| The comments so far on my most recent piece (“Despair Inside the Beltway”), which ran here yesterday, have usually fit a familiar pattern: tear down the writer who voted for Mr. Obama even though he has now seen the error of his ways and is working for change. (Snip)I should have mentioned how I voted in the last election. For the first time in a long life, I voted almost exclusively for Republicans, including Mitt Romney for President. He was clearly the best qualified and most honorable candidate for the top position.
|
Comments: Yesterday´s Must Read "Despair Inside the Beltway" got more than 90 comments on the thread, and apparently generated a lot of criticism for Trebach at his own site. This is his rejoinder.

Mr. Trebach, while I appreciate your sudden enlightenment and your honesty, I cannot for the life of me figure out why you are now concerned with the opinions of the conservative masses when you obviously were NOT in 2008. May I suggest that you return to your pre-2012 ways and not give a damn what other people think and say? That you´ve grown up and see the light is enough for me.

"In my humble opinion, little progress toward change is made by tearing down those on your side...."
He is absolutely correct. Save your vitriol for those who don´t vote with you. Tearing apart those who do vote Republican is certainly not going to bring in more votes for the next election.

I was so glad to see Mr. Trebach´s article yesterday because it meant liberal folks were "seeing the light" of their false prophet. The critics seemed like the ones who were so hard on Romney and that was, indeed, their right. As we see more and more of these enlightened ones, are we going to dismiss them outright because they have not always been in the trenches with us? Fellow Americans, we can´t afford to!

Dear Mr. Trebach,
Welcome to the New Revolution. I hope you are rested and ready for the fight. It will be long and hard. I hope you learn not to be so thin-skinned as you have shown in this article.
Conservatives get beaten about the head and shoulders every day for their beliefs. We are told we are stupid, bigotted and mean-spirited. You will be told that and more, too.
As I said, welcome to the revolution we are glad to have another voice who can write!

The most vile result of the Democrat’s despicable habit and tactic of ad hominem attacks on, not only candidates, but the families of candidates, is that most good men and women will eschew public office for the sake of their families, knowing how they would be savaged by hordes of dishonorable Democrat operatives and filthy media. The Left has way of debasing any culture or society it oozes into.

I criticized the author on his last piece but I welcome him to the fight. I keep in mind, however, as I would anyone, that he is a person that has very poor judgement. I cannot imagine anyone engaged in political thought could come to the conclusion that Obama had the qualities and experience for the presidency. Therefore, he is welcomed to the fight, but cannot be trusted due to his apparent inability to apply the most basic logical thought.
Liberalism is a disease. Few can ever shake off the infection.

The main problem with Prof. Trebach´s earlier article is that every single reason he gives in it was known to the 46% who voted against this abomination in 2008. A highly educated, intelligent and politically conscious individual should have known better back then. Otherwise there something seriously wrong. But as a poster here says "Come on in Prof the water is fine"

Yesterday Rush Limbaugh talked about how Republicans and conservatives don´t defend their own. They let people like Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann swing in the wind. Therefore we lose one good leader after another. The left knows who is threatening to them and that´s who they go after.
The reactions to this man are in a similar vein. Yes, he was a lib in denial, but now that he sees his errors he needs to be welcomed and supported. God knows he´s probably getting huge grief from his colleagues and acquaintances. Do you know who Whittaker Chambers was? He was a Communist spy in the 1930s who did a lot of damage, but when he repented he became a huge asset to the right as he informed the public of what the Communist Party was up to, and dissected the wrongness of that whole ideology. He became a friend of William F. Buckley. Suppose the conservatives at that time had rejected him? What a loss that would have been.

Mr. Trebach,
The civil rights movement was taken over by extremists after Martin Luther King was killed. He is turning over in his grave as he watches what his movement has become and the devistation it has caused to the black family.
You can continue to hope for True equality and compassion for all people, but in my experience that ship has long sailed. While white people have raised their children that everyone is equal, black children have been raised that everything is "whitey´s" fault. It will take generations to change that view. I worked in the inner city for many years and speak from first hand experience. Unfortunately, your naïveté still exists if you believe otherwise.
As for remembering the good that Obama has done, he hasn´t done anything good. He is destroying our country.
If you are truly joining the fight, you need to realize that. Also, you need to focus on our corrupt media. Good luck.

There have been other conversions we have seen at this site. Ramona (The Pest) comes to mind. Also, think of the writings we enjoyed from Robin of Berkeley. We should welcome the change, not admonish it.
Would you also condemn the former atheist who now sees the light?

Dear Dr. Trebach:
I was one of those commenters yesterday that you may not have cared for, but a single sentence in this column causes me some regret for my comments, the fact that you voted for Mr. Romney. I confess that I am not familiar with your work, but I hope that in addition to your vote you utilized your words to support Mr. Romney.
Regarding your dissappointment with the direction of the Civil Rights Movement, this no great surprise, as its course was predicted by Booker T. Washington at Tuskeegee. The only thing that I can add to his admonition is that the degeneration ws accelerated via Lyndon B. Johnson´s Great Society Initiative.
Finally, I fervently pray that you realize that you will be hounded and despised by those you once considered friends. They will view your words as an assault upon their beliefs. Past activities that may have been called youthful indescretions, will be labelled as heinous behavior because you are now viewed as a conservative. There is a reason so many of us eschew public office.
I hope you are up for the fight.
Kindest regards.

Furthermore, I have noticed that those converts who find a welcoming reception become more conservative over time. Once they lose their knee-jerk horror about various conservative positions they can look anew at what they believe. As they move along in their thinking they see more clearly what harm their previous allegiance to the left has done. Read David Horowitz if you want to see repentance, but I don´t think he was as deeply repentant at first as he is now.

Stop beating up on ex-liberal n00bies!
Christian conservatives: think of the Good Shepherd. He didn´t take sly kicks at His lost lamb and call it a stinky, mentally pathetic furball. He put the lamb on His shoulders and said, Today there is rejoicing in heaven.
Non-Christian conservatives: just think. If you knew you would be demeaned for changing your opinion in the face of overwhelming evidence, wouldn´t it give you yet another reason to ignore overwhelming evidence?
Mr. Trebach: You have my respect and my right hand in fellowship. God bless you. Good to have you aboard.

The problem, Mr. Trebach is that you seem to have concluded you madea mistake but you did not take full responsibility for the calamiy that has befallen our Nation. It´s not enough to just say "Opps. I made a mistake." You have to own the fact that you are complicit in the desruction of this Nation. And , as other commenters have said hee, you are not part of the "uninformed voter" class. You had all the information available and access to all resources needed to know that obama had (and still has) NO qualifications whatsoever to assume the office he is usurping. Not to mention the very seious issue of his unproven eligibility, which I am sure you originally dismissed out of hand wihtou a second thought (and probabaly still do).
Your awakening is too little too late I am afraid. The die is cast and the damage that obama has inflicted on our once Great Nation may NEVER be undone and if it is it will take CENTURIES to recover. And remember: obama is nowhere near being done. We shoudl all brace ourselves for a shocking dose of reality which is sure to be cataclismic. So, Prof. Trebach... you do have ample opportunity to redeem yourself by fighting on our side... but you better get to work soon and keep at it for a very long time.

I am a tail-ender baby boomer (1956). I remember my generation protesting the govt over Viet Nam (it was 2 words then)and civil rights. They called Johnson and Nixon dictators and murderers. Here we are 40 some odd years later with the 60´s protesters in charge. The irony is that they are more totalitarian than the govt they protested against.

Spending more money that you have is irresponsible. Calling people names is juvenile. Having two sets of laws (one for Main Street and one for Washington) is hypocritical.

Our failure to stand by our own who are attacked ( Sarah Palin ) and our failure to accept converts from the other side are the source of many conservative losses. I know many good hearted people who are taken in by Obama´s demagoguery. I have tried to bring them around with little success. We should be wary of phony converts to be sure but we should not reject the possibility altogether. Let what is past be past. This is what the left refuses to do in digging for dirt on conservative leaders. They can disqualify anybody by nitpicking some past event in their lives while excusing anything in their own leaders. Remember Reagan was a democrat - before he became the greatest Republican president of our time.

My long-held beef is with what has become of most of our nation’s corrupt, role-model-Joseph Goebbels-inspired media. To quote myself:

There is nothing to be ashamed of Judy. WE are all free individuals with our own opinions. You should only be ashamed of lapses and failures that YOU are responsible for.
I am simply FURIOUS at the people responsible for this disaster in our White House. We can´t blame obama: he is a corrupt, thoroughly unqualified, utter FRAUD intent on destroying everythign that is great and glorious about this Nation. So everything that he is doing is everything one would expect an ENEMY of America to do to bring about our destruction. He is acting according to his nature. The ones who deserve the blame are those who gave obama the power to do inflict his destruction upon all of us. And that includes the good Professor and pretty much the ENTIRE Republican establishment... particualrly the Congressmen and Senators who CONTINUE to fail their Oath to protect and defend our Constitution.
Step 1: Force obama to conclusively prove he is eligible to occupy the White House.
Step 2: If he is not eligible, try him as a FRAUD and TRAITOR and administer the proper sentence.
Step 3: Nullify EVERY "Law" that he ever signed while usurping the office of POTUS.

Thanks # 18 Welcome in Mr. Trebach. Please understand that people in this country who knew what Obama was from the get-go are pretty sick, angry, enraged - you name it - about what has happened to our country. We fought and fought and fought to get the man out of office and either the delusions of the left or the ignorance of the no-info-voter or possibly the out and out cheating of the Democrats got him back in office. We´re pretty steamed and sometimes pretty discouraged after this last election. Please continue to speak out loud and clear about what you have come to see sir. It does surprise me though that folks as erudite as you seem to be, could be so easily fooled by a mystery man who had no real political track record, very shady supporters (Tony Rezkpo, Bill Ayers, Ted Kennedy etc) and a very sketchy academic history, could possibly be qualified to be president of the United States!

I think for people like me and most of those on this website we have seen nothing from Obama that was any different from what we expected before he took office in 2009. That´s probably because we keep up with information by doing things like visiting Lucianne.com often and not relying entirely on the MSM and NPR for our information. Mr. Trebach was apparently surprised at what Obama has done his four years as President. We were not. It was exactly what we expected.
Congratulations to Mr. Trebach that he finally caught on. But it took a four year presidency for him to do learn from his mistake. And that mistake has done a lot of damage that is probably not repairable. I hope Mr. Trebach will in the future find a way to properly inform himself to understand what a leader will do before he gives him the job and has to learn from his mistake once again.
Meanwhile we have to live with the mess that has been caused by the underinformed Trebach and others like him.

In yesterday´s article, I lost Mr. Trebach when he employed the usual "above it all" slap against Bush:
There is plenty of blame to pass around for this condition and it should be shared by Democrats and Republicans, by George Bush and by Barack Obama,
Had he also blamed Clinton and Roosevelt, I might have taken him more seriously.\sarc
I was not a fool to support George W. Bush. He was a good POTUS. His policies were effective and he loved and supported this country, its citizens and its constitution. Had it not been for the venomous liberals who just plain hated him and the air he breathed - of which I can safely assume Mr. Tebach was one - President Bush´s tenure would have been much more effective. I miss GW, and Dick Cheney right now.
Mr. Trebach was a fool for failing to see through Obama. Obama´s failures were clear as day to me and I am not the least bit surprised by the circumstances we are in. And, they are not George Bush´s fault.
If Mr. Trebach wants to preach, or lecture as the case may be, he should direct his repentant thoughts to Mother Jones, HuffPo, or perhaps The Nation. Those are the people who still need the kind of advice he is offering.
Welcome to the fold, Mr. Trebach. Now take your place at back of the class. You still have some things to learn.

The good professor still does not get it.
From the article yesterday, after giving a rundown of Obama´s empty resume: "he [Obama] was elected president in 2008 and, as I said, I voted for him. Like many millions of citizens, I managed to overcome my disgust at his association with his bigoted, racist, anti-Semitic pastor, Jeremiah Wright."
Why wouold an otherwise intelligent man make an effort to "overcome" your "disgust"? Of course, we all know the answer: to elect the "first black president." You voted color, and color alone. Your vote was character blind. And what level of vileness evidenced by Obama´s associations could have caused you to abandon this wilfull blindness?
Actions have consequences. In your case, the consequences of your folly is being visited upon 300 million Americans. You don´t get to just do a John Belushi shrug, mutter "sorry," and go on your merry way, everything forgiven. You, personally, have helped contribute to the destruction of America by helping to elect the instrument of that destruction, and the rest of us are still angry about it. No, not angry, spitting furious.
YOU, Professor, are expected to spend the rest of your life making up for it. This has been a good start. Keep it up. You have about 40 years left on your sentence.

Of the many excellent posts re this professor’s tripe, reply 21 by Pros7767 on yesterday’s thread is the only one that goes to one of my core problems…this guy has shaped if not poisoned young minds for at least 2 generations at a prestigious university. That is my despair, along with the fact that once again, the thinkers in our party are elevating such a person by giving him space in a major conservative publication, and then two days running as a must read on this site. I’m Black, a life-long Republican, and someone who has worked in the party from the precinct to the White House, so I’ve seen so-called converts moved to the head of the line and celebrated as opposed to those who have labored in the vineyard. I can think of dozens of LDotters who have more to say and can say it better than this guy! Give me more doses of Alicia Colon, or Hazymac, or Veritas, or many many other thoughtful posters I challenge and who challenge me every day. Mr. Trebach, we just had the opportunity to do that and enough Americans are still so misguided that BO got reelected. Most of your litany against BO was known BEFORE his first election.
So Mr. Trebach, welcome to enlightenment (although your previous progressive colleagues will think you have become ignorant). I have been worried about our Country from well before BO was elected in 2008. But why did you have to be hit by BO´s bus before you saw the light? Having been in the progressive miasma do you have any ideas HOW to spread that enlightenment to progressives still lost in the wilderness and seemingly immune to rational thought? For THAT is the problem we face and there will be NO "groundswell of popular demand" until it is resolved.

Two names may remind LDotters about why we are careful of longtime liberals who profess to become conservatives. Andrew Sullivan and Charles Johnson (of Little Green Footballs). We welcomed both men to our side, and both of them eventually reverted to form. Some conversions are real, but some are not.
That´s not to say that we should shun new converts until they have proven themselves. But a lifetime of thought patterns is hard to break. And treating Dr. Trebach with a degree of caution is probably warranted.

My reply was posted early in the AM, and not partictularly snarky, but not exactly welcoming either. I have a life long suspicion of liberals or progressives or whatever it is you (used) to call yourself. I am an early baby boomer, and was appalled at the behaviour of my age cohorts in the sixties, incredulous that anyone could be so DUMB, and haven´t changed my mind in the least. One of my closest friends was and is an old hippie, and quite frankly she is the stupidest smart person I know. Knee jerk reaction to anything or anyone conservative or Christian. Having been mocked and criticized most of my adult life for being both Christian, and conservative, you´ll understand I don´t exactly believe you at first read. And from the over-the-top media coverage of conservatism and Christianity I developed a healthy skepticism of all pronouncements and writings of all things liberal.
I live in a southern state, and my nephew is quite upset about how southerners are protrayed as HoneyBooBoos, and hoarders, and preppers, not to mention red-necked yahoos who marry their sisters. I told him not to let it bother him, it keeps the liberal riff-raff out.

I am happy to see a liberal on the mend. But we need to take a page out of the left´s book and use it against them: bash our way to doominance in the smallest and biggest of things. For example---do any of you challenege CNN´s dominance at offices and airports everywhere? Do it. Insist on FOX or CSPAN so we get both sides of an argument. Woddforest National Bank is an example of a bank who chooses thru corporate policy to have CNN indoctinate its poor clients who are only there to do banking. Well, write to the CEOs and demand fairness, that watchword of the left. Do it everywhere, get in their face and never stop and never tire---that is how the left has won...it has never stopped and it has fought over the smallest things to declare victory and move on to bigger things. Start, make a difference, write call and bombard and totally harass wherever and whenever you can leftist outlets or businesses who allow themselves to be used by the left. I say let´s start with knocking CNN down, then on to other things.

I didn´t read nor comment on yesterday´s article. If this person is truly repentant and will use their influence to attempt to educate the Ignorant Masses then, by all means, go for it. However, I don´t feel that anyone who claims to have an iota of real intelligence (as opposed to the State Controlled Media infused mantras) could have actually thought that Obama was qualified in any way, shape, or form to be our country´s President in 2008 - ESPECIALLY after knowing what he was, is, and what he was planning to do with the country. It doesn´t take a degreed person to see that Obama is the most Anti-American person to run for the office of president - EVER.
Long story short, I agree with poster #49.

Dear Mr. Trebach, you seem to think you deserve a "pat on the back" for your new-found revelation and understanding, which shows you have a lot of "growing-up" to do. It seems you want accolades from the conservative "group" which also shows you do not really comprehend us at all. I hope when you come to understand how individual responsibility which influences your "actions" and not just your "words" is an indicator of your maturity then you can write your book. Will it be about you or 0bama?

David Horowitz is a passionate reformed liberal and I welcome any such person to my side of the line - we need all the sincere help we can get, especially those with a forum.
To those who still want to gripe about the author´s previous voting record - recognize what it took for him to admit he was wrong and change his mind. Not an easy process I think.

Amen to #44.
There ought to be a probationary period for any convert to the cause. Until there´s some evidence of persistence in his conversion, Trebach needs to be watched for signs that he might be a Tessio, instead.
Far too many ´conversions´ prove to be safaris, instead -- temporary adventures into alien territory, not relocations of heart.
And an intellectual with any sense of integrity would admit that a conversion on this scale reveals fundamental lapses in common sense and reasoning that should make one pause rather than present oneself for potential leadership. Trebach´s welcome to take a position in the back of the class with us ten, twenty, and thirty-year converts. Someone whose world view was distorted by decades of toxic reasoning should be ready for it to take at least a few years to recover sufficiently to be a leader again.

My Dear Professor Trebach:
I respond publicly because you have replied to our comments publicly. In my opinion, you have mixed two things together. You think we are annoyed with you as you may be now, when (speaking just for myself) I am annoyed with what YOU WERE -- not what you are. A Man, much greater than I, once said " You are forgiven, go and sin no more". Sadly, I don´t have that huge power & depth of immediate forgiveness. You and your kind started the fire you now would like to help put out. We welcome your aid, but remember that we only need it because of the actions of you & your former friends in the first place! Can you be forgiven? Of course! And you can be welcomed too! Just start now and work to compensate for your past. Become like St. Paul. After his Damascus experience he turned on a dime. You seem young enough in your photo to help make a change. Do it. Your ENTIRE life will be judged, and not by me. I will welcome anyone who comes into the Alamo and wants to fight next to me. But don´t expect all love & kisses until you prove yourself. Cordially,

One-by-one, the liberals wake up to reality. We have to wonder how it must have felt to the intelligent people who had supported Herr Hitler though his rise to wake up one morning to watch Jews being whipped in the street and shoved onto cattle cars and then to see their cities bombed to oblivion. That day did they suddenly have an epiphany? One has to wonder about all the other rising atrocities against German society Hitler and his boys ran before that day. Well, it’s exactly the same now. Yes, I am glad you finally woke up to reality. But, what was wrong that you remained so gullible in 2008 or even earlier to this charlatan’s lies and blatant admissions of hatred for our country and outright racist views against white people! Yeah, now that we are obviously spinning into disaster, you come out and state the obvious. Well, pal, in my book, you are way, way too late. I’m delighted your in the same sinking boat as the rest of us- but the tragedy for my country I love so much is dreadful- thanks to people just like you!

Don’t be so hard on Mr. Trebach, the converted make for wonderful spokesmen. Besides, he is in good company. Martin Niemöller, a Lutheran pastor in Germany, was interned in Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps from 1938 to 1945. After his former cell-mate Leo Stein was released from Sachsenhausen to go to America, he wrote an article about Niemöller for The National Jewish Monthly in 1941.[2] Stein reports that having asked Niemöller why he ever supported the Nazi Party, Niemöller replied: I find myself wondering about that too. I wonder about it as much as I regret it. Still, it is true that Hitler betrayed me. I had an audience with him, as a representative of the Protestant Church, shortly before he became Chancellor in 1932. Hitler promised me on his word of honor to protect the Church, and not to issue any anti-Church laws. He also agreed not to allow pogroms against the Jews, assuring me as follows: "There will be restrictions against the Jews, but there will be no ghettos, no pogroms, in Germany." I really believed, given the widespread anti-Semitism in Germany at that time, that Jews should avoid aspiring to Government positions or seats in the Reichstag. There were many Jews, especially among the Zionists, who took a similar stand. Hitler´s assurance satisfied me at the time. On the other hand, I hated the growing atheistic movement, which was fostered and promoted by the Social Democrats and the Communists. Their hostility toward the Church made me pin my hopes on Hitler for a while. I am paying for that mistake now; and not me alone, but thousands of other persons like me. (Wikipedia)

This election was stolen. As Neil Boortz said on Hannity, the Dems have found a way to win, and they will NEVER loose another election. We need to be standing and shouting and fighting over the election. 1994 and 2010 showed them they must steal the elections---and they will from now on. We must stand and fight over the election results.

He is hedging his bets that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Someday Obama will be soundly, roundly and justifiably vilified. Want to read something ironic? Reread the Declaration of Independence. But read on down where the grievances are listed. Many of those grievances against King George listed by the Founders are the same complaints we write about Obama today.
What´s that saying about when we don´t learn from the past we are bound to repeat it? It looks as though we have come full circle since the founding.

Mr. Trebach, in his foreward to, ‘THE BETRAYAL OF THE DREAM Racial Absurdities in the Obama Era”, describes himself and his fellow civil rights activists during the 1950s and 1960s as, “We naïve idealists…”. Apparently, that description carried over to the 2008 Presidential election when he voted for Barack Obama. Mr. Trebach can backtrack all he wants; can write numerous articles about his dismay; can speechify about his misgivings – but none of that matters now. The sordid fact remains that Mr. Trebach helped to elect Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States in 2008. If he and his other ‘naïve idealists’ had done some research and had voted with their brains instead of with their bleeding hearts, we would not now be in this nightmarish position. Sorry, Mr. Trebach- no present mea culpas can make up for the damage that you have already done.

In my humble opinion, little progress toward change is made by tearing down those on your side Feminine protection is something you no doubt need to purchase and use to get over your sad yeast infection. Your original article was pure PhD firm-grasp-of-the-obvious to most of us knuckle draggers who figured out Obama back in October of 2007 before the Dem primaries got rolling. Yeah, real enlightening stuff there doc. Call Dr Krauthammer, Bill, and the rest of the Lincoln chalice drinkers at the Weekly Standard. They drove their ships aground just like you did and they ignored the consequences of their decisions, even trying to destroy anyone who spoke the truth about Obama BEFORE November, 2008, then having Howard Kurtz-like epiphanies WAY after the election because after all, wouldn´t want to waste all that brilliance, right? I rarely read editorials by the New York Times anymore, not because they’re liberal (Michael Kinsley is liberal and worth reading) but because they’re banal. I was reminded of this when I actually did read a recent Times editorial, in this case one titled “The Republicans’ Benghazi Obsession.” The editorial is worth referencing only to make a broader point, which is the dangers that can happen to journalists when they begin to view themselves as on a team rather than as individuals dedicated to unearthing truth (the role of reporters) or deepening the public’s understanding of issues

In the real world, Texas remains very much a part of the United States. But in the world of fiction, several authors have released books in the past year depicting the Lone Star State as a breakaway republic rebelling against shenanigans in Washington. It´s the start of a literary subgenre: secessionist fantasy. "The Secession of Texas" by Darrell Maloney of San Antonio envisions an independent Texas with its own border patrol, guarding against people trying to sneak into the country illegally—from Oklahoma. "Lone Star Daybreak" by Erik L. Larson of Houston tells the story of recruits

Though she was 21, Knight became easily confused by her surroundings. Still, no one thought twice about her visiting family on that day in August 2002. Her mother believed that she suffered a mental disability. Even knowing that, what could go wrong? After all, the cousin lived near Lorain Avenue. Huckabee asked Smith if she was somewhat comforted by the congressional hearings about the attacks last week. "Absolutely not," she said. "I am still waiting to answers to just about everything."

The rage over the burial of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s remains was a fascinating study in how we regard the bodies that housed the spirits and souls of those who’ve departed. Sometimes we spread their ashes over sites of nostalgic remembrance, as if to posthumously maintain a visceral connection. Sometimes we adorn their graves with flowers, perhaps adding an inscription on their tombstones to convey a parting thought. On one such heart-shaped stone it was recently chiseled, “Absent from the body, present with the Lord.” But cemeteries can stir darker emotions, too, such as vows to “dance on your grave.”

On March 22, 2012, IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman testified under oath before the House Oversight Committee, which was inquiring as to whether the agency was targeting tea-party groups and other conservative organizations filing for tax-exempt status. He firmly and repeatedly denied that any such thing was happening. “There’s absolutely no targeting,” he said. A little over a year later, the IRS confirmed that it was in fact improperly targeting not only tea-party groups but also Jewish religious nonprofits and organizations inspired by Glenn Beck’s 9/12 Project. Lori Lerner, the IRS official in charge of tax-exempt organizations,

It’s the sort of overblown abuse of power we like to laugh at in other countries, confident it could never happen here. A multi-billionaire, dissatisfied with being just a business tycoon, starts a media division, brands it with his name and starts to gobble up competition and talent. Then he decides to run for office, knowing his opposition will do the good-citizen thing and stay within the established public-finance law, considered a national model of good government. He plays by his own rules, changing parties not because his politics have changed but because otherwise

The Internal Revenue Service´s scrutiny of conservative groups went beyond those with "tea party" or "patriot" in their names—as the agency admitted Friday—to also include ones worried about government spending, debt or taxes, and even ones that lobbied to "make America a better place to live," according to new details of a government probe. The investigation also revealed that a high-ranking IRS official knew as early as mid-2011 that conservative groups were being inappropriately targeted—nearly a year before then-IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman told a congressional committee the agency wasn´t targeting conservative groups.

This is beyond Orwellian, entering a dystopian fantasy dreamed up by H.P. Lovecraft and featuring some Cthulian nightmare. Deep within the diseased bowels of the 800 page immigration reform bill is a profound threat to privacy in the US; an authorization for the Department of Homeland Security to create a bio-metric data base of every adult male in the US. Does this info come to us via some hysterical, far right wing website? Actually, it’s the tech site Wired that is sounding the alarm: The immigration reform measure the Senate began debating yesterday would create a national

The dam really is breaking on Benghazi with even reliable Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein offering criticism of the administration on Meet the Press Sunday. Will she go under the bus too in the next Jay Carney press briefing, as have the State Department and the CIA? Hard to say, but here’s what the California senator said: “I think this is a cautious administration,” Feinstein told host David Gregory. ”But this is one instance where, you know, it was what it was. And you saw it.

Senator John McCain, who famously defended his then presidential opponent Barack Obama against an islamaphobic supporter during a 2008 campaign rally, defended President Obama once again on ABC’s This Week Sunday, cautioning his Republicans colleagues to cool it with talk of impeaching the President over the Benghazi attacks and its aftermath. In response to Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) invoking the “I word,” McCain called for caution: “With all due respect, I think this is a serious issue,” McCain told guest host Martha Raddatz. “I will even give the president the benefit of the doubt

BBC has apologized for its coverage of the Benghazi murders; ABC has unraveled the mendacious tale of the talking points ´ genesis and the Congressional hearings this week have dramatically established the administration´s elaborate lies about how our ambassador and his brave defenders were murdered and its failure to protect them. Maybe now the press will feel it´s okay to get off their duffs and report how a thoroughly incompetent administration, motivated solely by self-interest, left our ambassador and others to be murdered and then lied about it with consequences to us all.

Call it “Oval Office Couch Syndrome.” By the second term “inside the bubble,” presidents have completely lost touch with reality: Aides and confidants conspire to keep the chief executive insulated from the real world — the bad news, the worse press coverage. They think it’s their job, and lounging on the Oval Office couches, they nod along with the president’s every musing. But this presidency has taken OOCS to new heights — Mr. Obama has only a few trusted aides, and occasional leaks from the West Wing show a paranoid president suspicious of nearly everyone around him.

Black students are suspended more than three times as often as their white classmates, twice as often as their Latino classmates and more than 10 times as often as their Asian classmates in middle and high schools nationwide, a new study shows. The average American secondary student has an 11% chance of being suspended in a single school year, according to the study from the University of California Los Angeles Civil Rights project. However, if that student is black, the odds of suspension jump to 24%.

At various points over the past two years, Internal Revenue Service officials singled out for scrutiny not only groups with “tea party” or “patriot” in their name but also nonprofit groups that criticized the government and sought to educate Americans about the U.S. Constitution, according to documents in an audit conducted by the agency’s inspector general. The documents, obtained by The Washington Post from a congressional aide with knowledge of the findings, show that the IRS field office in charge of evaluating applications for tax-exempt status decided to focus on groups making statements that “criticize

"Everybody knows that she´s one of the most experienced candidates we´ve ever had running for president. She practically doesn´t have to say it." So said Time magazine´s Joe Klein about Hillary Clinton on Sunday´s syndicated Chris Matthews Show (video follows with transcript and commentary): JOE KLEIN: But also, they made a decision at that point that a lot of the people in Hillaryland really regret. They went with experience rather than the notion of change. “Hey, he isn´t the only change candidate - I´m a woman.” And she never did that. This time, everybody knows that she´s

Politics! Politics! They’re playing politics in Washington! Pretending to be modern Paul Reveres, Democrats and their media handmaidens are doing their damnedest to diminish the Benghazi revelations with the cheapest trick in town. While there is always pungent hypocrisy when one gang of politicians accuses another gang of playing politics, the current phony outrage from the Obama Protection Society is exceptionally putrid. After all, the whole saga of Benghazi — before, during and after the terror attack — reflects nothing so much as the ultimate expression of Barack Obama’s politics.

Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, is on the list of potential Democratic presidential candidates compiled by the extraordinarily astute Prez16.com . As a cabinet secretary (and as a potential, if dark horse, presidential nominee) Madame Secretary should refrain from slurring the Drudge Report, as recently she did, a slur Drudge, confidently, featured. Drudge is no fan of Napolitano. He regularly tweaks her as “Big Sis” (presumably an allusion to George Orwell’s “Big Brother”). Drudge is one of the most powerful — and widely respected — forces in the news business today.

An inspector general’s report due for release this week says senior Internal Revenue Service officials knew that agents were targeting conservative groups for special scrutiny as early as 2011, nine months before the IRS commissioner assured Congress the targeting was not happening. The report is certain to raise questions about the timing of the IRS’s disclosure of the targeting on Friday, how high up were the officials who knew about the practice, and whether anyone outside the agency was aware of it. Details of the inspector general’s audit, obtained by The Washington Post from a congressional aide

It would be too easy to make fun of the good Christian voters of South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District who saw fit to return their disgraced former Gov. Mark Sanford to the office he once held. I won’t do it. Well, maybe just a little. Sanford, whose political rise was fueled by his conservative principles and focus on family values, did not stay true to his wife. But in the end, the voters in South Carolina’s 1st stayed true to him.(Snip)“Obviously, there´s a vulnerability to me now that people respond to," Sanford told

This love is terrifying. Thousands of American teen girls are crushing on Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19 — and leading a social-media movement to exonerate him. The swooning teens will not accept allegations that the college kid — whom they refer to by his nickname, “Jahar” — and his brother, Tamerlan, 26, killed three and maimed hundreds by setting off bombs at the April 15 race. While some scrawl the hashtag “#FreeJahar” on their hands with markers, an 18-year-old in Topeka, Kan., is going to the extreme — she wants Dzhokhar’s words inked on her arm forever.

The GOP majority in the House is reaching for new heights of political absurdity this week with its 37th vote to kill all or part of the Affordable Care Act. Let us briefly turn to political reality. There is absolutely zero chance that ObamaCare will be repealed while Democrats control the Senate and President Obama is in the White House. Reality also compels some mention of the fact that the GOP has never held a vote on any alternative plan for dealing with the nation’s out-of-control healthcare spending. But reality is a nuisance to Congressional Republicans
