And Miles to Go Before We’re Taxed
Weekly Standard, by Ethan Epstein

Original Article

Give the environmental movement credit: When it comes to reducing vehicle emissions, it has won a stupendous victory. Since 1975, when the first federal mileage per gallon standards were introduced, the average mpg for American-driven cars has zoomed from less than 15 to nearly 35.(Snip)Because odometers are relatively easily tampered with (and besides, using odometers to gauge miles driven would require the government to engage in frequent and costly car mileage inspections), cars would almost certainly need to be outfitted with some form of government tracking device.

Average MPG was 15 and is now 35? What a crock.

The average of what? My brand new Ford F150 = 14.5.

My 1966 half ton Chevy 235 6 cylinder with three on the column back a few years with a ton of Aluminum ingots rolling down the highway at 65 (and no smoke) = 26mpg.

My wife´s Edge with all the "stuff" 24mpg.

I guess that stat includes all the 1 million mpg electric crap that drains the wall plug and stresses the coal generating plants!

Actually the mileage thing is easier that you´d want to believe. Most places require an annual vehicle inspection, including reading the odometer. Can you say "national data base"? Your bill´s in the mail.

Enough is never enough for the tax-and-spenders.

The Ukrainian parliament has declared president Viktor Yanukovich constitutionally unable to carry out his duties and set an early election for 25 May. Deputies in the assembly stood, applauded and sang the national anthem. Earlier, The Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko was reported to have been released from prison. The former prime minister was freed following a vote in Parliament this morning and is a further sign that the opposition has assumed the upper hand politically. Meanwhile, in a televised interview this afternoon, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych denied that he planned to resign. He claimed that all actions taken by

Seku has petitioned a New York court to declare him alive and has submitted a DNA test that he said proves his identity. SACRAMENTO — A “right” is an “entitlement” that’s not dependent on the whims of authorities. If you have a right to “free speech,” then you can speak as you choose. The courts let the government enforce a few standards, but it wouldn’t be a “right” if government officials got to preview and restrict what you were planning to say. That’s obvious, especially when it involves activities that are widely supported. It’s hard to find Americans who don’t agree with letting individuals have the widest latitude to speak and protest. But this apparently simple concept gets muddied with rights that are

Football player Michael Sam and basketball player Jason Collins each received a flurry of attention this week. None of it is due to their athletic talent or professional careers, but rather it is about their sexual preference. In both cases, that they have come out as gay is the most important aspect of all of the stories. Mentioning their sexual preferences as the most interesting aspect of the story, some excerpts from the last 48 hours: FoxSports.com: “Michael Sam’s historic NFL journey…” CBS New York: “…would be the first openly gay player in the NBA.” Sporting News: “With Michael Sam announcing himself as gay…” USA

Without Texas, President Obama would be facing a much worse economic situation, and Governor Rick Perry is holding out for a thank you. With the Lone Star state leading the nation in job creation the last five years, as well as creating nearly one-third of all American jobs over the last decade, Perry boasted about his state’s success during his time in office. “If it hadn’t been for Texas, the United States, for those mid-wage jobs in particular, would be underwater,” he told MSNBC. “I keep waiting for President Obama to call me and say, ‘Hey, thanks for saving our bacon

Democrats love to throw mud balls at the Koch brothers — David and Charles — because they’re successful entrepreneurs, and they’re generous with groups that promote the free-market values that enabled them to succeed. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee even sponsors a website, StoptheKochBrothers.com. The Brothers Koch are accused of “planning a GOP takeover in 2014” by spending $27 million on political campaigns around the country. The Democratic message is that wealthy Republicans should stay out of politics. When Tom Steyer, the billionaire onetime hedge-fund manager, promised the other day to spend up to $50 million of his own money

Kiev, Ukraine -- In Ukraine, neither protesters, opposition politicians nor embattled President Viktor Yanukovych had what they wanted Saturday after a week of bloodshed. Enthusiasm was muted for the peace deal brokered among them a day before by the foreign ministers of Poland, Germany and France. Hours before they signed the deal, Poland´s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski warned them not to expect perfection. "All sides need to remember that compromise means getting less than 100%," he said in a message on Twitter. If he upholds his end of the deal, Yanukovych will lose many of his powers soon -- and his office completely --

John Kerry’s phony climate war
New York Post, by Rich Lowry    Original Article

Secretary of State John Kerry is reporting for duty in the war against climate change. In a speech in Jakarta, Indonesia, he declared climate change “another weapon of mass destruction.” Indeed, in what might be news to the 50-megaton hydrogen bomb, he declared it “perhaps the world’s most fearsome weapon of mass destruction.” If climate change does not consider itself duly warned, it has only itself to blame. John Kerry has proven himself fully capable of supporting hostilities against dangerous enemies of the United States (that he then regrets, and campaigns against — but that’s another story).

Since former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke uttered the word "taper" in June 2013, emerging-market stocks and currencies have taken a beating. It is not clear why talk of (thus far) modest reductions in the Fed´s large-scale asset-purchase program should have had such big repercussions outside the United States. The best economic explanation is that capital has been flowing out of emerging markets in anticipation of future rises in U.S. interest rates, of which the taper is a harbinger. While plausible, that cannot be the whole story. For it is not only U.S. monetary policy that is being tapered. Even more

If you find yourself suddenly gaining access to a time machine, what’s the first thing you’d do? If you said “kill Adolf Hitler”, then congratulations; you’re a science-fiction character. Actually, the whole “access to a time machine” thing suggested that already, but the desire to kill Hitler clinches it. Any time-travelling sci-fi character (at least ones created by Western society) seems to want to kill Hitler, so much so that there’s a trope about how it’s impossible. That attempting to kill Hitler has become such a common sci-fi plot device speaks volumes. What about Stalin? He was arguably worse, killing 20

First conservative icon Thomas Sowell turned on Ted Cruz, now it appears that Ann Coulter is souring on the Texas Republican as well. Sowell published two columns this week slamming Cruz for being self-serving. Coulter praised the first of Sowell’s columns in a tweet Wednesday. Later, in an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” Wednesday night, Coulter doubled down on her praise of Sowell’s anti-Cruz column: ”I never push anyone else’s column but mine. Today everyone has got to read Thomas Sowell’s article.” During the “Hannity” segment, Coulter attacked tea party groups for being filled with “shysters” and “conmen,” naming specifically the Senate Conservatives

The apology came just a day after Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) urged Nugent to apologize for the remark. “Ted

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, may be the brightest light to adorn the Republican Party in many years. He knows how to make the case for conservative ideas, pointing, for example, to the contrasting fates of Detroit and Houston to illustrate the superiority of conservative policies. So it´s particularly galling to see that rather than train his fire at President Barack Obama and the liberal machine that cocoons him, Cruz has become a one-man wrecking ball against Republicans. His most recent foray into sabotaging his colleagues concerned the debt limit increase. Because Speaker John Boehner sent over a "clean" debt limit bill,

How much more are black people in this country supposed to take? On Saturday, a Florida jury failed to convict Michael Dunn for the callous murder of Jordan Davis. Though he was convicted of three counts of attempted murder and also on a gun charge, a mistrial was declared for the first-degree murder charge. He will face substantial jail time – perhaps up to 75 years on the four charges for which he was found guilty. Prosecutor Angela Corey has also publicly declared her intent to seek retrial on the murder conviction. However, she is the same prosecutor who oversaw the Zimmerman

Listening to pundits talk about the potential 2016 Republican field, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about Rick Santorum. The former senator’s strong second-place showing in 2012 shocked—even scared—the GOP’s kingmakers, who saw in him an abortion-hating firebrand with no chance of beating Barack Obama. So it’s no surprise that today, the party’s mainstreamers are acting like he’s old news, again dismissing a Santorum presidential candidacy. Not that he cares. He’s too busy plotting another possible run at the White House. In recent months, Santorum has gathered his inner circle of longtime advisers to sketch out a presidential campaign. Last year, Central Valley farmers received 20 percent of their normal allowance, and that figure is now set at zero percent. This marks the third dry year for the state, and Gov.
