Zero Dark Thirty is already the most talked about film of the year. The Sony Pictures release about the 10-year hunt for Osama bin Laden has been nominated for five Academy Awards, and raked in an impressive $24 million in its first weekend on wide release, a huge figure for January, normally a quiet period at the US box office.[Snip]Zero Dark Thirty has also become the most controversial film of the year, with some members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (including Martin Sheen) calling for a boycott of the film for its depiction of the

A boycott?? Man, some people really are blinded by their politics. When did the Academy EVER boycott a film because of excessive violence, explosions, or bloodbaths? Accurate depiction of something that really happened, but they can´t allow it in case it makes a Republican look good!

The reviews I read all say that it´s extremely well done.

I went today to the matinee to see this film. It´s a great film and that is proven by the predictable outrage of the left when shown true heroism and patriotism in the face of evil.

I saw it. It was engaging, but not "great." The camera work was annoying. There were two disjointed parts of the movie: one part Hollywood feminist with the red-headed actress (who was OK in the role, but not particularly "great") and then the he-man part when the SEAL team went on their mission.

All that said, it was still pretty much a pro-American film with the expected politically correct angle against any harsh interrogation techniques. I do think it gave away too much information on our covert operations.

Ted Cruz, the rock-ribbed conservative Texas senator who figures to be a factor in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, told thousands of conservatives Thursday morning that the IRS should go the way of the dodo. ´We need to abolish the IRS,´ he said, calling instead for a flat income tax rate and a user-friendly tax return that can be filed on a postcard. That verbal gauntlet, thrown as much at a near-century of tax collection as at the Obama administration, was Cruz´s biggest applause line. ´By virtue of your being here today,´ he jokingly cautioned the nation´s largest annual gathering of politically conservative

The US bolstered its military forces across Eastern Europe on Thursday and imposed its first sanctions in an effort to force Russia to scale back its intervention in Ukraine. As European leaders met in Brussels, President Barack Obama denounced plans for a referendum on whether the occupied Crimea region should join Russia as “a violation” of international law. “We are well beyond the days when borders can be redrawn over the heads of democratic leaders,” he said. The World Health Organisation calls for sugar intake to be halved and Dame Sally Davis told a House of Commons Select Committee that “we may need to introduce a sugar tax”. This raises questions about the modern role of public health, which now seems most interested in nagging people about fairly minor lifestyle choices. [Snip] Vaccination traditionally helped to eradicate smallpox but continues to reduce the danger of killer diseases. This remained true of public health issues until a campaign against smoking started. This allowed the state to interfere in a lifestyle choice for the benefit of the individual’s health.

Texas held its primary balloting on Tuesday, as voters braved icy weather to head to the polls to choose the Republican and Democratic nominees for the general election in November. Republican Greg Abbott and Democrat Wendy Davis cruised to wins, setting up a big-spending fall showdown for the governor´s office. The move follows calls by some leading scientists and campaigners for the current recommended daily limits on sugar intake to be halved to 5 percent of an individual’s overall calorie consumption--the equivalent of six “level” teaspoons a day for the average adult. Martin Wolf had a typically wise and trenchant op-ed in the Financial Times yesterday on the difficulties which face newly democratising countries, from Ukraine to Egypt. He rightly identifies four key factors underpinning successful democracies. The first is active and empowered citizens, who accept the importance and inevitability of dissent, and are committed to peaceful processes of political change. The second is honest "guardians": those in official but unelected positions of power, be they bureaucratic, legal or military, who use that power in the service of the common good. The third factor is well-functioning markets, which create prosperity and allow

At Chipotle, guacamole costs extra - but it soon may not be available at all thanks to climate change. The Denver, Colorado-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants threatened to take the condiment off the menu because of the rising price of avocados. While the avocado crop is currently fine, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are predicting drier temperatures will lead to a 40 per cent drop in California´s avocado crop over the next 32 years.
