| Sen. Marco Rubio is rallying conservatives behind immigration reform with a set of principles he unveiled this week and has promoted with a media blitz. Proponents of comprehensive immigration reform, who mainly reside on the left, are surprised that Rubio, a Republican from Florida, has generated so much positive buzz from conservatives. They see it as a promising sign that 2013 will be a more promising year for immigration reform than 2006 and 2007, which both began with high hopes that fizzled after a stalemate in Congress.

You add this to any immigration reform and I´m on board:
1. Mandatory E-verify for all hires and existing employees.
2. Those newly amnestized and any new immigrants legal or otherwise may not collect any government assistance for 5 years. No food stamps. No medicaid. No section 8. No cash assistance. No SS Disability.

Resolving this situation is the right thing to do, and long overdue. Politically, Obama has very effectively used the immigration issue as a club to hit Republicans with, and in doing so make great gains in the Hispanic community. Sadly, they are blind to the fact that Obama cynically used them on this issue. Anyway, time to disarm him on this with a real solution.

There are laws in place. Obey them. Respect them. Enforce them.
That is not too much to expect.
We are not so short of criminals and scofflaws ha we must import more.
And the concept of anchor babies is based on willful and foolish misinterpretation of law.

And enablers of criminality like Rubio, are beneath contempt.

Heard Rubio´s plan on hannity the other day,i don´t have any big problems with it. the real problem would be getting Obama to enforce the border and get serious about deportations. According the Rubio,40% of the illegals in this country are OTM´s on overstayed visas.
Under rubio´s plan it´s along,long way to citizenship.

#3, that sort of talk is good for ginning up folks, but in real life, we have to forumulate a plan that is doable and acceptable. I remain a fan of our old Guest Worker program. Perhaps that can be incorporated in some way.

I was around for immigration reform #1 under Reagan. What did it get the country? Ten times more illegal immigrants. If there are not significant penalities for illegal immigration, count me out of any reform plans.

Heard Rubio on Hannity also. His arguments are compelling and seem doable; doable being the operative word. I could listen to him talk for hours unlike say Axlerod who makes me want to...well, never mind what.
I´m very impressed with Marco every time I hear him. Just hope he doesn´t disappoint as has happened in the past with others.

I heard Sen. Rubio on Jim Bohannon last week and I too liked what he was saying. He did talk about the guest worker program, which I support. As I understand it there is a pathway for permanent legal residence, not citizenship. Rubio doesn´t offer this as a complete plan but I am open to listening more and giving consideration to his ideas and to those who have principled opposition.

The problem I have with all of these proposals is that they reward illegal conduct. There is no other way to put it. You´re subsidizing criminality. By what fevered stretch of the imagination is that to be considered a desirable approach? And if we reward it, nay, SUBSIDIZE it, we may expect to get more of it.
And we all know this.
We are hearing, and some are nodding approvingly, calls to ignore the law and to grant amnesty to those who, by their actions, have demonstrated disregard for our laws and culture. And who, by virtue of an amnesty, could then bring in the rest of the clan, presumably like-minded.
And this is supposed to be A Good Thing? How?
Traditionally, people came here to become Americans. Un-hyphenated at that.
These proposals, one and all, trash that.
No. A vigorous program of apprehension and expedited deportation, beginning with Aunt Zeituni, might be controversial, but that is due only to widespread criminal nonfeasance. That is reversible. Begin today.
