US government advises computer

Washington - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is advising people to temporarily disable the Java software on their computers to avoid potential hacking attacks. The recommendation came in an advisory issued late Thursday, following up on concerns raised by computer security experts. Experts believe hackers have found a flaw in Java´s coding that creates an opening for criminal activity and other high-tech mischief. Java is a widely used technical language that allows computer programmers to write a wide variety of Internet applications and other software programs that can run on

Comments:
In a world that is fast becoming running on all things with a CPU [computer], this is scary stuff. And then, Homeland Security mentions it to US, without a clue as to who is responsible or really when a "fix" will be in for US. [Earlier, Iran was attacking major banking computers for freezing their assets.]

If this is run by the same Dep´t as F&F, one wonders if Big Sis might be using this to plant spy software in our computers.

I think I read somewhere yesterday that Apple reacted quickly by disabling a Java 7 plug-in on Macs where it had been installed. Sounds good, but I don´t know if that fixes the entire problem?

Go to oldapps.com then under Misc Utilities
They show about a 3 foot long list of java versions. That is a lot of bug fixing.

BTW this site is a good place to get software not found easily at the parent site. At work we use Java 6 as ver 7 does not work at a site we use from another company.

I use Firefox 9 as ver 17 also does not work at that site. Firefox changes version each month! IE 8 and 9 need Compatibility mode turned on from Tools> Compatibility mode for various websites.

It is a tower of babel out there on the internets....

This appears to be another browser-based attack. They are pretty common. it used to be Microsoft was the biggest target (since they were the biggest desktop & browser market). It usually takes some pressure on the developer (in this case Oracle) to get them to take the problem seriously. It sometimes takes months for Microsoft to get fixes out. I hope that Oracle will act a little quicker.

According to the KimKomando site, it is possible to enable it for a session, but this isn´t advised and to disable it afterward the desired session.

So I removed my old Java and installed Java 7 upload 10, and disabled it for my browser.
Then I decided to enable it to see if I could. I followed the directions exactly, but discovered that I could not enable the site again. I followed the directions on the KimKomando site AND I followed the pop-up directions that came from the error message put out by my browser. Neither set of instructions (which were identical) worked.
My guess is that Java itself disabled Java 7 upload 10 for browers (or, at least, for Internet Explorer).

Dunno about other posters, but most large websites (banks, etc) are constructed mostly in compiled Java.

Have to think that this hysterical "U.S. Government" claim that Java is a problem is totally bogus. Maybe turnoff "Javascript", completely different from Java.

Anyway, if Government is waving a red flag, do the opposite.

Perth, Australia - Australia’s prime minister says searchers hunting for the missing Malaysian jetliner are confident underwater signals that have been picked up are coming from the jet’s black box. Tony Abbott told reporters while on an official visit to China that Australian authorities are confident they know the location of the black box from the plane that disappeared without a trace on March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. The plane’s black boxes, or flight data and cockpit voice recorders, could help solve the mystery of why Flight 370 veered so far off course.
