OP, that is my concern as well. But I look at these endeavors with a bit of skepticism, even though it has a certain attraction for me and I completely understand why others would be attracted to this type of community as well. However, man is sinful by nature, and even in communities like this, one is not immune from power struggles and attempts to control people. It´s disconcerting that our current Constitutional crisis has brought this on.

I seriously doubt a Waco repeat in this endeavor. The Feds outnumbered the Folks there and were able to slaughter them all. If seven thousand Families inhabit this Citadel and are well armed. The Federales might think twice about taking them on. JMHO.

As I recall, Western Idaho is already a hangout for Aryan Brotherhood types. Is this more of the same.

#8, we´re not at the point of calling these people the "Aryan Brotherhood". I could just as easily join such a group but am not nearly of that category. Like these people, I have realized that the government under Obama has gotten out of control and is on the edge of becoming tyrranical and totalitarian.

I´m just a church lady who doesn´t recognize nor like what Obama & Co have done to America. I want my country back and if I can´t have that, I´ll simply adjourn to a place where I can be left alone, self-sufficient in a place with like-minded people.

I see nothing disturbing with the article but some of the posts in response are quite disturbing. David Koresh was more of a Jim Jones than a Christian hero.

Pledging your lives and fortune is called walking the walk. Many who have pledged to resist tyranny do so only as long as there is no cost to their protestations. In plain language, some of the most vocal would be patriots would hand their guns over to the first "authority" that comes knocking on the door. Collective defense of pioneering communities did more to settle the states west of Allegheny Mountains than did the US Army. Voluntary mutual defense arrangements throughout the countryside make a lot of sense, whether you are defending against urban marauders in a time of upheaval or against a lawless, anti-Constitutional government gone wild.

IIRC, didn´t the founding fathers pledge their lives and fortunes? Many of them lost both, but it was for something they truly believed in. I don´t find this as ´´scary´´ as others here seem to - more like an ´´oh wow, how interesting´´ kind of reaction...

I’m surprised at the number of negative posts here today. Some are missing the salient point of this story.

The Citadelians are ‘John Galting’. They are giving Obama and Washington the finger and will withdraw from American society as much as possible.

As long as their charter includes the fundamentals of the Bill of Rights, I frankly don’t give a hoot what they do behind closed gates. Given that they will all probably be armed to the teeth, I think personal liberties will do just fine.

They will have two economies, one that the IRS can audit and one that’s underground and allusive. They will spread out and influence a large geographical area and it will drive the Feds crazy trying to get the goods on them.

Confrontations with Uncle Sam are bound to happen and that is precisely what we need. We need to confront that Fascist in the WH as much as possible and in as many different ways as possible without committing felonies.

It doesn´t matter how scrupulously they obey the law. They are throwing down the gauntlet to the left. Elements of the left will choose among four responses:

Some leftists will ignore them, in the belief that any attention would only attract more people to the idea.

Some leftists will ridicule them, a la alinsky, akin to how Southerners and the Amish are portrayed as uncool simpletons.

Some will promote the idea, hoping that it will attract others of like mind to become trapped in isolated enclaves.

The last choice will be to demonize them, slander them and accuse them of everything from tax evasion to gun law violations to child abuse. They will be called right-wing militia, nationalists, nazis, neo-nazis, secessionists, separatists, racists, cultists, polygamists, pedophiles, etc.

As I´ve said, it won´t matter how perfectly they obey all federal, state and local laws. The left will want the federal government to spy on them, investigate them, harrass them, frame them, disband them and even liquidate them. Why? For daring to shield themselves and their children from the subtle and overt influences of a media culture and educational system dominated by the increasingly radical left.

This doesn´t sound like-minded...this sounds cult-like.
I know everyone is afraid, but we need to work together to educate, speak the truth fearlessly and stand on principle for others to see.
I can appreciate people wanting to live in a community that is comfortable and filled with people they can converse and do business with, but man´s inherent sinfulness is a problem when it comes to power and control.

Note the modern church. People are fleeing, not because they don´t believe in God, but because of authoritarian pastors who have positioned themselves within their church so no one holds them accountable. Spiritual abuse websites are popping up all over the place from people who have been hurt, shunned and shamed for questioning their pastors, and they no longer trust those in church authority.
This is a very bad idea...good intentions maybe...bad idea.

I´m afraid Idaho is rife with this sort of isolationist thinking and the men in charge are the ones who benefit. Look up Doug Wilson. This is the kind of thinking I´m more fearful of than Obama´s radicalism. I know how to fight that kind of evil.
The other isn´t so easy because it hijacks God and His Word and uses it out of context to control people. I´m certain the very first thing to happen will be to make sure no one questions those in charge.

Re David Koresh, remember he and he alone was wanted on child abuse charges. He routinely left the compound and went into town, and could have been arrested at any time. Instead, the feds had this neat little assault team they had been training and took on the compound as a sort of live-fire exercise. They did have to bring in tanks, which didn´t fire their weapons but did use dozer blades to knock down the walls after potentially lethal amounts of tear gas had been shot into it. In the resulting fire, all 24 children at the compound, who were the objects of the "protection" of the feds, were killed along with the adults.

Cults are bad things. So is tyranny.
