As I recall, this is the Mayor who allowed dozens of schoolbuses to languish in parking lots instead of using them to evacuate Katrina victims, no?

So another Democrat official of another Democrat State is found to be corrupt. Another Democrat Mayor of a large city is found to be corrupt. We are stunned.

When the left discovers that their Democrat President is corrupt, they too will be stunned, while we on the Right will still be wondering what took them so long.

Mayor Nagin, Democrat of New Orleans surely will blame Bush, exactly the way he did in the aftermath of Katrina.

I won´t register with the NYT so I don´t know if it was mentioned that Ray Ray was a cable TV exec before he became mayor.

Re #6: Louisiana is not a Dem state, New Orleans is a Dem city. LA has 7 congressional seats; six are Republican, one is Democrat. The Dem seat is obtained by means of a specially drawn, racially determined district to make the Feds happy. The ´special´ district is ....the New Orleans metro area. LA has one Repub US Senator and one Dem US Senator. The Governor of LA is a Republican (Bobby Jindal) and the Lt. Governor is also a Republican. Source: Wikipedia.

#6 and #9: New Orleans city government has been a cesspool of Democrat graft and corruption for my lifetime. Louisiana senator Mary Landrieu and the current NO Mayor, her brother Mitch Landrieu, are the children of the extremely effective political-machine operator and mayor, Moon Landrieu. Democrats, all. Ironically, Louisianans hoped that the election of Ray Nagin, a businessman, would break the machine cycle, but he simply increased and enlarged it.

There never was a mayor of any city I can think of who was a bad a mayor as Nagin was in his first term. yet NO reelected him! part of me says, NO, you deserve what you get.

Above and beyond the "school-bus" fiasco..what struck ME as most telling at the time was the fact that he pulled the disaster team OUT of the newly completed multi million dollar Disaster Response Center and moved to the Presidential Suite of a High Rise Hotel...where the floor to ceiling windows promptly blew out as the Hurricane hit, shutting down all communication and control(not to mention the elevators).

Yes, #11, but at the time of Katrina the governor was also a dim. In advance of the storm Bush told her to evacuate the city and call out the LA national guard and she blew him off.

# 16 - My aunt lost her house during Katrina. Had water up to the ceiling. She said they re-elected Nagin simply because of who was running against him - Mary Landrieu´s brother. They already had a disgusting Landrieu in Washington, they didn´t want one in New Orleans.

I guess maybe one of the issues will be ´phantom´ police officers. Drawing pay checks in the name of non-existent people. As for Kathleen Blanco, governor at the time, she refused two offers of help from Bush before the hurricane hit. She didn´t want the feds to take over. See how well that worked!

Not only did the article omit Nagin´s party affiliation, it also failed to mention that he is a black American. (I know the photo cleared that up). And there is one un-arguable fact concerning a fairly large segment of black America. And that is that once a black person gets elected to office, it´s ok for them to participate in all sorts of scams, kickbacks, fraud, and any scheme they can in order to enrich themselves and their family and friends. Because in their minds, the white man has been doing it all along. So now it´s there turn.

And don´t forget Nagin kept Bush waiting while he took a long hot shower on AF 1. His constituents were housed in slum like conditions at the Superdome and Convention Center, but he had to primp for the photos. This man reach his level of incompetence way before Katrina.

This guy won in 2002 with huge support & probably could have done anything. Instead, he squandered the mandate. I was once on the Board of a group that held its annual convention in New Orleans in 2003. Mayor Nagin was the luncheon speaker and we had a table set for our Board and a spot for him to sit & eat before speaking. He showed up with a posse of 7 and expected us to feed all of them! He also wanted them at his table. We did some quick chair movements and he ended up with 3 at our table and the rest nearby. They ate & drank like they were going to the gallows. Out of a dozen of so conventions I helped run, the only public official to ever pull a stunt like that was Mr. Nagin. I knew he was a crook from then on!

Am still wondering how federal charges finally came about, what with the present admin. in D.C.
LA Gov. Bobby Jindal is a conservative republican, but maybe he has some wonderful avenues into the feds.
Louisiana is a republican state, with N.O. a self contained pit of corruption within a fine State. There is so much evil in N.O. that people in Baton Rouge or Lafayette or Shreveport or Monroe or Alexandra do not want N.O. politicians in their cities. The mayor of Baton Rouge said on t.v. at the time of Katrina that Baton Rouge did not want those N.O. people in his city. I saw and heard him say that. The Oprah also met with same B.R. mayor on t.v. out on the streets of Baton Rouge later that day. She finally went away quietly.
Another thought is that Texas Gov. Rick Perry may be in cahoots with Gov. Jindal. Lots of N.O. crooks fled to Houston after Katrina. And also G.W.Bush lives in Texas, and maybe he still knows some in-roads with feds. Ah, so much intrigue and fun ahead!

I think Nagin had a nervous break down during Katrina and never recovered. He was originally elected after being promoted as a professional business man and seen as a bridge between the black and white communities. He was an upgrade from his predecessor, Mark Morial. Pre-Katrina, only a black could be elected mayor. Hopefully that´s in the past. I´m not a fan of the Landrieu family, but Mayor Landrieu has done well for New Orleans.
I cringe when I hear Rush and others bring up school busses - pre-Katrina it would of taken armed national guard troops going door to door dragging people out of their homes and forcing them on busses. Hurricanes were never that big of a deal and neither was Katrina except for the levee failure & then it was too late. Born and raised in N.O., I never evacuated and only evacuated for Katrina because of my elderly mother.

It doesn´t surprise me one bit that Nagin and Kilpatrick hot-footed it to D-FW. Dallas city government has its share of black corruption. A few black city councilmen and city vendors are now residing in federal prison. John Wylie Price (long-time racist commissioner) is now under FBI indictment to spend a few decades there himself. If he is familiar he is the one who said that a white commissioner who referred to wasteful spending as it going into a "black hole" was racist for saying that. He and his "soldiers" were marching and obstructing a residential street in front of the white lib female former mayor when Boing officials came to look Dallas over when they were deciding to relocate their corporate office. They promptly high-tailed it to Chicago. Chicago for Pete´s sake! Nagin would fit in nicely in Dallas.

In prison, being the Mayor of "Chocolate City" has an entirely different meaning.
