| Finally there is an excuse to pick a good red wine with your Sunday roast--it can diminish the unhealthy effects of eating red meat. Scientists have discovered that a glass of red wine can prevent the build up of cholesterol after a meal of dark or red meat. They found that harmful compounds from the meat would build up in the blood stream of volunteers as they digested a meal, helping to form "bad" cholesterol that can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease. More good news from Israel, source of much investigation regarding prevention of high cholesterol. Six years ago, another Israeli, Michael Aviram, led the team that first discovered red wine was beneficial. He was also the researcher who discovered the beneficial effects of pomegranate juice (now available powdered in capsules) and it does NOT mimic grapefruit juice when mixed with prescription drugs as some claim (nor does it increase glucose levels). Dr. Aviram assured me the juice is safe and sent a copy of research results supporting his statement. Diabetics should celebrate with a glass of real juice (see OldOrchard online)!

Red wine is mentioned in the Bible not only as the first public miracle of Jesus, but as an aid to digestion. About time researchers figured out a glass with a meal is good for you.

Following on OP´s comments, a friend of ours recommended pomegranate juice as a substitute for red wine in cooking. Since my husband is a recovering alcoholic/addict of 31 years, I no longer keep wine in the house and have stopped drinking it as well (though there are times I would love a glass). The first time I drank pomegranate juice I noticed that it has the same sort of astringent quality as red wine.

The best thing I did for myself last year was to give up eating red meat. Now I enjoy drinking red wine as an end in itself.
