Can’t we aim higher than ‘Honey Boo Boo’?

| No one forced me, but I finally decided it was time to discover what all the business was about Honey Boo Boo. Even though I’ve made reference to the show featuring a former beauty tot, now 7, and her family, I’d never actually watched a full episode. I still haven’t, but I watched enough to need a jaw adjustment. Alas, a few minutes with “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” confirms that even mindlessness has its limits. It gives me no pleasure to add to the ridicule of Honey, whose real name is Alana, or her family.

To answer the header´s question: No, I don´t think "we" can (Whoever "we" is). Who would have thought--four years ago, say--that this kind of rubbish would be so hugely popular?
Parker´s choice of ancient Alexandria as a comparison, whether she actually did switch channels and find herself "sinking into a warm bath," as she describes the experience, reeks of a very lofty, sniffy and condescending superiority.
Rather than emphasizing her own highly superior brand of culture, Parker should have set about criticizing those who, like spectators at a car wreck, watch the series, program after program. But, then, that would be insulting a major part of the Obama constituency, I think.
Am I being superior? Superior to Kathleen Parker? I suppose I am!

However, I hope the Boo-Boo family understands it is being ridiculed and doesn´t mind.

The Honey Boo Boo circus serves on great purpose-- to show many white people to be fools and idiots. There is an especially heavy emphasis on people from the South being backward and ignorant of the smart and urbane ways of those in the more learned liberal "north".
This is a money=making sideshow that delivers the message that people in the South (who tend not to vote for libs, or are made to seem backward and unenlightened) should not be trusted to lead the loyal opposition to this strange regime in charge in Washington or their friends in the media should show us how to live our lives.

The rest of the article aside, I agree with her that the fact of an audience that supports this show (as well as many others) is depressing. To me it explains - or at least exposes a symptom - of many deep problems in the country, including how Obama got reelected. And yes, it exploits white trash, which is one of the last groups that can be exploited this way without backlash and accusations of racism.

#21, The Beverly Hillbillies weren´t presented as illiterate rednecks. They were presented as ´backwards´, but their ´backward´ ways were often clearly better than the snooty, arrogance of their ´betters´ in the city. I remember them as salt of the earth types and recall several shows that ended with the ´city folk´ joining in on the ´backwards´, down-home fun.
#9, I would like to continue with your thesis. I have thought for some time that there are several shows that seem designed to make ´southern´ people into foreigners. I get so annoyed when I see shows like Swamp People and Moonshiners using subtitles, as if we couldn´t understand ´their language´.
I thought it was just hollywood arrogance but I think you are right; I think this is another attempt to separate and divide.
For what it´s worth, #22, I´ve seen a couple of commercials and, while I don´t have any trouble with southern accents, that little girl does not ´talk normal´. I think it is a combination of baby talk and dialect.

Looks like it’s Let’s Make a Deal time this month, except perhaps for budgets, at least for the moment. At the same time the Senate has cut a deal on gun control by, er, making the status quo slightly more muscular, the Gang of Eight has reached a deal in principle on immigration. (Snip) The schedule outlined by the aides is meant to satisfy Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who has said repeatedly that he wants a full debate and amendment process, to maximize the chances that the final vote is an overwhelming majority.

‘Comprehensive immigration reform,” a deal on which is reportedly imminent, has a lot of moving parts — too many, in truth, as with most “comprehensive” legislation. Among the costs of comprehensivism is that debate over such bills often gets bogged down in the many details. Americans seeking to evaluate any deal should ask three questions about it to cut through the noise. First: Will it encourage future illegal immigration? This has always been the greatest risk of proposals to provide legal status for current illegal immigrants: that it will be seen as a reason for others to come here illegally

How many federal agencies does it take to do catfish safety inspections? At least three, according to the Government Accountability Office, which on Tuesday released its 2013 report on fragmentation and duplication of federal programs. This year´s report -- there were two previous editions of the report first requested by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. -- documents an estimated $95 billion in duplicative programs that waste precious tax dollars. That brings the three-year total of potential savings documented by GAO to $295 billion. Having three agencies doing catfish safety inspections may strike some as funny, but there is nothing to laugh about

WASHINGTON — Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. showed up late at an event last week, saying he was delayed because “the president keeps those meetings going longer.” But he walked into a Hillary Clinton crowd. Outside, supporters hoisted signs urging her to run for president. Inside, she was greeted as a hero. Not that Mr. Biden was an afterthought. He had plenty of friends in the room. But at the Kennedy Center, where women’s achievements were being honored by an organization Mrs. Clinton helped found, even Mr. Biden recognized that the best applause line belonged to her.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.
