The Significance of
Obama’s Inaugural Address

Commentary Magazine, by Peter Wehner

Original Article

President Obama’s inaugural address was eloquent and moving in parts. It was also deeply partisan and polarizing, something that is unusual for a day normally devoted to unity and common purpose. But not in Barack Obama’s America. In his inaugural speech he did what he seemingly cannot keep himself from doing: portraying himself and his followers as Children of Light and portraying his opponents as Children of Darkness. You are either with Obama–or you are with the forces of cruelty and bigotry. In Obama’s world, there is no middle ground. He is the Voice of Reason

From the very beginning it has all been imaginary, illusory, contrived, and heroically help up and supported by legions of committed zealots, including the news media. The Obama presidency is a virtual presidency. Obama is a virtual man.

The chances of continuing to protect this virtual man and his virtual presidency from the slings and arrows of reality are very slim. The show cannot go on forever.

The holiday data breach at Target Corp. appeared to be part of a broad and highly sophisticated international hacking campaign against multiple retailers, according to a report prepared by federal and private investigators that was sent to financial-services companies and retailers. The report offers some of the first details to emerge about the source of the attack that compromised 40 million credit- and debit-card accounts and personal data for 70 million people. It also provided further evidence the attack on Target during peak holiday shopping was part of a concerted effort by skilled hackers. Parts of the malicious computer code

Three years after the Pentagon said it was de-emphasizing Europe in favor of the Asia-Pacific region, NavyAdm. Samuel J. Some autobiographies emerge from careful reflection, others from career calculation. Robert Gates’s “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War” seems the result of a good, long seethe. This is not to discount Gates’s compelling, sometimes self-critical, recounting of recent history — ample reason to read the book. But consider this judgment: “I saw most of Congress as uncivil, incompetent at fulfilling their basic constitutional responsibilities (such as timely appropriations), micromanagerial, parochial, hypocritical, egotistical, thin-skinned and prone to put self (and re-election) before country.” So much for the legislative branch of the U.S. government. Gates is an exceptionally competent, sober-minded public

By early 2011, writes former defense secretary Robert Gates, he had concluded that President Obama “doesn’t believe in his own [Afghanistan] strategy, and doesn’t consider the war to be his.” Not his? America is at war and he’s America’s commander in chief. For the soldier being shot at in the field, it makes no difference under whose administration the fighting began. In fact, three out of four Americans killed in Afghanistan have died under Barack Obama’s command. That’s ownership enough. Moreover, Gates’s doubts about Obama had begun long before. A year earlier, trying to understand how two senior officials could

A group of the nation’s leading environmental organizations is breaking with the administration over its energy policy, arguing that the White House needs to apply a strict climate test to all of its energy decisions or risk undermining one of the president’s top second-term priorities. The rift — reflected in a letter sent to President Obama by 18 groups, including the Sierra Club, the Environmental Defense Fund and Earthjustice — signals that the administration is under pressure to confront the fossil-fuel industry or risk losing support from a critical part of its political base during an already difficult election year.

In response to President Obama’s warning that he would use more executive orders in the coming months to achieve his policy agenda, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh scoffed, “This is just absurd,” Breitbart reported. Mr. Obama’s actual terminology on Tuesday was that he would rely on the executive power to “move the ball forward” in order to sidestep a stalled Congress. To Mr. Limbaugh, that’s the move of a dictator. “He’s basically bragging about the fact that he can do executive orders to make things ‘fair,’” Mr. Limbaugh said. “[His] entire economic policy has undermined the old saw about work

The Senate report says that as Islamist militants broke through the compound’s gate and began setting buildings on fire, diplomatic security agents retrieved their M4 carbine assault rifles. The agents then moved toward Building C to protect U.S. Ambassador J.
