Introducing Florida´s snake
hunters: Eight hundred hopefuls
gather to flush out huge
snake infestation in reward
for cash prizes

An armed mob set out into the Florida Everglades on Saturday to flush out a scaly invader. It sounds like the second act of a sci-fi horror flick but, really, it´s pretty much Florida´s plan for dealing with an infestation of Burmese pythons that are eating their way through a fragile ecosystem. Nearly 800 people signed up for the month-long ´Python Challenge´ that started Saturday afternoon. The vast majority - 749 - are members of the general public who lack the permits usually required to harvest pythons on public lands.

A bounty has been the answer for 10 years. This has been PETA´s fault from the beginning.

Lots of pictures.

Best quote from a participant...
"It´s advantage-snake."
You get to look all day and not find any.

A bit of British levity to accompany this one...

Recall that a few decades ago, we were introduced to the comic troupe...
"Monty Python"

Many years later, there was a movie from the UK which was entitled...
"The Full Monty"

Until that latter movie, most of us did not know of the Brit expression, The Full Monty.
(for those unfamiliar, it means full frontal male human nudity)

Took quite a while, but it finally occurred to me what the longstanding inside joke was.

The comic troupe called themselves "Monty Python" probably to suggest that they
had a "Full Monty" the size of a python.

Wouldn´t you figger that was the intention?
Not quite by accident, that name, right?
Just sayin´...

People in Florida should not be required to pay anything to get a python hunting permit, what should be happening is that the State of Florida should be paying the people a bounty for killing those snakes.

Due in part to the irresponsibility of some people having "exotic pets," this problem now exists. Laws against it don´t work because they´re so east to break, and you ain´t gonna teach common sense.

Does the popular press ever use the word "ecosystem" without using "fragile" as an adjective? I mean, there are such things as "robust ecosystems."

Beautiful snake. But they don´t belong in FL. Problem is that they (and several other released pet pests) have probably been there too long to fully eradicate them from the swamps.

Agree with #7, FL should simply have an open bounty on the invasive species and not require a permit to kill them.

FTA: "It´s very safe, getting out in the Everglades. People do it all the time."

Many come back, too. ´Gators and cougars aren´t always hungry....

The camo is probably pointless, as the snakes detect by sense of smell ["tasting" the air with tongue-flicks] and seeing movement.

FTA: The state is offering cash prizes to whoever brings in the longest python and whoever bags the most pythons by the time the competition ends at midnight Feb. 10.

Heard the same inn a radio report today. It surprised me that there wasn´t a prize for highest total weight. OK, herpetologists -- better to take 10 honkin´ big ones out of the wild, or 12-14 itty-bitty ones?

FTA: (The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals doesn´t approve of the [decapitation] method, though.)

What do they recommend? That the snakes die of old age?

#2: That first photo is powerful, really tells a story.

#5: Why? Easy. $

#10: If asked, the pythons probably would say they have a "robust" ecosystem.

These pests can be found all over Florida and they´ve been spotted in Lake County where we live. I was planning on putting in a doggy door in the screened patio, but after killing 2 rat snakes and a racer snaker (all within a month of installing my patio), I realized I´d end up getting much bigger snakes so I nixed that idea. I have enough problems with the little ones getting under the screen door between the paver seems.

I´m with everyone else -- Florida should be paying people to kill these pests, not requiring people to pay for permits. Let them make money off it by selling the skins.

Also, I thought Florida outlawed Pythons and Boas as pets, but my local Petco has them for sale. Not that outlawing them would solve the problem. It´s illegal to keep an alligator and they find them during drug raids all the time. I just don´t get why people think snakes are pets? Ewwww.

I´m all for getting rid of pythons in south Florida, but the poster bragging of killing beneficial and harmless snakes makes me sad. There is just no lower limit to stupidity, is there? Even the most phobic dimwit could shoo a rat snake away with a broom, and a black racer is generally headed quickly in the opposite direction as soon as it perceives a threat. Guess theposter prefers to be overrun with mice and rats. So foolish.

Well sorry you don´t approve me killing snakes. The racer kept getting in my pool where my kids swim and I´m not sharing my pool and patio with snakes. I´m terrified of snakes and I´m not spending hours trying to shoo one out the screen door while it runs all over the patio and pool - it´s an 1800 square foot area. Oh, I know, I´ll stand there and ask it to please leave the pool area immediately. Boo hoo.

In what’s become a recurring theme, the weekly addresses of President Obama and congressional Republicans offered a preview of the two sides’ political strategies heading into this fall’s midterm elections. Mr. Obama and his fellow Democrats are pushing an income-equality agenda that includes a hike in the nation’s minimum wage and more federal investment into manufacturing, infrastructure, education, and other areas. The GOP, on the other hand, continues to zero in on the president’s health-care reform law and its negative consequences, a tack the party is sure to continue heading toward the November contests. Baghdad -More than 700 people died in violence in Iraq in February, not including nearly 300 reported deaths in western Anbar province, where security forces have been battling Sunni Muslim rebels since January, the United Nations said on Saturday. The world body said local authorities had recorded 298 civilian deaths in Anbar, but that it could not confirm the figures independently due to the chaos in the desert region. Outside Anbar, the bloodshed was worst in Baghdad, where 239 civilians were killed, followed by Salahuddin province to the north with 121 dead. A total of 1,381 people were wounded.

Americans take justifiable pride in the freedoms given to them by nature or God and enshrined in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights. As we seem to be finding out day after day, however, those rights are no longer of any real value; they are, as James Madison suspected they would be, “parchment barriers” against the encroachment of government and a population conditioned to believe that rights originate with that government, not from a higher power.
