The Wages of Unemployment
Wall Street Journal, by Richard Vedder

Original Article

Posted By:Desert Fox, 1/15/2013 7:25:05 PM

From the mid-17th century to the late 20th century, the American economy grew roughly 3.5% a year. That growth rate has since declined significantly. When the final figures are in for 2012, the annual rate of real output growth for the first dozen years of this century is likely to be about 1.81%. What accounts for the slowdown? An important part of the answer is simple: Americans aren´t working as much today. And this trend reflects more than the recession and sluggish economy of the past few years.

Mr. Vedder is a mean heartless man who has no problem seeing children starve, the disabled ignored sitting in their own waste and the unemployed abused by suggesting that they look for work. Obviously he is a Republican. s/o If we don´t get on the stick and fix this problem - well, you know. We will be in the fast lane to disaster.

JOBS = Revenue. We wouldn´t have to borrow if there were jobs.

What nobody is counting is the human capital cost--millions, especially highly skilled people 40-60+ who should be peaking in responsibility, business generation and nurturing the next generation of managers NOW and instead are sitting on the sidelines. Chaos is not breeding creativity for the most part. Net net, it is pure destruction for the most part without the creativity.

Trust me, everyone who falls into that category does not want to be on unemployment. The stories are pretty similar where I am. You don´t get considered because you´re overqualified. Being older and auditioning for a marketing manager position in an early-stage health tech company run by 40 year olds is an example. Even though you succeeded recently with early-stage companies just like theirs, if they give you a hearing, they don´t want ´mom´ (as they see it) on board. It hurts and takes its toll. And when you are over 50, retail and service jobs will give you a pass (been laughed at!) Another factor--many companies are gradually running into the ground and that breeds all kinds of dysfunction. Welcome to the Obummer Economy, Crony Capitalism and The Socialist US!

#3 I experienced the exact same thing when I got laid off at the big airplane manufacturer in St. Louis after Mr. Cheney cancelled the A-12 contract in January 1991. I was 45 years old. My name was pencilled in on the lay off letter after the name of a 55 year old female was blacked out. 10,000 people were laid off at the same time and I didn´t find a job until August. I know exactly what you and all others who WANT to work are going through and it isn´t pretty. My heart goes out.

How can bringing more immigrants into the situation help, especially those with advanced degrees ?

Money makes the world go around and the unemployed can´t stimulate the economy, or buy green cars.

This Vedder and WSJ are blind as bats.

There are fewer people working because all the jobs were shipped to China.

Yes, yes, comparative advantage, and just how is that working for ya?

NORTH KOREA is a tiny dictatorship with a bankrupt economy, but its leaders are remarkably adept at manipulating global public opinion. In recent weeks, we have been exposed to yet another brilliant example of their skill. Scores of foreign journalists have been dispatched to Seoul to report on the growing tensions between the two Koreas and the possibility of war. Upon arrival, though, it is difficult for them to find any South Koreans who are panic-stricken. In fact, most people in Seoul don’t care about the North’s belligerent statements: the farther one is from the Korean Peninsula,

CHICAGO — First lady Michelle Obama, with tears in her eyes and her voice cracking, spoke out for the first time here Wednesday about the gun violence afflicting young people in cities across the nation. She took a rare step for any first lady into the legislative fight of the hour, saying her husband, President Obama, is “fighting as hard as he can, and engaging as many people as he can, to pass common-sense reforms to protect our children from gun violence.” “These reforms deserve a vote in Congress,” she said, drawing loud applause from hundreds of Chicago’s

A group of high-profile social conservatives warned Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in a letter this week that their supporters could abandon the GOP if the party seeks to change its position on social issues, particularly same-sex marriage. Thirteen social conservatives, representing various influential groups, wrote Priebus ahead of the RNC´s quarterly meeting this week in Los Angeles to sternly rebuke the conclusions of a post-election report that advised Republican elected officials to adopt a softer tone toward social issues. "We respectfully warn GOP Leadership that an abandonment of its principles will necessarily result

President Obama is pitching his new budget proposal as a fiscal peace offering to Republicans, but the details suggest everyone should expect more conflict. The fiscal 2014 plan he released Wednesday is a very slightly modified version of his previous budgets that reduces the deficit by raising taxes and trading defense cuts for more domestic spending. The real news is that his budget ratifies much of the spending increase of the first term and tries to lock it in. He wants the feds to spend $3.78 trillion next year ($11,944 per American), which would still be 22.2% of national

An IBD review of Obama´s budget finds that, among other things, it: • Boosts spending and deficits over the next two years. Obama´s own budget numbers show that he wants to hike spending over the next two years by $247 billion compared with the "baseline," which even after

For young Europeans, it must be difficult to imagine the routine deprivation that existed behind the Iron Curtain when Margaret Thatcher came to power. As a refugee in London during the Eighties, I had to smuggle necessities to my family in Poland: toothpaste, shampoo, washing powder and, hidden in the parcels, miniature editions of books that were banned there. Occasionally, these were found and confiscated – including, in 1984, a copy of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Mrs Thatcher’s role in changing all this cannot be overstated. In the immigration-reform legislation soon to be released by the Senate’s Gang of Eight, there will be a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants — but it will require proof of the border’s having been secured, and it will involve an arduous process that could easily take two decades for those eligible. The mark-up process for the Gang’s legislation will begin during the week of May 6. There will be no limits placed on how many amendments can be added, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. These are the broad outlines of the legislation: Modernizing the legal-immigration system.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources.
