HMRC: taxman increasingly
´snooping´ on taxpayers

Telegraph [UK], by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 1/14/2013 5:51:09 AM

Figures show Her Majesty´s Revenue and Customs officials made almost 14,400 authorised views of "communications data" on taxpayers during tax evasion investigations. This compares to more than 11,500 such views in 2010, which equates to a rise of almost 25 percent, according to statistics released under Freedom of Information laws. Using the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, HMRC can access details on what websites are viewed by taxpayers, where a mobile phone call was made or received and the date and time of emails, texts and phone calls. From October 2011 to the end of September last year

Comments:
Another bit of legislation Labour imposed on the British which has not yet curtailed--probably because of the maelstrom caused by other, more urgent barriers to a free society, like full-on immigration.

If such invasions of privacy are not already occurring in the U.S., there is no doubt in my mind that it will be here soon--very soon--with "affordable" health care regs the excuse.

Be warned.

P.S. Ignore the "Her Majesty" bit. It´s always been called that, as with the HMS denoting a Royal Navy ship. More traditional than anything else--everybody knows it doesn´t have a literal meaning.

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

Disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner, whose career was destroyed after embarrassing sexts he sent to young women leaked online, is rumored to be planning a bid to run as New York mayor this year, according to reports today. Numerous sources claim Weiner, the Brooklyn congressman forced to step-down amid the embarrassing scandal in 2011, is about to make his entry into the race and put himself in contention for the Democratic Party primary. The New York Post today claims that Weiner is laying the foundations for a comeback after agreeing to a lengthy interview in the New York Times with

The most successful politicians write their own obituaries. I have read a number of Baroness Thatcher´s today and wondered whether the writers would be surprised if they were told she would probably agree with most of what was written, even in the Left-of-centre outlets. This is because successful politicians so dominate the debate on the issues they care about--which were many, in Thatcher´s case--that they determine the course of the argument including the response from opponents. They do this by defining themselves in the public imagination by what they are against rather than what they are for, and leaving only

North Korea´s army was deeply split over whether to accept the command of Kim Jong-un, a former officer has revealed, giving a possible clue to the tensions lying behind the young leader´s calls to war. First Lieutenant Kim, 42, said he had been forced to flee North Korea after he murdered a rival officer as the factions within his army unit battled for control. "I killed a three-star company commander, the same rank as me," he said. "He was the head of the faction supporting Kim Jong-un. There were two fights. In the first fight, they surrounded us

Looks like there are too many cooks in the White House kitchen. White House assistant chef Sam Kass, who cooks weekly for President Obama, said Tuesday that he is facing a furlough brought about by crippling federal budget cuts. The chef, who is also the president’s senior nutrition policy adviser, is one of nearly 500 White House employees who are expected to receive furlough notices because of the so-called sequester. Speaking with food reporters Tuesday, Mr Kass said: ‘We’re being furloughed,’ according to Reuters. A White House spokesman who accompanied Kass to the press briefing declined to comment on the

U.S. defenses could intercept a ballistic missile launched by North Korea if it decides to strike, the top American military commander in the Pacific said on Tuesday, as the relationship between the West and the communist government hit its lowest ebb since the end of the Korean War. Amid increasingly combative rhetoric from Pyongyang, Adm. Samuel Locklear, commander of U.S. Pacific Command, said North Korea´s pursuit of nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missiles represents a clear threat to the United States and its allies in the region. Hundreds took to the streets as macabre ‘Thatcher death parties’ were held late into the night across the country, organised by critics of the ´Iron Lady.´ Smashed shop windows, paint bombs and police being attacked were all consequences of the Left´s sick ´celebration´ of Baroness Thatcher´s death. In Brixton, south London, riot police were deployed as the crowds, which had been drinking since 5pm, started to become more aggressive smashing shop fronts and throwing paint bomb. In Liverpool, flares and fireworks were set off outside Lime Street Station by revellers, while in Bristol, seven police officers were injured--one seriously--as violence

Cometh the hour cometh the man. (Or woman). Except it´s not always true, is it? In 1940 we had Winston Churchill. In 1979 we had Margaret Thatcher. But I´m not sure even the most generous apologists for our current Prime Minister would bracket David Cameron in quite the same category. [Snip] One of the key differences between the two lies in their attitude to personal popularity. To the politician it matters greatly, for the primary aim of the politician is to gain and maintain power at regardless of what cost to his principles. Republican congressional candidate Mark Sanford slammed the 2009 federal stimulus package that went to Clemson University’s wind turbine effort--where Democrat rival Elizabeth Colbert Busch is employed--as bad public policy and a poor return on the taxpayers’ investments. By Sanford’s math and reading of Obama administration stimulus allocation figures, the Wind Turbine Drivetrain Testing Facility received $43 million and “created or saved” an estimated 134 jobs. When divided, the numbers calculate to more than $320,000 per job, Sanford said. Sanford’s comments came during a visit to a Mount Pleasant branch of Lyerly’s Cleaners, where he carried in a load

Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered.
