Monster $1 million-plus

Washington Examiner, by Paul Bedard

Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, known for his "Rumsfeld Rules" picked up during 50 years of public and private employment, has nailed down the biggest Washington book deal in a year, a blockbuster seven-figure contract to put his rules of the road down on paper for the first time ever. Broadside Books, a conservative imprint of HarperCollins, said "Rumsfeld´s Rules" will be published in May and it will break his No. One Rule: It will include more than 10. Rumsfeld, 80, told Secrets exclusively: "Over the years I have had the good fortune of working with some

I note that Mr. Bedard limits the time frame to just one year.

As I recall, some carpet-bagging NY senator named Clinton got an $8,000,000 advance for her "memoirs" (Ms. "I don´t recall" Clinton) in 2000.

So 53 percent of Americans disapprove of ObamaCare. But is it me or Republicans behaving like it´s a 100 percent? Because I don´t know about you, but hanging your election hat on 53 percent seems dicey to me. I´m not saying ObamaCare won´t be and shouldn´t be an issue. But stopping action on any other issue in the meantime looks pretty stupid. Look, I was the first to say this Affordable Care Act wasn´t affordable and the promises behind it were just an act. But this Republican act of sitting on the ball and running out the clock, hoping it

Jimmy Carter has been very active in the decades since his presidency, and his successors have occasionally called for his advice. Except, it turns out, the current occupant of the office. A clip from Carter’s upcoming Meet the Press interview reveals that President Obama is the first president since Carter left office not to solicit the Southern Democrat’s advice. Carter explained, “President Clinton did and President George W. Bush and H.W. Bush and even Ronald Reagan used to call on us to go into sensitive areas.” They all asked Carter to deal with “unsavory characters,” but Obama hasn’t reached out to

Last week, President Obama directed his Homeland Security Department to examine its current deportation practices -- "to see how it can conduct enforcement more humanely, within the confines of the law," the White House announced on March 13. But with immigration reform stalled in Congress, what more can Obama do? "I think he´s going to wait until August," said Telemundo anchor and immigration-reform advocate José Díaz-Balart. And if Congress doesn´t act on immigration reform by then, "I wouldn´t be surprised if he starts making some very controversial executive orders to mitigate the pain of millions of people who face deportation," Díaz-Balart told

Susan Rice, national security adviser to President Barack Obama, said on Friday that the administration still believes there is a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine as Russian troops mobilized along the country’s entire eastern border. CBS News reported on Friday that a mass mobilization of Russian forces was taking place on Ukraine’s eastern border with at least twice as many troops as the 20,000 number originally reported. The defense “exercise” included tanks and tactical aircraft and appeared to show signs of a logistical buildup required for a sustained operation. In 2011, over 8,000 kids were suspended from preschool — preschool! — in America. More than half were black, despite comprising less than half of the student population. The odds are probably better than even that you will be annoyed by that. Which is fine. I accept that response. And there are a lot of possibilities that could explain how this bit of data is an aberration. As the Associated Press reports, the

Are you are among the uninitiated lumpenproletariat who believe the decline of the Roman Empire was attributable to a multitude of factors? Do you still naively assume that rampant immorality, political corruption, inability to effectuate regime change without violence and bloodletting, failure to curb runaway inflation, the complete over extension of military resources and the eventual drought of plunder were among the reasons for the fall of Rome? Then you obviously have not read the latest NASA report on how the benighted empire could have avoided collapse if only it had adhered to the tenets of Karl Marx. Apparently, Rome

Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers. The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department´s civil rights arm. The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation´s districts with preschools reported suspending at
