Baseball Hall of Fame 2013
voting fails to produce inductee

Washington Times [DC], by Marc Lancaster

Original Article

The Baseball Hall of Fame will hold its induction ceremonies for the Class of 2013 as scheduled July 28, but most of the usual buzz in Cooperstown, N.Y., likely will be absent. None of the 37 candidates on the writers’ ballot for the Hall of Fame received the 75 percent of votes required for induction in results announced Wednesday afternoon, just the third time since 1965 that no one has met the threshold. First-time candidate Craig Biggio came the closest among modern candidates, garnering 68.2 percent of the votes from 569 ballots cast by an electorate

The steroid scandal has ruined baseball records for all time. Obviously Babe Ruth didn´t take steroids, so if his record was broken by someone who did, then there is simply no telling what that record breaker might have produced if not on steroids.

It is my opinion that if a player does not make it the first time eligible, then what makes it different if he´s elected on 2,3,4 tries? I hope Rose never gets in as well as the steroid junkies. Another thing that has ruined my serious interest in baseball is interleague play and the 3 division format.

Perhaps it´s time to open a Rascals/Scalawags/Miscreants Wing at Cooperstown, and populate it with the modern-day basballers with careers tainted by wrongdoing.

If you know your baseball history all the way back to the original opening day, you already know that the Baseball Hall of Fame has always been populated with rascals, scalawags and miscreants. That´s baseball. We call those old dead guys "colorful" now.

Only "mere scraps of data documented" Barack Obama´s mother´s "days in Seattle," writes Obama biographer David Maraniss in his 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. Incidentally, Maraniss was telling the truth: Ann´s "days in Seattle" weren´t mentioned in Dreams from my Father and were only vaguely implied in Maraniss´s lengthy 2008 article. And it appears that the only "scraps" of evidence of Obama´s mother´s time in Seattle during 1961-1962 was a listing in a Seattle Polk directory and a University of Washington (UW) transcript. And it appears that the only "mere scraps" of evidence of baby Barack´s time in Seattle are

Quite a quartet. Quite a variety of famous men, and a woman no one ever heard of, all members of a generation rapidly headed for judgment and reward, all dead in the past few days. I knew two of them — Admiral Jeremiah Denton and Secretary James Schlesinger — fairly well, and I spent years in the nightmare supervised by Judge Walsh when he was special prosecutor in the Iran-Contra matter. I never knew Wendy Davis, but her obituary is a disaster, and I’m going to correct it. But first the famous men. It’s hard to render more honor to

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, on the heels of an internal review that cleared him in the still-churning road closure scandal, told Fox News he feels exonerated and indicated the ordeal will not impact his decision on whether to run for president in 2016. “There’s no baggage here because I didn’t do anything,” the Republican governor told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly on “The Kelly File” when asked whether the scandal would hinder a presidential run. The governor spoke with Fox News on Friday just hours before giving his first press conference since the scandal broke in early January. A day earlier,

Mark Witaschek never had a firearm in the District of Columbia, but he is now on the city’s Gun Offenders Registry. This bizarre case has drawn national attention because an upstanding citizen was tried and convicted of possessing unregistered ammunition for muzzleloader bullets, which are simply pieces of lead and copper. On Friday afternoon, I accompanied Mr. Witaschek and his wife, Bonnie, to Metropolitan Police Department headquarters to abide by the terms of his sentence, which meant registering within 48 hours. Immediately inside the front doors and metal detectors is the Gun Offenders Registry Unit, which has suddenly appeared in

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Jerry Brown called on three scandal-plagued state senators to resign on Friday, speaking out for the first time on a series of criminal cases that have sapped Democrats´ power in the Capitol and tarnished the Legislature´s image. Brown´s statement comes hours after the Senate voted to suspend Sens. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), Ronald S. Calderon (D-Montebello) and Roderick D. Wright (D-Inglewood). “Given the extraordinary circumstances of these cases – and today’s unprecedented suspensions – the best way to restore public confidence is for these senators to resign," Brown said. PITTSBURGH — A suburban Pittsburgh teenager has published a study suggesting the federal government could save millions of dollars a year in printing costs by switching to a thinner typeface that uses less ink. Fourteen-year-old O´Hara township resident Suvir Mirchandani says there was plenty of talk at school about saving paper and he wondered about saving ink. He said Friday the amount of ink the government might use "was really surprising" to him. He says he hopes to make people aware choosing certain fonts for printing can save ink and money. Pope Francis surprised his own master of ceremonies on Friday by confessing his sins to an ordinary priest in St. Peter´s Basilica. The pope was presiding at a service intended to show the importance he attaches to the sacrament of reconciliation, commonly known as confession. After reading a sermon, he was to have gone to an empty confessional booth to hear confessions from ordinary faithful as some 60 priests scattered around the huge church did the same. His master of ceremonies, Monsignor Guido Marini, pointed him toward the empty booth but the pope went straight to a another one, knelt

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas. Some of these methane emissions come from

When Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis a little more than a year ago, the first thing that struck those who knew him well was his unexpected, beatific smile. “In Argentina, he didn’t smile like that,” Sergio Rubin, the pope’s biographer, said this week at a conference sponsored by the Ethics and Public Policy Center. “That was the big surprise.” Since then, the pope has mostly kept on smiling — in homilies, in audiences, in meetings with the homeless and the poor. If you look at the pictures from Francis’ meeting with President Obama on Thursday, though, the smile is there only some of the time.

In a report published Thursday, Public Health England said it concluded TB samples taken from the cat and from two people in contact with the animal were “indistinguishable” and that the cat was considered to be “the likely source of infection.” Between December 2012 and last April, veterinarians identified TB in nine pet cats in Berkshire and Hampshire, west of London.
