CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chávez’s supporters have not ruled out swearing him in from his hospital in Havana. His detractors are calling for government investigators to check his pulse themselves. The justices whom Mr. Chávez’s allies have named to the Supreme Court have decided that he can continue to govern in absentia. In a country that Mr. Chávez, 58, has so long dominated, his health crisis and the decision to proceed on Thursday with a quasi-presidential inauguration that he is unable to attend is producing a stream of bizarre developments and national angst about who is in charge.
Comments: They´re gonna swear in the sash and hope nobody notices that Chavez is dead in Cuba.
No end to Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro oral bloopers. In campaign for the municipal elections of 8 December and in the midst of an economic war on big business of which it accuses of promoting inflation and destabilizing his government, a self confession or “sincericide” (a blend of sincerity and suicide) became the delight of social networks ant twitters. In the midst of a fiery and passionate speech he said “capitalists speculate and steal as we do”. “I want to tell shop owners of this country, small and medium, these shop owners that you know so well from your neighborhood, they
Politics: Eighty million Americans are losing health insurance, and 26 million are jobless. But lefty Rep. Linda Sanchez has made oppression of gay and transgender Latinos her priority. Seems the smaller the cause, the better. At a field hearing attended by all of 20 people in Los Angeles on Monday, the California Democrat bemoaned all the time spent on matters such as the slow economy, runaway government spending, the millions losing their insurance under Obama-Care and the 7.8% unemployment rate. Such issues, the congresswoman believes, are diverting attention from problems experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Latinos and Latinas. But then, that
LOS ANGELES — They began showing up at dusk last week, wandering the streets, slumped in wheelchairs and sitting on sidewalks, paper plates perched on their knees. By 6:30 p.m., more than 100 homeless people had lined up at a barren corner in Hollywood, drawn by free meals handed out from the back of a truck every night by volunteers. But these days, 27 years after the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition began feeding people in a county that has one of the worst homeless problems in the nation, the charity is under fire, a flashpoint in the national debate
Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R) left the door open to another presidential run during a Monday panel in New Hampshire. Asked whether he ever thinks about running again — Huntsman dropped out of the 2012 Republican primary after finishing third in New Hampshire — he suggested he hadn´t ruled out the option. He closed a long response to the question, posed at Saint Anselm College, by saying: "Which is a long way of saying that I love public service. I´ll always be committed to public service. And as an itinerant public servant, from time to time, it´s hard to know where
Washington - Only four out of 10 Americans believe President Barack Obama can manage the federal government effectively, according to a new national poll. And a CNN/ORC International survey released Monday morning also indicates that 53% of Americans now believe that Obama is not honest and trustworthy, the first time that a clear majority in CNN polling has felt that way. According to the survey, conducted last Monday through Wednesday, 40% say the President can manage the government effectively. That 40% figure is down 12 percentage points from June and is the worst score Obama received among the nine personal
Justice: As our "friends" in Pakistan trump up new charges against the doctor who was pivotal in the demise of Osama bin Laden, America does nothing. Have we no honor left at all? Ten years of warfare across the globe, billions in treasure and thousands of American service members´ lives — all to hunt down the most heinous terrorist who ever lived. But what that victory came down to was the brave cooperation of one courageous individual. Dr. Shakil Afridi worked with the Central Intelligence Agency to persuade members of the bin Laden family
The United Nations maritime tribunal has ordered Russia to free a Greenpeace vessel and 30 people detained after an oil drilling protest in the Arctic. The court in the German city of Hamburg said a bond of 3.6 million Euros should be posted. A Russian statement after the ruling said the Hamburg tribunal had no jurisdiction in the case. The Arctic Sunrise and its crew were detained in September. All but one of those held have now been granted bail. The vessel was sailing under a Dutch flag when it was stopped and searched. The Dutch authorities, who brought the case, argued
Venezuelan Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace Miguel Rodríguez Torres thinks that the government should take action against daily newspaper El Universal for releasing on Wednesday on its front page a photo of a blood stain after a crime. He made such remarks to TV channel Venevisión. The photo shows blood remains and the arm of the victim who was killed by his kidnappers. The minister encouraged the family members of the deceased to sue the newspaper as well. "This photo undoubtedly deserves a lawsuit against the daily newspaper and we will make a great effort to make it
In the home stretch of the 2012 presidential campaign, from August to September, the unemployment rate fell sharply — raising eyebrows from Wall Street to Washington. The decline — from 8.1 percent in August to 7.8 percent in September — might not have been all it seemed. The numbers, according to a reliable source, were manipulated. And the Census Bureau, which does the unemployment survey, knew it. Just two years before the presidential election, the Census Bureau had caught an employee fabricating data that went into the unemployment report, which is one of the most closely watched measures of the economy. And a knowledgeable
Latin America´s fuel purchases from the United States have doubled for five years in an attempt at keeping the economies on. Meanwhile, dependence grows despite the region´s vast oil reserves. In the case of Venezuela, in addition to delaying joint refining projects abroad, state-owned oil company Pdvsa has made no strides with the expansion of its internal refining network at 1.3 million barrels per day (bpd). The oil giant has planned three new refineries for its portfolio, in addition to the expansion of two middle-sized units. However, Pdvsa has put off inauguration days. It now wants to add some 25,000 bpd to
MEXICO CITY – Residents of Tancitaro, a city in the western Mexican state of Michoacan, armed themselves and killed nine members of the Caballeros Templarios drug cartel, a self-defense group leader said. The incident occurred on Saturday after residents armed with rifles and pistols gathered in the city’s plaza after hearing the bells at the main Catholic church pealing, Jose Manuel Mireles, a physician and leader of one of the nine self-defense groups operating in Michoacan, told Efe. Armed civilians and members of the vigilante groups in the nearby cities of Buenavista Tomatlan, Tepalcatapec and Coalcoman provided support to the armed residents
CHAMBERSBURG - Know your constituency. It´s the first rule of local politics. The second: What happens in New York City usually can only happen in New York City, and is best kept there. Policies that fit “The Big Apple” don´t fit a town that is, say, known statewide for its Apple Festival. Just ask Democrat Pete Lagiovane, the mayor of this Franklin County town who won´t return to office in January. He lost his bid for re-election — to a seat he won unopposed the last time — in part because he signed up Chambersburg as one of New York Mayor Michael
Cher told her fans on Wednesday that she does not celebrate Thanksgiving. In fact, she appears to deplore the American holiday, calling in the “beginning of a great crime.” Cher said that the American settlers were guilty of taking land from native Americans who had no concept of property ownership and also intentionally infected them with smallpox. “You don’t celebrate the holiday I thought?” a fan asked Cher. “I DON’T,” Cher replied emphatically. She said that, to her, Thanksgiving is a day to see family, eat food together and watch a movie. “Not 2 celebrate the beginning of a GREAT Crime.” When asked
President Obama's weekly remarks: Hi, everybody. On behalf of all the Obamas — Michelle, Malia, Sasha, Bo, and the newest member of our family, Sunny — I want to wish you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. We’ll be spending today just like many of you — sitting down with family and friends to eat some good food, tell stories, watch a little football and. most importantly, count our blessings. And as Americans, we have so much to be thankful for.
LEE COUNTY - The Lee County Sheriff´s Office has arrested a juvenile in connection with two random attacks reported in Lee County. Traveshia Blanks, of Fort Myers, is charged with two counts of battery on a person 65 years of age or older. On Tuesday around 3:50 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a group of people who randomly attacked an unsuspecting victim (Snip)We talked to students from nearby Cypress Lake High School who didn´t seem to think the teens did anything wrong. "I´m not gonna say it´s not right and it´s not fun, because it is fun," said
Economics: It seems the official position of Pope Francis is that the free market is a wicked enemy that must be restrained. With all due respect, he´s mistaken. The free market has been a heavenly blessing. Two days before our American Thanksgiving, the Argentinian pontiff, in his first apostolic exhortation, called the free market a "new tyranny." "Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world," he wrote in the Vatican report. Claims of free-market success, he said, have "never been confirmed
President Obama is concerned these days with the "young invincibles," the 20-somethings he needs now to buy into his program, but who probably won´t because they feel (you guessed it) invincible and think they will stay so for quite a long time. But it takes one to know one, as the irony is Obama himself is, or once was, an ultra-invincible, unstoppable and doing what people said couldn´t be done. Could he become world famous on the strength of one speech? Yes, he could. Could he beat Hillary Clinton, a president´s wife and a feminist icon? Yes, he could. Could he
One day after a new poll showed that only a minority of Americans trust President Barack Obama, the president told an audience that his policies are based on kindness. “Kindness covers all of my political beliefs,” Obama told his audience of wealthy investors, high-tech donors, journalists and fellow Democrats Tuesday, only two months after he slashed at GOP legislators, calling them arsonists, nuclear blackmailers, economic wreckers, hostage-takers, obsessives and irresponsible extremists. “When I think about what I’m fighting for, what gets me up every single day, [kindness] captures it just about as much as anything,” he told his audience at the DreamWorks
President Barack Obama told a Democratic fundraiser in Beverly Hills Tuesday that he has accomplished "as much, if not more" than any other president."Over the last five years, thanks to the leadership of Nancy (Pelosi) and Harry (Reid) and legislators who are here, we have accomplished as much, if not more, than any time in our history -- saving an economy from a Great Depression; revitalizing an auto industry that is producing better cars and has come roaring back like nobody believed; doubling our exports; drastically reducing our dependence on foreign oil; doubling fuel efficiency standards; doubling our production of
In the wake of the Obamacare fiasco, President Obama’s poll numbers are collapsing in two industrial Midwestern states — the quintessential swing state of Ohio and his home state of Illinois. In Illinois, the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling found Obama’s approval rating falling to just 50–46 positive in a state he carried by 17 points just a year ago. His biggest drops in support came among women voters (only 50 percent positive) and Hispanics (only 51 percent positive). Without his overwhelming support among African-Americans (92 percent), his approval rating would easily be in the low 40s. The liberal website
Reports of bias incidents at Vassar College that involved hateful messages left on students’ doors were actually elaborate hoaxes — and the perpetrator is none other than the student member of the Bias Incident Response Team, The Daily Caller has learned. This fall semester at the liberal arts college in New York saw a curiously high number of bias incident reports. [snip] The task force had one student member: Genesis Hernandez, who is transgendered and was also a vice president of the Vassar Student Association (VSA), the student government.
Bias: After spending three years promoting ObamaCare lies, the media elite now scramble to get out of the way of a train wreck they helped cause. Their backpedaling would be funny if so many lives weren´t at risk. As the redistributive mechanics of ObamaCare rear their ugly head, the president´s propaganda puppets are suddenly sounding like conservative critics. Take the New York Times. In a fit of candor, it now agrees with what we´ve said all along — "redistribution of wealth lies at the heart of" the Affordable Care Act. The paper reported that "economic justice" was Obama´s real goal in taking over
The day before Thanksgiving 2013 shall hereby be known as “Richard Simmons Makes Hilarious Media Appearances Day.” The fitness guru dropped by the HuffPost Live studios to talk about his efforts in fighting childhood obesity. The conversation became critical of the Obama family when Simmons revealed that he was rejected in his attempt to join the First Lady in her “Let’s Move!” campaign. “I’m just not their set of sheets,” he told host Ricky Camilleri while wearing a set of anatomical muscle leggings and a “SWEAT” tank top. Simmons bristled at Camilleri’s suggestion that perhaps the White House doesn’t want to be
Responding to an angry constituent’s letter about the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama allegedly used a sexually charged derogatory term referring to members of the Tea Party movement. Thomas Ritter, a fifth-grade school teacher from Irving, Texas, has sent the president a note criticizing Obamacare--the controversial law offering health care to the uninsured, which has become the butt of jokes following a disastrous launch last month. ´This bill has caused such a divisive, derisive and toxic environment... The reality is that any citizen that disagrees with your administration is targeted and ridiculed,´ the Texas man wrote to the commander-in-chief.
