An American and up to thirty Britons who were being held by Islamist militants in Algeria have been killed in a botched air raid by Algerian forces. The raid, which was carried out in Algerian helicopters and special forces, was meant to wipe out the al-Qaeda-linked militants and free the 41 hostages from at least 10 countries, but instead left scores of people dead and injured. Two Americans escaped unharmed yesterday from the hostage standoff, a senior U.S. defense officials told Fox News. Militants said that seven Americans had been taken hostage and five other Americans who had been

Of course Obama didn´t know about it beforehand. Either he is considered so impotent as to be useless in such situations, or he´s covering for the botched rescue.

Either way...

Bones found in a box in a museum are believed to be those of King Alfred the Great or his son Edward the Elder, scientists from the University of Winchester have said. Archaeologists carried out an exhumation of the grave at St Bartholomew´s Church in Winchester, Hampshire, in March 2013 in a bid to find the last resting place of the ninth-century king. Tests have shown that those remains were not the influential warrior king but further investigations have uncovered a pelvis bone which had been in storage at Winchester City Museum from a previous excavation carried out at the

Israel has summoned the ambassadors of Britain, France, Italy and Spain, accusing their countries of pro-Palestinian bias. The Foreign Ministry said the envoys would be told that their "perpetual one-sided stance" is unacceptable. On Thursday, the four EU countries summoned Israeli ambassadors to object to plans to expand settlements in the occupied West Bank. White House staff are tip-toeing around revelations that the French president has a mistress as they face the awkward question of just who will be his plus one at a state dinner next month. Francois Hollande, 59, faced the world´s media for the first time on Tuesday after it was reported that he had been sneaking to a Paris apartment to meet up with 41-year-old actress Julie Gayet--unbeknown to his partner and France´s de facto first lady Valerie Trierweiler. California´s Latino population is going to overtake the white population in only two months, according to this year´s state budget report. The state is also getting older, with the population of over 65s predicted to hit a boom over the coming months. The state has been getting more diverse for a while, but now the Latino population will be ´the single largest race or ethnic group´, and it´s thought to be because most Latino groups are in their prime childbearing years. According to the 2013-2014 report, by March Latinos will make up 39 percent of California´s population of 38.2 million,

Soaring numbers of elderly care home residents and hospital patients are being physically tied up or subjected to “chemical cosh”medication, shocking research revealed yesterday. Vulnerable pensioners are being stopped from seeing their families and friends. And in some cases the restraints are illegal, according to a report released by the Care Quality Commission. The scandal underlines the need for the Daily Express Respect for the Elderly crusade. The watchdog’s figures showed that for those aged 75 to 84, there was an 81 percent jump in the number of so-called Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) applications made between 2009/10 and 2012/13.

Britons in Brussels are frequently told, typically with a little smirk, about our national superiority complex. We are the way we are, we’re informed, because we haven’t got over the loss of empire. The reason we don’t appreciate the EU is not that we have constitutional, economic or democratic objections, but that we are peculiarly pleased with ourselves. It’s one of the few national stereotypes allowed in today´s Europe. Indeed, it is trotted out so frequently and so breezily that many Euro-politicians think it wholly uncontentious.
