| The Sheriff´s Department in Caddo Parish, Louisiana is inviting children to participate in the "Kids First Gun Program," which will teach young children how to safely operate firearms. The four hour course, which will be held this Saturday, January 12th, is recommended for children who received a new BB gun, shotgun or hunting rifle for Christmas or for those who may already have a gun. Sheriff Steve Prator told Shreveport Times, "Children who will receive a gun for Christmas can try it for the first time in front of certified law enforcement academy firearms instructors.

Bravo! Kids learn how to use a condom in high school so they will use it correctly. Why not learn about firearm safety so they will use them correctly. Or not use them.

I taught my kids gun safety when they were very young. Now I am doing the same for my grandkids. I am going out plinking with the 7 year old tomorrow. The kid has a pretty good eye.

Interesting!
My son first shot a rifle, "at his request", when he was 4 years old. At 5, he started shooting his rifle 3 or 4 times a week for PE. (he´s homeschooled) At 6 he started shooting a handgun regularly along with his rifle. At 7 he started competing with a pistol. His safety training started before he started shooting. All of his training initially was by me, because I´m qualified to teach and have taken multiple classes myself over the years because of my involvement in competitive shooting. Since my son turned 12 he´s taken outside courses in shotgun because that is not my discipline. Because of my son´s training starting before he started shooting, he is safer than most adults. Training is extremely important, but must be done by someone who actually knows about safety and proper gun handling. Unfortunately this doesn´t include many gun owners, Police, etc, because they weren´t trained correctly themselves. All you have to do to confirm this is go to a public or police range sometime and watch the atrocious gun handling going on all the time there.

The Russian president was confronted by a topless protester with an obscene slogan insulting Mr Putin painted on her back - and, he admitted, he “liked” it. Mr Putin was with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at at a trade fair in Hanover when the woman tried to push her way through to an amused-looking Mr Putin, but was blocked by aides. Her back was painted with an obscene slogan in Cyrillic script directed against the Russian president. The activist was with two other women who also stripped to the waist and shouted slogans calling the Russian leader a “dictator”.

The deep oceans have yielded many mysteries that have puzzled people for centuries, from the giant squid to huge jellyfish that look like UFOs. To that list add a fish with totally transparent blood. The Ocellated Ice Fish lives in the freezing waters of the Antarctic Ocean, where it manages to keep its body doing all the things that other fish do, but with blood that is absolutely clear, researchers told AFP on Friday. The reason, say experts at Tokyo Sea Life Park, is that the Ocellated Ice Fish has no haemoglobin, making it unique among vertebrates the world over.

A family´s criticism of inflight entertainment allegedly prompted a United flight to be diverted over "security concerns." In a story published in The Atlantic, one family recounts traveling from Denver to Baltimore with two young sons, ages 4 and 8. During the flight, the PG-13-rated detective film "Alex Cross" was shown on drop-down monitors across the plane. The family worried about their young children seeing inappropriate content in the film. "Alarmed by the opening scenes, we asked two flight attendants if they could turn off the monitor; both claimed it was not possible," the family said, according to The Atlantic.

A Library of Congress film preservation worker faces federal charges for allegedly posting fake sex ads on Craigslist directing men to his ex-girlfriend. The Star Exponent of Culpeper reports that 61-year-old Kenneth Edward Kuban was charged with stalking a Fauquier County woman he had dated briefly in 2011. Kuban, who works at the Library of Congress Packard campus in Culpeper, allegedly posted the ads from his work computer. Authorities say Kuban made several Craigslist postings each week directing men to his ex-girlfriend´s home for sex or to buy pornographic videos.

We all know that guns can cost lives because the media repeat this message endlessly, as if we could not figure it out for ourselves. But even someone who reads newspapers regularly and watches numerous television newscasts may never learn that guns also save lives-- much less see any hard facts comparing how many lives are lost and how many are saved. But that trade-off is the real issue, not the Second Amendment or the National Rifle Association, which so many in the media obsess about.

Long Beach — Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying three tech-savvy criminals wanted for a series of car burglaries in which they used an unknown device to gain keyless entry to vehicles. The men are accused of breaking into seven vehicles in an East Long Beach neighborhood on the night of Feb. 26, according to Long Beach police. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
