He starts out saying that he has the right to not own a gun and still feel safe, then he starts talking about not having a gun and being safe. Feeling safe and being safe are two different things. He has every right to feel safe. However, it is not my responsibility to make him feel safe. It is NOT the government´s responsibility to make him feel safe. As to BEING safe, it is still not anybody´s responsibility but his own to arrange for him to be safe. You do not have a right to "be safe". Whether or not you are safe is more a matter of the decisions that you make. For example, I would recommend that he not go to Chicago because he is unlikely to be safe there (despite having very restrictive laws regarding gun ownership). On the other hand, if he were to go to Kennesaw, Georgia, he would probably be very safe BECAUSE they require the head of every household to own a gun.

In fact, you have a moral obligation to be able to protect yourself and your family.

It´s a nice thought but it´s just not reality.

The Declaration of Independence says we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Keeping the first two requires a knowledge of firearms...the third is up to you; you have a right to the pursuit, not the happiness/safety itself. That´s my judicial ruling for the day.

Sorry for the 2nd post but I am sitting in a middle school that is currently getting new security measures and equipment. I would like our staff to have more protection than a stapler if someone happens to get into our building with a gun. Just imagine if a few people were armed in that school instead of just sitting there waiting to be picked off like turkeys at a shoot.

I don´t know about Charles, but for myself, I DO feel safer knowing that those around me are armed. If I can´t take out the next nut-job, one of my neighbors will.

Sure Mr. Blow, you should feel safe. But, with or without a gun, is crime going to stop? If legislation could end crime, murder would have ended millennia ago. Gun-banning legislation will not stop assaults and murders using firearms. So some people would like the protection of a handgun in addition to the police. If you prefer to not have a gun, I suggest awareness of surroundings and caution.

Charles, every right you enjoy, including freedom and the pursuit of happiness derives from the Constitution of the United States, which was established after hard fought and won wars by good people with guns. Those rights remain after many subsequent wars fought and won by good people with guns. Police are mostly good people with guns, but they are not always around when you need them. There are MANY other good people with guns, and you are safer as a result thereof. You take the guns away from the good people and you will certainly not be safer, no matter how you feel.

Charles, I´m going to type this real slowly and use small words so you can understand. Nobody and I do mean nobody is insisting that you have a gun. Your fellow travelers are however insisting that nobody should have them just because they don´t want anybody to have one. Do you see the difference here? And as other posters have stated, the Constitution does not guarantee your right to "feel" or not "feel" anything or anyway. It does most certainly guarantee the right of citizens to bear arms.
