Justice Minister Tzipi Livni announced late Monday night that she had appointed renowned Prof. Ruth Gavison to draft a constitutional provision defining the exact dimensions of what it means for Israel to be a “Jewish and democratic state.” Livni highlighted that this was the “first time” that a comprehensive effort on this issue was being undertaken, implying that prior efforts had been targeted at narrow aspects of the issue. She added that this definition was necessary in light of “the substantive societal and legal dispute, and the many proposed laws in which every part of the political map is trying

China’s New Leadership Takes

Hong Kong — Communist Party cadres have filled meeting halls around China to hear a somber, secretive warning issued by senior leaders. Power could escape their grip, they are being told, unless the party eradicates seven subversive currents coursing through Chinese society. These seven perils were enumerated in a memo referred to as Document No. 9 that bears the unmistakable imprimatur of Xi Jinping, China’s new top leader. The first was “Western constitutional democracy”; others included promoting “universal values” of human rights, Western-inspired notions of media independence and civil society, ardently pro-market “neo-liberalism,” and “nihilist” criticisms of the party’s traumatic

The White House was given advance notice of the British government’s plans to detain the partner of the Guardian reporter who has written a series of high-profile stories about U.S. surveillance practices, a spokesman said Monday. In the daily White House briefing, spokesman Josh Earnest declined to condemn the detainment and didn’t directly answer questions about whether U.S. officials expressed any concern to their British counterparts about the U.K.’s plans. “This was something we had an indication was likely to occur,” Mr. Earnest said. “But it’s not something we requested.” David Miranda, the partner of Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald, was

Following the Egyptian example, a group of activists has launched a Palestinian version of the Tamarod (rebellion) Campaign to remove Hamas from power in the Gaza Strip. Tamarod is the name of the grassroots movement in Egypt that led the campaign to oust President Mohamed Morsi. The Palestinian group on Monday shared a video announcing a series of anti-Hamas activities as of November 11. "Repression and tyranny have arched their peak and we can no longer remain silent," the group said in the video. "The time has come to reject death under Hamas´s security club."

Just because “30 Rock” is no longer on the air doesn’t mean Tina Fey’s resting on her laurels. It’s been little more than six months since the sitcom had its last hurrah on NBC and the funnywoman, who signed a four-year development deal with Universal Television last fall, has already sold two sitcoms — and that’s just in the past week. After a reported bidding war, Fox scooped up a comedy about a women’s college that decides to admit men for the first time. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the network placed a rare full-series order for the comedy

WikiLeaks quickly responded: “We have written to TIME magazine to ask for Michael Grunwald’s resignation.” “Time must show that journalists calling for the murder of other journalists, or, indeed, anybody, is never acceptable,” Wikileaks added.

From his first presidential campaign to the present, the president, his party and his administration have openly flouted existing laws, and it doesn´t seem there is any legal means of stopping him short of impeachment. As you may recall, the Democrats refused to fill vacant spots on the Federal Election Commission so that when the Obama campaign disabled the system to track contributions there was no way in 2008 to challenge and stop the practice and countless suspicious contributions, including many from overseas, found their way into his coffers.

"So, how many black friends do you have now?" It´s a question I get asked a lot, ever since I set out five years ago to find out why I, your typical middle-class white person, had no black friends at all. I do have black friends now, actually. Several. But I rarely offer that information when asked, because to ask white people how many black friends they have is to pose the wrong question. The 16-year-old girl’s once-beautiful face was grotesque. She had been disfigured beyond all recognition in the 18 months she had been held captive by the Comanche Indians. Now, she was being offered back to the Texan authorities by Indian chiefs as part of a peace negotiation. To gasps of horror from the watching crowds, the Indians presented her at the Council House in the ranching town of San Antonio in 1840, the year Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. ‘Her head, arms and face were full of bruises and sores,’ wrote one witness, Mary Maverick. ‘And her nose was actually burnt off to the bone.

Critics say a Muslim group picked the wrong day — Sept. 11 — to march on Washington to complain about religious profiling and President Obama’s handling of an investigation into the terror attacks that rocked America 12 years ago. The mass demonstration, called the "Million Muslim March," was changed to a more mainstream-sounding event, "Million American March Against Fear," but the name did not seem to gain much traction and has apparently reverted back to its original title. American Muslim Political Action Committee (AMPAC), which is organizing the march, claims Muslims nationwide have been the victims of anti-Islamic bigotry in

Washington — Clinton nostalgia is being replaced by Clinton neuralgia. Why is it that America’s roil family always seems better in abstract than in concrete? The closer it gets to running the world once more, the more you are reminded of all the things that bugged you the last time around. The Clintons’ neediness, their sense of what they are owed in material terms for their public service, their assumption that they’re entitled to everyone’s money. Are we about to put the “For Rent” sign back on the Lincoln Bedroom? If Americans are worried about money in politics,

Nearly five years after moving into the White House, Michelle Obama could not look more at home. Posing in the formal Green Room, she appears both relaxed and invigorated, embracing the undefined (and undefinable) roles of Spouse in Chief, Role Model in Chief, and Mom in Chief. But it’s the last one that makes the first lady shine brightest of all. Put her in a room with kids—whether her own or the nation’s—and she glows.

The military judge presiding over the case of the Fort Hood shooter has blocked several key pieces of evidence that prosecutors said would explain the mindset of the soldier accused in the 2009 rampage. On Monday it was revealed that the judge has banned prosecutors from giving any speculation into Major Nidal Hasan’s motive in the shooting that left 13 dead and 30 others wounded, including the belief that he felt he had a ‘jihad duty’ to carry out the attack. Prosecutors had asked the judge to approve several witnesses and various evidence to support what they allege motivated Hasan

With the latest major revelation about National Security Agency surveillance, there’s a huge taboo question that needs to be put out on the table: Has President Obama been deliberately lying about the NSA, or have his statements just been repeatedly “wrong”? After Barton Gellman’s blockbuster story today about the NSA breaking “privacy rules or overstepp(ing) its legal authority thousands of times each year,” the Washington Post published an attendant commentary with a headline declaring the president was merely “wrong” in last week suggesting that the NSA wasn’t “actually abusing” its legal authority. The implication is that when Obama made that comment
