Mark Sanford: I’m Running for Congress

| Mark Sanford, the three-term congressman and two-term South Carolina governor, is preparing his political comeback, running for the House in the district recently represented by Tim Scott. Sanford garnered national headlines in 2009 as the first governor to turn down President Obama’s stimulus funds — and then made even bigger headlines later in the year when it was revealed that he had departed the state to fly to Argentina to meet with his mistress. A messy divorce followed; a state legislative ad hoc committee voted to censure but not impeach him. He served out the remainder of his term,

Comments: This is an interview, giving Sanford the room to justify his running and answer charges against him.

Agree with #1. Sanford showed so much promise, but threw his responsibilities and credibility aside to indulge his personal desires. Works for Democrats, not for us.

Mark Sanford made a mistake. And, instead of dodging the issue, he admitted his mistake live on TV. This alone makes him qualified for a 2nd look, because no politician has ever, EVER confessed to a error in judgment like he did and stood up to the consequences.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Can´t the party do any better? It´s not as though he´s asking to stay in office. He´s asking to be endorsed for an office he´s never had.

#11, slight correction--Sanford and the lady are engaged, not yet married. I agree with #11 and #52.
Any parent who would shower all forms of media, including talk shows, with intimate details of her "victimization", when the possibility of the couple´s four sons watching, reading or hearing is close to 100%, is not what I would call a good mother or a rational person.
I believe it´s highly possible that Mrs. Sanford wanted to be First Lady and was furious when Sanford told her he did not want to run for president. If that is close to the truth, then one should not be surprised that Sanford sought comfort elsewhere.
He slashed our county real estate taxes and I like him very much if only for that reason.

Forget about the infidelity or relations with his wife - this guy lied about where he was and what he was doing WHILE he was Governor. This was not just a "mistake", this is a fundamental disqualifier for him to EVER hold office again.
He has proved that whenever he faces a conflict between his personal wants and his public duty, his personal wants will win. And that he has NO PROBLEM repeatedly lying to the public about what he´s up to.
And THIS is a guy you think should be qualified for office? Let me guess, because you "believe" him when he claims he stands for "conservative values"???
Of course he only lies to the other women, never to you!!!

Whether or not I can forgive Sanford personally has nothing to do with whether he should run on the Republican ticket. The party purports to stand for better moral values than the Democrats. It is bad enough when someone in already in office screws up. Why elect someone who lied to and cheated on his wife and who neglected his duties as governor (remember the "Appalachian trail" disappearance?) to pursue his love affair. No thanks.

A battle has been brewing in the Republican Party for some time, long before President Obama was re-elected this past November. On one side is the big business Washington establishment represented by K Street lobbyists and the Chamber of Commerce. On the other side are populist, main street, grassroots conservatives represented by the Tea Party and Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint. Few issues divide the Republican Party more clearly along these lines than immigration reform. And this week, the battle just got ugly.

“Counter-revolutionary” is an apt term for these days: President Obama has promised to make a fundamental transformation, a veritable revolution in American society and culture. Those who oppose such an ongoing agenda are suspected of all sorts of racism, nativism, misogyny, homophobia, and general counter-revolutionary activity. Sam Parnia MD has a highly sought after medical speciality: resurrection. His patients can be dead for several hours before they are restored to their former selves, with decades of life ahead of them. Parnia is head of intensive care at the Stony Brook University Hospital in New York. If you´d had a cardiac arrest at Parnia´s hospital last year and undergone resuscitation, you would have had a 33% chance of being brought back from death. In an average American hospital, that figure would have fallen to 16%

In that speech of his, 30 years ago, Reagan said, I know this is a formidable technical task, one that may not be accomplished before the end of this century. Yet current technology has attained a level of sophistication where it’s reasonable for us to begin this effort. It will take years, probably decades, of effort on many fronts. There will be failures and setbacks, just as there will be successes and breakthroughs. Yes — failures and setbacks, and successes and breakthroughs. The economist Thomas Sowell has just released a new book entitled Intellectuals and Race. (Snip) AmSpec: In the book you have a definition of “multiculturalism.” Can you talk about that and its implications? Sowell: The central premise of multiculturalism is that no culture is superior to another. The proponents of this draw conclusions such as it is wrong for school teachers to insist that black kids from the ghetto speak standard English. The idea that no culture is superior is another fact-free premise. If you look at the actual history of any society, they borrow from other societies.

The economist Thomas Sowell has just released a new book entitled Intellectuals and Race. The American Spectator sat down with him recently for a lengthy interview. In this first part of the interview, we discuss some of the causes of differences between ethnic groups, and how intellectuals in the early 20th century viewed race versus intellectuals today. Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
