| American Express Co. said it would cut about 5,400 jobs and take about $600 million in after-tax charges in the fourth quarter, which will halve its net income for the period. The credit card company said it would employ 4 to 6 percent fewer people by the end of 2013, compared to its current headcount of 63,500. The company expects to report a profit of $637 million, or 56 cents per share, including the charges. Excluding the items, American Express estimates fourth-quarter adjusted net income at $1.2 billion,

I had a gold card for 15 years and paid every month in full. One month, I was late and contacted them about working out a payment plan. They were not responsive. I paid in full the next month and they cancelled my card. My only hope is that all the 5,400 jamokes who got axed also get the fun of learning how to live without a credit card. It´s tough, but it can be done. Welcome to the new normal...cash or debit card only.

Like Bank of America, American Express is living in a plastic bubble and don´t seem able to relate to their customers.
By the way, it is possible to live without a credit card. Millions do it pain free. Just have to cut the thing up and live in a cash society. Save money. Debit cards seem to be ok.
Had an Amex card years ago. I just wasn´t using it, at all, so I cancelled it when I realized a lot of merchants didn´t accept Amex. Then like millions of others one day years later a personalized invite for a new card came in the mail. Quick like it went into the trash.

Wasn´t it Pelosi who said "Unemployment creates jobs"?
4-6%. Most of that may be normal retirements or early retirement packages. That is speculation of course.
And AE is likely to get productivity gains from capital investment. Even so this isn´t good news for employees.

I don´t use a credit card too often - but it comes in handy for airline tickets when I must fly, or for other purchases on-line. And so far I have had excellent service from AMEX. I have dealt with their customer service people at least a half dozen times and they have always been polite, helpful, American-English speaking, and efficient.
I would prefer to never have to use a credit card but haven´t figured out a way to do that yet. I do feel bad for anyone who loses their job through no fault of their own.

Ramona, same here. We have a Chase Freedom and pay it off every month and get cash rewards.
I have no idea how people book an airline ticket or shop online without a credit card. Or a hotel room., etc.
Pay it off every month..Use their money.

A young diplomat from River Forest was among five Americans killed Saturday in an explosion in Afghanistan, according to her family and the U.S. State Department.
