Oakland leaders have
lost grip on violence

San Francisco Chronicle, by Chip Johnson

Just before Oakland city officials held a news conference Monday in East Oakland to assure everyone that they´ve got a handle on crime, I took a little walk around the neighborhood to ask local residents if they felt safe. Vincent Peters, 32, who was waiting for a bus with his wife and their 2-month old daughter, definitely does not. He said he´s preparing to move his family from the area because he values their safety. "You can hardly walk down the street without someone pushing a gun at you," Peters said. "These kids are scared, and that´s why they´re

Comments:
California officials boast the toughest anti-gun laws in the nation, local leaders claim crime is under control, yet people on the street say otherwise.

Can´t blame cultural issues, so blame the gun. Ban the guns, then pretend the ensuing crime wave does not exist. No wonder trust in government keeps hitting new lows.

These street thugs stick people up and shoot rival gang members. That´s breaking the law right there! Does anyone really think ANOTHER law about their weapon of choice will cause them to moderate their anti-social behavior? If so, why??

There are 2 motives behind removing firearms from ordinary citizens. First, it makes it much easier for the government to have their way with them. Second, it makes it more likely that helpless, terrorized citizens will approve the coming police state. The verbiage is just cover for the easily led.

It isn´t guns...it is the youngsters they have running around nowadays. Those "kids" (and I am talking about young adults too) have NO respect for life anymore. Even my friends who came from the older generations of Oakland were telling me that they are afraid of the "youngsters" now. It used to be that I could walk around anywhere in town and feel quite comfortable. I haven´t hung around there for a few years since most of my friends there have died or moved away, but the few times I´ve gone back to visit my friends, I have been very apprehensive. The youngsters look at me like "what the hell is a white girl doing here?" and they give me the suspicious eye like I am a cop or something. It was never like that 6-7 years ago. But I did feel the changing atmosphere. I guess I didn´t want to believe it was getting as bad as Los Angeles.

The underlying problem is the deteriorating social structure. Unless that is addressed, the crime wave will continue more or less until no one lives there anymore.

The crime stats do not tell the story on naything but the most violent crimes.

Policy in the state of CA is to releaase "non violent" offenders to save money. The average non violent ffender being released is, in facr, violence prone and has been involved in half dozen arrests, or so.

Crimes such as breaking and entering, smash and grabs are seldom reported due to the farcical response when one contacts the police department. Leave anything showing in a car and the wndow will be smashedd in and items taken. THe gutters are lttered with safety glass.

They no longer pretend to have any interest unless chalk is needed (to outline the body.)

Things are definitely bad in Oakland. But they could easily be worse.

For example, if Oakland went officially broke, the city would lay off police and firemen before they would lay off diversity coordinators and community organizers.

All you have to do is look at nearby Stockton to see the effects those changes would cause. Crime is rampant there and the drug cartels have all set up their CA headquarters there since there´s no real police presence. Life is tough when you screw up so badly that Wells Fargo repossesses your City Hall...

It´s easier to discredit the Oakland Police Department than it is to take a hard, sobering look at the crime that drives a police officer´s actions in the field. The department´s recent report on the race and ethnicity of the people who get pulled over or stopped by Oakland police officers showed that 62 percent of the stops involved African American people. Mays Landing — A former Boy Scout leader from Absecon convicted of sexually assaulting and photographing five boys during a 16-year period was sentenced Thursday to 85 years in prison. Brian Killion, 41, was found guilty in September on 34 counts including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and possession and manufacturing of child pornography. During the sentencing hearing, Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury Jr. merged several of the charges, adding that a serious sentence was needed given that Killion molested children nearly continuously for 16 years. “It is a certainty that

Why did the FBI take so long

As the corruption investigation of former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon went back underground Thursday, a nagging question hung over his embarrassed city: Couldn’t this have been known before he was elected mayor in November? According to an affidavit released this week, the FBI became aware of possible illegal activity of then-City Council member Cannon as early as August 2010. By the time Cannon was sworn as the city’s top elected leader, undercover agents posing as real estate developers had flown him and his wife to Las Vegas and paid him almost $30,000 in bribes, prosecutors say. Britain has become a net importer of petroleum products such as diesel for the first time since 1984 amid the closure of refineries and a sharp drop in crude production from the North Sea, the latest Government figures show.
