| Like many people whose houses were badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy, my family and I have been living in a rented house since the storm. Unlike some whose houses were totalled, we could have repaired things and been home toasting our tootsies by our own fireplace by now. What happened? Two things: zoning (as in "Twilight Zone") and FEMA. (Snip) Before you could get a building permit, however, you had to be approved by the Zoning Authority. And Zoning—citing FEMA regulations—would force you to bring the house "up to code,"

Passive resistance is in order. We the people need to quit participating. We don´t abide by the silly rules. We don´t do as we are told. We resist passively. The goobernment can´t function if we the people don’t play by the goobernment´s rules.

My hot water heater recently decided that it no longer wanted to contain the water, but prefered to dump it all over my garage floor. Thinking that this wouldnt be that big a deal, and knowing that hot water heaters are relatively inexpensive, I sought out quotes. I was informed that the city requires a 75$ permit and that the city requires the installation of an additional resevoir tank. If I have a contractor install it, a full quarter of the cost will either go to the government or be for additional items required by the government. If I do it myself, fully 1/2 of the cost will be due to government fees and mandates. I plan to replace the unit myself and not tell the city what Im doing.

Sorry, pushed the enter key too fast. I wanted to replace an old wooden patio using the same footprint but better material. The city planing dept told me it would cost $130 for a permit. When I went back a month later with all of the design plans and contractor information the price for the permit went up to $780. If you can do it and not tell the city, county, or any one else: DO IT!

Lived in Denmark for 2 years where taxes on individuals & businesses were outrageous. As some here have noted - people will respond to ridiculous taxes with secret DIY projects or they begin a barter system and go underground. ( my wife can cut your family´s hair if you help us w some plumbing problems.).

years ago went to out county building department to get an OK to put up a pole barn that i intended to park my boat under. I was informed that i could not do that as my property was under an acre (.96) and a pole barn could only be built on agricultural property, but i could build a car port. When i asked what i would have to change on the plans the nice agent suggested that erasing "Pole Barn" and writing in "Car Port" should do it....

Hey, didn´t the moron-in-chief during his hug fest with Christie during a press conference indicate that all red tape would be removed in returning people to their homes? Wha´ happen?
Those of you who decide to DIY repairs...I don´t blame you, but when you sell your home, those madatory inspections, assessments and appraisals are gonna cost a plenty in bringing up to code.
Or, consider doing what they do in France, Spain, Italy and Mexico...offer a "bonus" to the inspectors who have to sign off on the permits.

Gun control has been driving the news this week, or at least the mail. In recent weeks readers have been encouraging me to dive into the morass. There is so much noise on this issue that I don´t know where to begin. (Snip) There are abundant gun laws on the books. If they were enforced and followed up we might be able to make a dent in gun violence. But laws don´t curb the lawless.

Today the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis released their 2012 personal income estimates. Personal income is an important economic measure of a state’s well-being. (Snip) Since 1950, Maine has increased taxes and spending dramatically with the introduction of the sales tax in 1951 and the income tax in 1969. New Hampshire, on the other hand, did not. Increasing taxes on the private sector has two consequences. First, higher taxes will mean less money in the pockets of individuals and businesses which will reduce their ability to invest for the future.

Electric cars are promoted as the chic harbinger of an environmentally benign future. Ads assure us of "zero emissions," and President Obama has promised a million on the road by 2015. With sales for 2012 coming in at about 50,000, that million-car figure is a pipe dream. (Snip) If a typical electric car is driven 50,000 miles over its lifetime, the huge initial emissions from its manufacture means the car will actually have put more carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere than a similar-size gasoline-powered car driven the same number of miles.

The word “FREEDOM” is among the list of banned vanity license plate slogans for Washington D.C., according to a government file obtained by a Freedom of Information Request filed by the transparency website GovernmentAttic.org. The lesson is that huge budget deficits and ultra-low interest rates — the basics of stimulus — have limits and can be self-defeating. To use a well-worn metaphor: Stimulus becomes a narcotic. People feel better for a while, but the effect wears off. The economy then needs a new fix. Too many fixes may spawn new problems (examples: excessive debt, asset “bubbles,” inflation). That’s already happened in Japan. It’s caught in a trap. On the one hand, it needs stimulus to grow. On the other, the debt from past stimulus measures threatens future growth.

The city´s designated emergency ambulance company, American Medical Response, has significantly increased its rates, prompting fresh complaints about large bills for trips to the hospital. Starting on Jan. 1, the company hiked its rates about 50 percent, charging $2,445 for a standard trip to the hospital. (Snip) AMR officials have said that it is forced to raise the rates it charges insurance companies to defray the costs of providing emergency service to those only covered by Medicare or Medicaid, as well as those who do not have insurance and cannot afford to pay.

The number of automatic weapons in New Hampshire increased dramatically after 2010, according to federal firearms records, although it remains unclear whether the growth is being driven by civilians, law enforcement or the military. The number of registered machine guns in New Hampshire spiked 80 percent between the end of 2010 and March 2012, according to the most current data available from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The Republican-led House Rules Committee late Monday approved a rule for a massive Hurricane Sandy relief package that shuts out most GOP proposals to pare back the size of the bill. The main bill provides $17 billion in relief, and an amendment made in order would add another $33.7 billion, for a total of $50.7 billion. Late last week, Republicans offered amendments that would trim the bill significantly, but few of those were made "in order" by the Rules Committee on Monday.

The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce.
