Washington — The approval late Tuesday of a $50.6 billion Sandy aid package in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives raised hopes among its supporters that federal money would begin flowing into storm-battered New Jersey within months. Just how quickly that will happen, however, was not immediately clear late Tuesday, after the House approved the measure with a 241-180 vote that exposed painful divisions among Republicans. Officials said the Senate is expected to approve the measure next week and send it to President Obama for his signature as Memorial Day — and the start of the lucrative summer season at

Note that nothing was given to Texas after it was damaged by drought and fire. Why? It´s a red state.
Just what Americans want: A President who plays favorites with taxpayer money.

Assuming the average family´s income in the US is about $70,000 per year, what do they pay in Federal income tax? 15%? That would be about $10,500 dollars per family. How many families would it take to pay the $50,000,000,000 for this aid? I make it to be about 4,762,000 families or there about. How many tax-paying families do we have left in this country? This is only a small part of the Federal expenditures each year and the taxes paid by these families are probably needed by them.

But, that´s Liberalism - spread the misery equally.

So you have a lucrative summer season coming up but taxpayers have to fork over money to fix these places up.Why shouldn´t they have to pay the government back over a period of years?

Why don´t people in coastal areas have to pay through the nose for flood insurance. How much of this money is going to replace people´s yachts?

Please consider that we have owned a beach home at the Jersey Shore since 1983 and have paid flood insurance all that time. FEMA is only paying a very small amount ($49,000)for remediation of the water damage even though the policy has a $250,000 limit. We would have had more money if we put that flood insurance money into a separate account. Vacations for our family are at the beach, with no travel to other destinations. The money from the government is needed for dredging the bay, as homes, boats, cars, debris have displaced the bay water and the channels are gone. This is the infrastructure that needs money, and no one has a yacht replaced. That is separate boat insurance if they even get a penny. How much has the US given to foreign countries for every disaster? Charity begins at home.

@11 Are you getting nothing from your flood insurance? That doesn´t sound right. It´s not right that our government can pick and choose who gets help when disasters occur. You´re somewhat lucky. When Hurricane Charley hit our home in August 2004, FEMA said we had a job, money in the bank and insurance. So therefore we get zero, zip, nada for all those taxes we´ve been paying all our working lives.
