Chrysler CEO: Sales
of new Dart fall short

Associated Press, by Tom Krisher

DETROIT — Chrysler made the new Dodge Dart a little too European for American tastes. And the company´s CEO says that fact is holding back sales of Chrysler´s first innovative small car in years. The Dart, unveiled with much fanfare at last year´s Detroit auto show, is off to a slow start after going on sale in May. Only 25,000 were sold last year, which CEO Sergio Marchionne concedes is below his expectations. Chrysler, owned by Italy´s Fiat, had touted the sleek compact as the perfect blend of aggressive American styling and Italian technology. It was supposed

In comparison Honda sold over 300,000 Civics. For one, why name a brand new car after a stodgy (although reliable) model last seen during the Carter years?

I don´t get the renaming of an old, boring line either. That said, it´s Chrysler & I don´t buy from anyone getting Zippy´s taxpayer handouts.

There is no nostalgia because everyone thought the Darts back in the 60s and 70s were really ugly. It was the second car for the housewife who cringed when she had to drive it. Modern buyers would rather have Toyotas and Hondas. There is nothing special about the new Dart that would make anyone run out and buy one, from what I´ve seen of the new design.

My dad did tv spots for Dodge dealers in the 50´s and 60´s. The ´65 Dart cost $1599, 99 down and 99 a month. Sold like crazy. It was very basic and reliable. Very little nostalgic or sentimental value to them. Makes no sense to bring the line back. What next the Coronet, the Monaco. I´ll keep my Nissans.

Marchionne said the European transmission shifts more often and accelerates more slowly than Americans are used to. "It´s a great fuel mileage solution, but it´s got to meet consumer expectations, and were not quite there," Marchionne said.

It would be much easier to ask the Board of Directors in the administration to have DOT, DOE, EPA, of any of the czars issue a new policy that American cars be built with a transmission "that shifts like cars in Europe."

Rread a great review of this car the other day......the 1970(?) model lineup included the Dart Lite, and the ´Feather´ Duster. They got 36 mpg.
The New Dart? Gets..........36 MPG. Weighs almost 1,500 pounds more, costs almost $15K more and gets EQUAL mileage.

Wondermous!! Dat´s a superba desinga!

#5, my uncle bought a Dodge Coronet in October 1964... it was the 1965 model.
Had a 283 cu in engine, if I recall right.

We got that car from him later, circa 1983.
It ran great and we passed it on in 2003, looking sharp with new upholstery and paint.
We still had the original owner´s manual.
Sometimes people expressed interest when they saw it.

Another uncle in the 1960´s had a red Corvair he loved.
Boy did he hate Ralph Nader.

As Edith and Archie Bunker used to sing...
"Gee, our old LaSalle ran great...
Those were the days."

Those old Darts with the Slant Six engine were basically un-killable. The automotive equivalent of the cockroach, and just about as appealing.

My grandmother had a humongous 1972 Chrysler Newport that would have fit about three of those new Darts in the trunk.

Chef Vered Guttman braved the challenge of preparing a White House Passover seder in line with Michelle Obama´s healthy eating guidelines and lived to tell her story. "The traditional seder fare is hardly fresh or healthy," Guttman wrote in a post-dinner review about incorporating vegetable sides to "offset some of the Jewish carbs" like gefilte fish and matzo ball soup. And her hard work to keep it healthy paid off, as both the President and First Lady praised her quinoa-kale salad and even inquired after the recipe. A new poll shows former secretary of state Hillary Clinton´s (D) numbers hitting their lowest point in six years. DENVER | Colorado Democrats abandoned their own divisive abortion proposal Wednesday, axing the bill after one lawmaker expressed indecision and it became clear they might not have the votes to pass it in a chamber where every vote matters. It had been scheduled for a vote Wednesday evening in the Senate, where the party holds a slim one-seat majority. The move came after Sen. Climate change’s latest casualty appears to be fish — or more specifically, fish brains — as researchers say the carbon dioxide that’s being absorbed into the ocean is causing the scaly creatures to lose their survival instincts. In other words, the fish are losing their minds, The Daily Mail reported. The acid from atmospheric carbon dioxide seeps into sea waters, dissolves and ultimately lowers the pH balance, researchers said.
