left, and the Israeli Left most of all, perceives that the clock is running out, and has worked itself up into a froth of hysteria against Israel. The world of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” where there are no countries and no religions, is about to dissipate like last night’s marijuana fumes. The demographic time bomb that worries the Left is not the relative increase of Arab vs. Jewish populations between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River, speciously cited by John Kerry and a hostof

Sothy Seang drives to the Donut Hut in east Las Vegas almost every night around 7. He unlocks the door, turns on the lights, starts the fryer and makes hundreds of donuts. He doesn’t leave until after 11 a.m. the next day.(snip) But to Seang, life in Las Vegas is paradise on Earth. Before coming to America, the Cambodian native survived the horrors of Pol Pot, the communist dictator who killed at least 2 million people. Today, he is a gung-ho patriotic American citizen.

So far 513 Nevadans have purchased health coverage through the state´s health insurance exchange that went live Oct. 1. Harvey Whittemore gets 2 years

Calling the case “an incredibly criminal, intentional act,” a federal judge on Monday sentenced fallen Nevada power broker Harvey Whittemore to two years in prison and fined the former multimillionaire $100,000 for using family and employees to make illegal campaign contributions to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The announcement came at the end of a six-hour sentencing hearing that included an emotional statement from the 61-year-old Whittemore, an ex-lobbyist and wealthy land developer, in which he said he accepted full responsibility, was sorry and ashamed of his actions, and begged U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks for mercy.

Staff has split headline.

National union leaders criticized President Barack Obama’s signature health care law in a scathing letter sent earlier this month to Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. The signatories lambasted the law for “perverse incentives” that are already creating “nightmare scenarios” that could “destroy the foundation of the 40-hour workweek.” Largely seen as allies to the Democratic president, union leaders from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the United Food and Commercial Workers, and UNITE Here went public with concerns that could affect all workers, not just unionized employees.

Harvey Whittemore, once the most powerful lobbyist in Nevada and the head of a billion-dollar development company, was convicted Wednesday of using family and employees to funnel illegal campaign contributions to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2007. Whittemore, 59, could face a combined maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and $750,000 in fines on the three felony charges. U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks sent sentencing for Sept. 23. Whittemore´s lawyer Dominic Gentile said he will argue for probation, adding that similar cases had resulted in non-prison punishments, and then appeal the case.

The story of the Democratic assemblyman, arrested and accused of threats to a Democratic speaker after being found with a .357 revolver and 41 rounds in a shoebox in his trunk, has transfixed a state where politics inhabit a spectrum from weird to outrageous.

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has said that ´a trained ape´ could do a better job managing American interests in Afghanistan than President Obama. The retired Republican made the insult while doing a phone-in interview for Greta Van Susteren´s Fox News show on Tuesday. He argued that the President made a serious error by failing to negotiate a status forces agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Three Secret Service agents responsible for protecting President Obama in Amsterdam this week were sent home and put on administrative leave Sunday after going out for a night of drinking, according to three people familiar with the incident. One of them was found drunk and passed out in a hotel hallway, the people said. The hotel staff alerted the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands after finding the unconscious agent Sunday morning, a day before Obama arrived in the country, according to two of the people. The embassy then alerted Secret Service managers on the presidential trip, which included Secret Service

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company

Okay, THAT was certainly embarrassing. At the end of a joint news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in the Netherlands on Tuesday, the applause for Barack Obama came from a grand total of one guy. One. After thanking the crowd twice for suffering through his boring, standard worn-out spiel, Obama looked around the room, expecting the usual fanfare and applause he receives from his loyal followers back home. It never came. Instead, the Leader of the Free World was met with one slow, awkward clap. Question: was MSNBC’s Chris Matthews in the house?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said the fault of struggling to sign up on the Obamacare exchanges didn’t lie with the faulty website, but with the people who weren’t “educated on how to use the Internet.” Explaining the reasoning behind the latest Obamacare delay, Reid said too many people just didn’t know to use their computer properly and needed more time. Apparently, it had nothing to do with the well-documented failings of the website that have embarrassed the White House for months. “We have hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up who didn’t get through,” he said.

The Obama administration is prepared to give prospective Obamacare enrollees another half-month to signup for insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov, treating the law´s March 31 regulatory deadline as a formality for Americans who claim they tried in earnest to sign up in time. During a March 12 congressional hearing, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told Texas Republican Rep. Kevin Brady that there would be no such extensions. ´Are you going to delay the open enrollment beyond March 31?´ Brady asked. ´No, sir,´ she replied. As the U.S. Supreme Court weighed the constitutionality of a contraception coverage mandate Tuesday morning, a federal appeals court heard a separate legal challenge that could have much more sweeping implications for the future of President Obama´s health care law. And if the oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit are any indication, it’s time for the White House to start sweating over a lawsuit that up until now has flown relatively below the radar. At issue in the case are the subsidies that the federal government provides for individuals purchasing insurance through Obamacare. Though the text

Asked about this “delay” in the implementation of the ACA on Wednesday, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said that there has been no delay. On Tuesday night two things happened. 1. A trio of Secret Service agents were sent home from Amsterdam after one was found passed out drunk in a hotel hallway. 2. The Obama Administration announced (another) extension of the enrollment deadline for Obamacare signups. At first glance, these two events have little in common with one another. But, modern politics is all about narratives and storylines. And, both of these events confirm a growing concern from the public about President Obama: That he´s just not up to governing his administration and, by extension, the country, effectively.
