Sunday shows: Debts, guns and oaths,
not necessarily in that order

Investor´s Business Daily, by Andrew Malcolm

Apparently, there´s a presidential inauguration scheduled for this holiday weekend. The real one occurs Sunday out of general public view. The parties will then re-enact the ceremony for those watching TV around Monday noon on the King holiday. Less interest in this one, which is not surprising for second terms that often do not turn out so well for incumbents. One interesting historical footnote: This term of the 44th president marks only the second time in U.S. history that Americans have reelected three presidents in a row. Previously, only No. 3, 4 and 5 held that distinction:

Let me just save everyone the trouble:
MTP: David Gregory: "So, Governor Christie, you agree with me that Republicans are evil and you totally forsake them?"
Christie: "Gimme that gravy! Wheee! Wheee!"
FTN: Bob Schieffer: "So, Governor Charlie Crist, as one of the leaders of the conservative wing of the Republican party, what do you think of your peers now?"
Crist: "Oh, Robert, don´t let me COMMMENTH! Well. You know. I alwayth thought of a thertain thenator who will be nameless...hello, Marco! Well...there´s always hope."
TWwGS: George Stephanapoulus: "This week: A chance for the conservatives to state their case. Our panel: David Brooks. Former Senator Chuck Hagel. Governor Chris Christie."

From MTP via Ted Cruz´s Facebook page: "As the president readies for his second term, the two big issues he faces immediately could set the tone for the rest of his time in office: Guns and the national debt. We’ll talk with two key senators: Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York who is also chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies; and a new face in Congress, Republican Ted Cruz of Texas."

Or are we waiting to find out what Obama´s real name is?

#8: Obama´s father was a British subject. Obama is therefore Constitutionally ineligible for the office. The Presidency became vacant at the end of the term of our 43rd President, George W. Bush. Further, as the Constitution requires the President and Vice Presidential candidates to run together, as a ticket, the office of VP is likewise vacant.

So, as I said, we still don´t know who the 44th President will be.

Thanks for your post.

Contrary to popular conception about porky Americans, there is some good news today for the country´s toddlers (and their parents) as they begin the journey as the next generation of teens, then adults: A new federal study finds a significant drop in obesity in children between the ages of two and five. A 43% decrease, to be exact. [Snip] The obesity decline among U.S. pre-schoolers is the first optimistic sign in such a major nationwide study. And Obama’s White House was quick to hail Mrs. Obama.

Afghan combat puzzle: Why have

You may have seen news reports about Americans tiring of the war in Afghanistan, now our nation´s longest ever. Not surprising. What is surprising -- and hasn´t been widely noted -- is that it´s taken so long for a U.S. population famously addicted to instant gratification to tire of a deadly war that has so far claimed the lives of 2,313 countrymen and women. In previous wars since 1950 it´s been a mere matter of months before Americans were doubting the reasons for combat.

Hi, I’m Tom Cotton. I’m proud to represent the people of Arkansas in Congress. [Snip] Arkansans, like most Americans, have had their grit tested over the last several years through a financial collapse, recession, and a stagnant, jobless recovery. Barack Obama’s policies aren’t solving these problems — they’re causing the problem. The debt slows economic growth today and it places an immoral burden on our kids and grandkids.

Because even though our economy is growing, and our businesses have created about eight and a half million new jobs over the past four years, average wages have barely budged. Oh, geez. Here we go again. President Obama Wednesday stepped into the explosive political eruptions in Ukraine to gratuitously warn the embattled repressive government "there will be consequences if someone steps over the line." Seriously? After 1,856 days in office, this naive yokel, who promised he´d charm the world into loving America again, still cannot resist the temptation to utter empty threats to foreign leaders, threats that they know very well he has absolutely no intention of fulfilling, threats that diminish any surviving U.S. clout abroad.

Some people think Monday´s national holiday had something to do with commemorating the birthdays of two of the country´s greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Silly people. Monday was actually the fifth birthday of the stimulus spending bill signed by one of the country´s least great presidents, Barack Hussein Obama. Good morning. Few promises are more sacred than the ones we make to older Americans. Protecting the dignity and the security our seniors have earned is a commitment that spans generations and party lines. For example, during President Obama´s health care speech to Congress in the fall of 2009, he spoke directly to older Americans. “These steps,” he said, “will ensure that you — America’s seniors — get the benefits you´ve been promised.” Then, during a telephone town hall with seniors from around the country, he said he wanted to respond to what he called “hysterical claims” about his plan. “Here’s the truth..." he said,

Among the many costs of the Barack Obama presidency is an intentional corrosion for its own political gain of public faith in so many American institutions, among them Congress, the Supreme Court and the media. If numerous sectors of society are feuding or distrustful of each other, then a well-controlled central authority like a chief executive can more easily rule the pieces. It´s classic Chicago politics. Reporters Without Borders has released its annual World Press Freedom Index. What´s shocking is the United States’ ranking. During the fifth year of Obama´s reign the U.S. plummeted 13 spots to 46th.
