Charleston software giant Blackbaud cuts 150 jobs, including about 50 locally

| Blackbaud Inc. laid off 150 employees today, including about 50 workers at the software company’s Daniel Island headquarters. A company spokeswoman said the job cuts stem from the still-sluggish economy and Blackbaud’s acquisition last year of Convio, a former competitor based in Texas. Convio’s legacy business has not performed as expected. Karoline McLaughlin, the spokeswoman, said the cuts are spread across the company’s offices, but only “a handful” of positions were cut at Convio’s former headquarters in Austin. [Snip] Following the cuts, Blackbaud will have about 2,600 employees. About 1,150 work on Daniel Island.

Comments: I wouldn´t call the company "giant," but the lay-offs might be a problem for those being let go in Charleston, at least. This is one of the companies that assisted in the Democrat presidential campaign. See

There was a spooky photo on that page but it´s gone now. It reminded me of The Prisoner.
As for the lay-offs: I guess the company didn´t get any contracts from the Obama administration. If you check it out at glassdoor.com, don´t read the first five or six most recent reviews. They look like fakes to this rigid skeptic.

Neighborhoods including Beverly Hills and Newport Beach in California, New Carrollton, Maryland and College Park, Georgia, were among the potential tax evasion clusters targeted for auditing, according to confidential IRS data. They were identified by the National Taxpayer Advocate using the IRS´s confidential tax return data. [Snip] About one-third of them were in California, with most near Los Angeles and San Francisco. Most of the others were in communities near Houston and Atlanta, and in the Maryland suburbs of Washington.

The al-Qaeda inspired terror cell, from Luton, also discussed attacking MI5, buying guns or driving a 4x4 car into crowded places, Woolwich Crown Court heard. Ringleader Zahid Iqbal, 31, helped organise for Jihadists to travel to Pakistan for extremism training overseas through an al-Qaeda contact he had there known as “Modern Sleeve”. But the cell decided to plan an attack in the UK after Iqbal lost contact with his secret contact in Spring 2011, Max Hill QC prosecuting, said. They discussed “multiple targets” but the men were under surveillance by MI5 and counter terrorism police who had listening devices in

Three times as much opium was produced in Helmand last year as when British troops went there in 2006, and a new UN forecast says that this year´s crop will be even higher. Opium is the raw material for heroin, and most of the illegal drugs for sale on the UK´s streets come from Afghanistan. Like many other farmers in Helmand province, Hamidullah planted cotton last year, encouraged by British and American agricultural advisers. But there was no market for it, and he planted opium poppies again this year. "The price of cotton is very low," he said. "It does

The UK´s "irrational" use of biofuels will cost motorists around £460 million over the next 12 months, a think tank says. A report by Chatham House says the growing reliance on sustainable liquid fuels will also increase food prices. The author says that biodiesel made from vegetable oil was worse for the climate than fossil fuels. Under EU law, biofuels are set to make up 5% of the UK´s transport fuel from today. Since 2008, the UK has required fuel suppliers to add a growing proportion of sustainable materials into the petrol and diesel they supply. These biofuels are mainly

The crackdown aims to claw back £1billion a year lost to a “scurrilous minority”. As part of a radical overhaul of the welfare system, repeat offenders will lose their benefits for 13 weeks, 26 weeks or three years, depending on the severity of their crime. Last year 10,000 people were caught cheating the system. Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith’s fresh war on the workshy will also see hit squads sent to flush out suspect claimants. He said: “We’re telling these repeat offenders--if you cheat the system, you could lose your benefits for up to three years.

What would Maggie do if she were still in power? According to Nigel Farage in today’s Times, she’d be supporting Ukip. I suppose he would say that; it’s rare for someone to say “if x great person who we all love were alive today he’d probably think I was a total imbecile”. I’ve always admired George Orwell and like to think that were he around today he would agree with me in every single way and possibly want to be my best friend, when in reality he’d probably think I was a bit of a gimp.

Ding dong, the Soviet Union is dead! Ding dong, communism is dead! And so is the British disease. They are all dead as doornails--the myth of this country’s inevitable decline, the habit of capitulating to the unions, the belief in state control of everything from motor manufacturers to removals firms, taxation rates at 98 percent: all the Lefty nostrums of the post-war epoch. Down, down inside the Pyongyang Metro stands a statue of the Eternal Ruler of North Korea, Generalissimo Kim Il Sung – dead these past 19 years but still calling the shots. Brainwashing cast in bronze. The regime’s florid propaganda blares from loudspeakers: ‘The pure white snows of our sacred mountains’ artillery will wipe the filthy enemy from existence.’ Or something like that. [Snip] I’ve reported from Ceausescu’s Romania, Saddam’s Iraq, Gaddafi’s Libya, Mugabe’s Zimbabwe and the Ayatollahs’ Iran – but after eight days undercover in North Korea, I believe this regime is the most frightening tyranny of all.

COLUMBIA—South Carolina’s unemployment agency will lay off 100 employees in June as part of a statewide reorganization that directs anyone seeking jobless benefits to use its upgraded online system, the agency’s interim director announced. John Finan said the Department of Employment and Workforce will eliminate one-on-one help with unemployment claims on June 10, and the number of local offices offering job training and other re-employment services will shrink. Exactly how many of those 56 offices remain open past June will depend on decisions made by the state’s 12 workforce investment boards, he said.

A single half-muffled bell will toll from St Paul’s to greet the funeral cortege of Baroness Thatcher on Wednesday. In front of the coffin, Michael and Amanda Thatcher will lead the procession for their beloved grandmother. They will carry on cushions the Order of the Garter and the Order of Merit, two of the highest honours the Queen can bestow. [Snip] The ceremonial funeral, meticulously planned by the former prime minister, reveals her profound Christian faith. A strong Methodist upbringing was the bedrock from which Lady Thatcher built her political creed of self-reliance and personal responsibilty.

On his Friday show, syndicated talk show host Mark Levin said that a Republican congressman is attempting to persuade one of his affiliates to remove his show from the airwaves. Although Levin would not offer the congressman’s name on air, he has been a vocal critic of various members of the House Republican leadership in the past. But Levin called the situation “fascism.” “Well, it has come to my attention that there is a Republican congressman out there who doesn’t like what I’ve been saying,” Levin said. “It has come to my attention that there is a

Few Americans can not answer this question: who is the worst domestic mass murderer in United States’ history? Due to the United States media, most are aware that Timothy McVeigh slaughtered 168 people with a bomb in 1995. Most Americans also know the names of our three most monstrous serial killers: “The Green River Killer” Gary Ridgeway, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy. The U.S. media is again responsible for the general awareness of these men; these stories deserved — and received — national attention due to our common interest in personal safety, the rule of law

Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

Here is something I don’t understand: liberals are often revealed as vile, vulgar hatemongers–not all of them, of course, but far too many–yet they never seem to pay a penalty at the polls. Why is that? Margaret Thatcher’s death has been the latest occasion for the Left to show its true stripes. All across the U.K., there have been demonstrations–vulgar at best, and violent at worst. In Bristol, lefties celebrating a Thatcher “death street party” started fires, destroyed property and battled police: This evening in Trafalgar Square, liberals have turned out for a long-planned celebration of Thatcher’s death:

Newtown killer Adam Lanza’s mother considered suing Sandy Hook Elementary School after teachers turned a blind eye to beatings from his classmates, a family member claims. The relative, speaking to the Daily News, claimed that mass murderer Lanza was taunted and attacked by fellow students at his childhood alma mater. “Nancy felt fiercely protective of him,” the relative said. “She was convinced the school wasn’t doing enough to protect Adam. It made her irate.” Nancy Lanza — gunned down by her 20-year-son to start his Dec. 14 rampage — even tagged along with Adam to school

The impending introduction of legislation to overhaul the country’s badly strained immigration system received an extraordinary endorsement on Sunday from Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, who, after holding back for weeks, appeared on no fewer than seven television talk shows to explain and defend a plan that he said would be “a net positive for the country, now and in the future.” It was a striking show of confidence from Mr. Rubio, one of eight members of a bipartisan Senate group that has been crafting a plan to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants;

Is media bias to blame for lack of Gosnell coverage? Or something far more banal? The trial of Philadelphia doctor Kermit Gosnell would seem to have all the elements of a spectacular news story: shocking allegations, horrifying visuals, sympathetic victims. Yet until late last week, much of the national media was silent as testimony about Gosnell’s alleged “house of horrors” abortion clinic rolled out. Much of the media attention outside Philadelphia, in fact, centered on how little media attention the story was receiving outside Philadelphia.

President Obama and I were college classmate at Columbia University, class of ’83. I know all too well how mindlessly liberal the students and faculty of that institution can be, and Barack Obama is certainly no exception. My time at Columbia made it crystal clear: liberals always believe they are morally superior. [Snip] It is in this cesspool of intolerance that Obama and his Marxist cronies hatched a secret plan to destroy our country. There are two things you need to know about Obama at Columbia University. First, he was Pre Law and a Political Science major- just like me.
