Former Gov. Sanford, former
Sheriff Nash joining 1st District race

Two former and controversial political figures are now in the 1st Congressional District race, though one is a bigger surprise than the other. As expected, two-term Gov. Mark Sanford will formally join the field today by issuing a press statement confirming that he will go after the seat he held for three terms previously, beginning in the 1990s. The move will be his first ballot test among Republicans and other voters since the final months of his term as governor were overshadowed by his affair with an Argentine woman, now his fiancee. Meanwhile, former Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash also

Seriously, isn´t there anyone down there that can discreetly tell Sanford to go away?

I don´t think discreet would make any impression on him. We should just tell him to his face: Go Away, Mr Sanford. You have no character, we don´t need you.

How did a high school drop-out

The man behind one of the most significant leaks in U.S. history has revealed himself as a high school drop-out who turned against his government when he realized it was ´doing far more harm than good´. As Edward Snowden steps from the shadows to explain his reasons for leaking information from the National Security Agency, questions are emerging over how the failed student rose up the ranks to become gatekeeper of the government´s biggest secrets. Snowden, 29, spoke to The Guardian from a hotel room in Hong Kong where he is on the run after leaking sensitive documents on

President Barack Obama marked the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy-era Equal Pay Act on Monday with an energetic celebration, but women in his administration continue to earn significantly less than men. An analysis of his administration´s 2012 Annual Report to Congress on White House Staff shows that the median wage for female professionals in the Executive Office of the President was $9,000 less last year than for their male counterparts. Congress passed the law in 1963. ´The day that the bill was signed into law,´ Obama said, ´women earned 59 cents for every dollar a man earned on average

Mark Sanford, Lindsey Graham

News of two expansive U.S. surveillance programs has sparked a national discussion on security versus privacy and civil liberties. [Snip] U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the programs "very helpful for us when it comes to national security." U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford’s reaction was almost exactly the oppose. He said the data mining is "out of control" and has "no regard for constitutional rights." "I think that they’ve crossed a tripwire," Sanford said. "As a conservative, it’s more than alarming. And frankly, it’s very disturbing."

Now some practical jokers have made their view of the sustainable town clear, by altering a road sign to direct drivers heading to the development to the “Ugly Buildings”. Poundbury, an extension of Dorchester, the former county town, has polarised opinion since work began in the mid 1990s. The estate is famous for mixing different continental styles and for using non-local building materials, which has led to derision from many, including those in the architectural community who have criticised its toy-town style. Now one vandal with an eye for aesthetics has used the very public forum to express

A new and annoying species of ant is terrorizing the U.S. and chemicals that kill off other types of the insect are proving ineffective against it. The ´crazy´ ant, named for the erratic trail it leaves as it makes its way across the country, originated in Argentina and Brazil. But since it was first spotted in Houston in 2002, it has spread to some 21 counties in Texas, 20 counties in Florida and a few locations in Mississippi and Louisiana. Edward Snowden, who has identified himself as the source of leaks about US surveillance programmes, is believed to be holed up in a hotel in Hong Kong. Mr Snowden told The Guardian he flew to Hong Kong on 20 May, after leaking information about the National Security Agency´s surveillance programme. He said that he chose Hong Kong because the city has "a spirited commitment to free speech and the right of political dissent". Mr Snowden´s current whereabouts cannot be confirmed, and the Hong Kong government has not publicly commented on his case, although journalists are staking out various hotels in

When we talk about Orwell and 1984, it’s usually Winston Smith we’re focused on: the guy who realises things have gone terribly wrong, that he’s working for a corrupt and corrupting system. But what about the apparatchiks of Airstrip One who are entirely comfortable with the way things are, happy just to fit in, to prostrate themselves before the Telescreen? Those nameless functionaries sprang to mind when I read the thoughts of American technology evangelist Robert Scoble on the NSA Prism leaks. They said that if you vote Romney you’ll get a return to George W Bush. Well, Romney may have lost in 2012 but people got Bush all the same – Obama has cheerfully continued and expanded the authoritarian policies of Dubya. That’s the opinion of Michael Hayden, the former director of the US National Security Agency, who says that the state is bigger and more furtive than it was when Bush was in charge. It’s the kind of Right-wing talking point that would’ve been dismissed as a Right-wing talking point a month ago. But, in the light of the

Barack Obama has ordered senior intelligence officials to compile an overseas target list for U.S. cyber attacks. In a Spanish-language interview Sunday with the network Univision, Sen. Marco Rubio, the leading Republican on the Gang of Eight comprehensive immigration reform group, made his strongest statement yet that legalization of the nation’s 11 million currently illegal immigrants must happen before any new border security or internal enforcement measures are in place, and will in no way be conditional on any security requirements. “Let’s be clear,” Rubio said. “Nobody is talking about preventing the legalization. The legalization is going to happen. That means the following will happen: First comes the legalization.

That didn’t take long. The official who leaked top-secret information about the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs to fight terrorism has now come forward in the pages of the Guardian to revel in his role “as one of America’s most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning.” Edward Snowden is described as a 29-year-old high school dropout who worked (ironically) on computer security for the CIA before becoming a highly paid contractor at Booz Allen, making a reported $200,000 a year working for the National Security Agency in Hawaii. The Guardian story presents him as a martyr

For several months, the Benghazi scandal lay dormant, apparently forgiven and forgotten. Then, inexplicably, it reared its ugly head when Congressmen Ron Johnson and Jason Chaffetz smelled Obama´s blood in the water. After feigning affliction with the flu, and then ostensibly tumbling down a carpeted stairwell resulting in an unconfirmed concussion, then-Secretary of State Clinton was finally forced to testify before Congress. The New England Patriots will sign Tim Tebow, league sources told ESPN. The Patriots are signing Tebow, who is expected to participate in the team´s mandatory minicamp Tuesday, as a quarterback, according to sources. The move reunites Tebow with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who was the Broncos' head coach when Denver traded into the first round to draft the Heisman Trophy winner in 2010. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick often has spoken with admiration for Tebow's versatility, intelligence and character. Mickey Kaus has produced an excellent, easy-to-use “pocket guide” to the reasons why the Schumer-Rubio immigration reform bill (S.744) is fraudulent. Kaus catalogues the provisions of the bill that promise tough future enforcement, etc. but don’t do what they pretend to do: “Multiple triggers” — Legalization is immediate. DHS just has to write border “plan.” The most any “triggers” can possibly do is delay green cards and citizenship. “90% effectiveness” — If not reached, triggers only toothless commission “Pay back taxes” — Only if already “assessed” by IRS (unlikely).
