cuomo has absolutely no moral authority. This is the same guy who lost $56 billion when he was HUD secretary. Does any reasonable person believe a GOP HUD secretary who lost $56 billion would not be in jail, let alone be considered a frontrunner for President in 2016? This will be a good test case for Heller, which left the door open for "reasonable restrictions", and also stated that government could not outlaw an entire class of weapons in "common usage".

The majority of guns sold in this country have magazine capacities greater than seven. Will this pass constitutional muster? Is this "reasonable"?

The final act will be "All persons owning any firearm is hereby ordered, under penalty of law, to turn in said weapon at your local police or sheriff´s office. There is a ten day window of compliance, after which any holders of any firearms will be subject to a prison term of ten years and a fine of $100,000."

I think they are knee jerk liberal do nothing answers except for the reporting of crazy people so their guns can be confiscated. That´s fine as long as we get to decide who the therapist is, and they are not on the government payroll. It still wouldn´t have done anything to stop lanza who supposedly stole his guns from his overprotective mother. Now that newspapers have taken it upon themselves to encourage gun theft, the playing surface has certainly changed, and these laws will be of no effect. As far as getting a misdemeanor fine after using 10 rounds to protect my home, I´ll pay.

#1- The shooter committed suicide with a handgun. He shot all 20 children and 6 adults in the school with a Bushmaster, NOT a handgun. That has been reported over and over by the police and the medical examiner who did the autopsies since 3 days after the event. The children were all shot from 3 to 11 times and it took just a matter of minutes.

So this is their new law. Notice the change of events? Therapist reports to mental health director who reports to state. In the real world,if someone makes a credible threat to use a gun illegally, most folks would simply call 911. But no, the ´rights´ of the mentally ill are so sacrosanct that it takes 3 layers of bureaucrats before they call 911. This isn´t strong enough.

Incredible--they´ve banned posession of the 1911. Come to think of it, my 1963-vintage Winchester Model 77 .22 rifle is now set to be illegal in NY--it´s a squirrel gun, for Pete´s sake. In fact, I expect there are very, very few current semi-autos of any stripe with a standard capacity of seven or less. Does a revolver cylinder count as a "magazine"--there are several 8- or 9-shot .22 revolvers out there. What kind of Republican says this lunacy "protects the Second Amendment"?

#18 No, the 1911 (at least in its most common configuration) was spared since it has a 7-round magazine. My original thought was that this seemingly arbitrary number was chosen in part to placate Kimber, who makes 1911s and is headquartered in Yonkers.

I am sure that no New York residents are going to get rid of their 8+ round magazines. How does Cuomo expect to enforce this, by going house to house?

Did this bill actually become law in NY, or is it a bill that just passed the State Senate, the article did not make that fact clear?
