If we reach the following highly unpleasant conclusion, what are the implications? The United States has taken a political turn which, at least for the next four years, will guarantee that it does not play the role of a great power mindful of and willing to protect its own true interests, to support its allies, and to combat its real foes. On the contrary, through inaction or active effort the leadership of America will take counterproductive actions that achieve the opposite result. And there are certain factors — radical ideological hegemony, a weak economy
Comments: No longer the world leader?
A very thought-provoking article - Rubin takes up how this (he calls it "involuntary, not inevitable") decline in the United States will affect those at-risk parts of the world - Israel, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, East Asia, South America, the Afghans who opposed the Taliban, etc. - that have looked to the United States for support and even protection. Who will be there for them? Putin?
Sorry, but drive-by Replies will look ridiculous here...
I can see why China and India aren´t considered to be world leaders with the potential to succeed the United States. They won´t have the interests of anybody but themselves in mind and won´t care what happens in and/or to other countries, though they would have the power to intervene if they so desired. So, when the U.S. is no more there won´t be any country that will come to the rescue of any other country.
Pardon a second post, so as to postulate a thought re, #3.
America has spent blood and treasure around the globe for freedom. Perhaps (as with the war on poverty and the war on drugs) China and India and others are right, that it doesn’t make a difference, or at least, a difference worth the cost.
Should be a Must Read. This last sentence says it all:
~~Here, however, is the main point I wish to communicate: Americans can debate whether this shorter-term vacuum of responsibility and longer-term decline is happening, but much of the world already takes this outcome for granted.~~
I always thought it was curious & interesting in Revelations how when describing the wars, there is nothing referring to the west. There´s Persia, Gog, Magog, & Israel. Now, with this administration it is clear there will be no support of Israel. Now I understand.
If we continue down the current path much longer we´ll come to think of the Brotherhood as moderates. The real danger is North Africa and Syria. From Tunisia to the Sinai, south to Mali to Nigeria, Niger and the CAR the region is turning into a giant terror state. There are bedouin terror elements in the Sinai that outgun the Egyptian army and they´re on Israels doorstep. Without the US to provide some sense of stability the region could explode. The consequences will turn up as suicide bombers at your favorite mall or maybe a dirty bomb at the airport.
I think we tell everyone we´re pulling back for a while to recover - after all, we don´t/won´t have a choice much longer. For our embattled friends, we can sell them a lot of surplus gear for cheap that we´ll not be able to afford to deploy any longer. Then ( assuming we instead don´t keep digging our hole deeper), we get our house in order. Then we can afford to be a/the world power again.
Yes, it´s happening all around us. I believe that it is entirely possible that there will be an outbreak of regional wars. This actually has already happened over the last ten years. More than half the world has been involved in one form or another on one side or another. For it to escalate would seem from my point of view to be likely based on the catastrophic economic state the world finds itself in. The World Wars were started for this very reason. Conditions were economically disastrous nearly everywhere and most of those conditions were in place because the Economic Movers and Shakers, businessmen nearly everywhere, were derided and castigated nearly universally.
I´m puzzled as to who is the real enemy that we would fight? On the local scene, who is it that we fight to put it all right? On the national scene who is it that we fight to get control over all the reckless spending that is putting us as a nation in the poorhouse? Who do we force to stop the uncontrolled and escalating taxation that is impoverishing us all? What do we do to stop the economic badmouth? Who on a world wide basis is going to step up and start the healing process? Is it a country or a belief system that will be the leader? Will it be finally Pax Americana that starts the recovery from the ashes of fundamental reform when none was needed in the first place?
When Obama started office, I predicted he would be an incompetent leader that would get a lot of good people killed unless he was willing to learn on the job and change. It appears now that he is too ideologically rooted and arrogant to consider learning from those more competent than him. The guy knows only how to mock his predecessor and productive people but he can´t do the job of the presidency.
Clint Eastwood was right about Obama but corrupt voters got bribed into voting for an incompetent lying politician. They are about to find the true costs of their misguided votes in terms of American blood and treasure especially around the world when, not if, the Middle East gets into a thermonuclear war.
This, I believe, gets to the heart of the Left´s real agenda in getting a man like Obama stationed in the White House - the very intentional decline of US power in a world of nuclear arms and terrorist WMD threats. You do the math..
It is kind of ironic that the son of a British citizen of Kenya has done nothing for Africa. Well, Michelle did visit Nelson Mandela a couple of years ago....
And it is also ironic that all these "one world" types, etc are the first ones to attack US foreign policy in which we are actively engaged with other countries; either to liberate (Iraq), but then complain when we don´t invade Sudan or say nothing about the US led air war on Libya last year.
I was having lunch at a panera here in MA, yesterday. I was listening to two young women talk. One was telling the other that she had a friend who had voted for obama and now was upset that things were not going well. The young woman told her friend that she had warned her and what else could she expect from this potus? More or less a "I told you so". The other young woman said she was going through the same thing with her friends. As we watch our children mature and have real life experiences, hopefully they will learn the lesson and grow up to never elect anyone like obama again. And our country has been down and out before, check your history books. We have struggled and come back. I´ll still bet my money on this country even while it is breaking my heart.
While it would be hard to argue with Rubin´s assessment of the international effects of having Barack Obama & Co. as our POTUS for another 4 years, one thing was not addressed: What happens within America´s borders during this time? What is being planned to take America down the drain via socialism or worse, totalitarianism?
We know only what we see happening here in America. What we don´t know is what may kill us as a free nation.
Were I Rubin, I´d write another well-reasoned article about what will happen to Obama´s America within the time he is permitted to reign with the iron fist he wields right now.
The thing to understand is, this is what Obama WANTED He doesn´t believe in American exceptionalism as Truman did or even as LBJ (a terrible President) did. Even Clinton, though he didn´t really care about American exceptionalism, wasn´t hostile to it.) But Obama and many millions of others in control of the unions, the academy, entertainment, religion and other important institutions do NOT believe in it and have for at least two generations were actively working against it. It appears they have won.
The day after the election in 2008, I wrote to a Canadian friend that she should also be worried about Owebama. I told her that he was out to take America down and that, if America went down, the rest of the world would follow. She thought I was being arrogant. I think I´ll send her this article.
Here´s something to consider as well, Bummer wants to seriously cut our nuclear arsenal perhaps as low as 300, I can imagine that he will eventually cut those too claiming he expects the rest of the world to follow suit, can you say suicide?
From the foundations of The New World Order, America´s middle class was to be folded into the poor through tactics such as "Earned income Credit", open borders, and various unsustainable subsidies the middle class is supposed to maintain. This is bi-partisan and the only difference was that the right was using warfare and the left was using welfare. This installs a corporate/banking oligarchy that Prescott Bush supported during WWII. It ain´t just Obama.
"Our allies have no reasonable protector?" Neither do we, the American citizens, Mr. Rubin. Global concern will be secondary to what is happening internally in our country, though it is all inexorably linked.
obama is merely a means to an end. I mean litterally the end. As long as we have a government in place that can use the tax system to buy votes that allow one segment of the population to take from the productive segment and reward those who gain power from implementing the taxes then we are at an end of freedom already. Unless there is a federal government willing to spend its responsible citizenry into bankruptcy then the end is upon us. I don´t see any change even if all the takers figured out that eventually there will be nothing left. I pray a great deal.
Bottom line, do whatever you can to put yourself in a position that avoids as much Government as possible. You cannot defeat Government. We live in California and have always voted Conservative. We even got "involved" with phone calls etc. When we realized voting is not the answer (for Calif) we moved to a California County that is 75% Conservative. We live in a town that is unincorporated, meaning few laws and regulations. Everyone owns guns and know how to use them. The school board is Conservative. The sheriff is Conservative. On and on. We are at piece with this great country and live the good life. It is all about choices. We chose less money, less dependent on Government yet more freedom and more control of our own lives. We will continue to vote Conservative but we no longer let politics rule our life.
I agree with #22. I am a Texan first. Should Texas choose to leave the union, I will stand with Texas. It is MY country. Other free states are welcome to come along. The federal government can go to hell. Enough!
This is so disconcerting. I am reading Killing Kennedy now and it is shocking when you read how concerned we were about Communism and now there are Communists running Washington. I just don´t know how we recover from the damage 0bama and his terroristic regime has caused and will cause in the next four years.
So what do those outside the United States do to face this situation? (Please note that I am speaking here only of U.S. foreign policy and just remarking on the domestic situation.) Please read another excellent article that details the economic situation we are in. It is in Rolling Stone no less (Drudge-ified by Truth Alliance) and a very long read but extremely eye opening and jaw dropping. As some know, I have been referring to these kinds of things since the summer of 2007 just before the sub-prime meltdown (remember the Subprime Primer? I posted that url way back then). However, this recent article gives a brilliantly clear picture of how and why we will not and cannot climb out or pack up and parallels via the economy After The Fall; http://truthalliance.net/Archive/News/tabid/67/ID/10202/Secrets-and-Lies-of-the-Bailout.aspx. Our current economy wrt our currency is NOT backed by full faith and credit of the USA. It is backed now ONLY by belief in what is NOT true and what does not exist.
Unfortunately our decline began long ago. Most elections used to be won or loss based on platforms like jobs, foreign policy and budgets. People who followed those issues voted. Many of today’s electorate used to not vote because they didn’t understand the issues. The Democrats, however, have learned how to run a masterful campaign of deceit to get them out. This year they even added early voting shenanigans like recruiting rest home residents. Romney ran a classic issues based campaign and lost. He lost to people who didn’t have a clue about what he was talking about. Minorities came out in droves to vote against the white guy who would put them back in chains. Young women voted against the zealot who would return them to forced motherhood. You can go down the list of groups that Democrats exploited with their outrageous lies. Given the current state of affairs, I’m not optimistic.
Seems that the rest of the world already knows what the movie 2016 Obama´s America so well pointed out. Some others will step up and succeed regardless. At least until that nation also demonizes freedoms, responsibilty, self respect and self reliance. We are in a bad way.
Don´t blame me for what is happening, #32. I am asking conservatives to demand the creation of conservative mainstream media, but hear no answers. Yesterday Mark Levin (After the elections I can stand talk radio for 5 min/week) said that we need to fight, talk with our kids and grandkids, find conservative candidate, support it, blah, blah, blah... What a lame talk! I don´t blame him either, but he is talking for millions of dollars (kudos to him, he found his niche!). And I don´t hear him exposing Roves and Preibuses for who they are. We gave them our money and our time, our volunteering and they completely screwed it up. I am saying for several years, we need conservative mainstream media - lefties, fascists and commies, know that, that is the way hitler, lenin/stalin, chavez and obozo won the power. But our repubics are totally oblivious of this concept. Rush is sitting on his couple hundred million contract and he never said a word about it! Why? Am I wrong about it? Where is the place we can discuss conservative candidates, our public figures, what they do right or wrong? How is it possible that we learn about it from a "friendly" nyt or wapo or alphabets? Or from rumors? Not in open discussion! Lenin was writing newspaper articles on internal communist party issues in COMMUNIST newspapers. Not in nyt, not in wapo. But we, conservatives in America, see how repubics´s dirty laundry is exposed in lefties mainstream media! Of course, with complete objectivity
As I have been posting for some time now, the only fix I can see for what´s happening in our country is to rise up and have us a nice little revolution. And by that, I mean to completely get rid of everyone in Washington and start completely over. We have a good base to start from, our current Constitution. It just needs to have a few tweaks made to it in order to prevent what has happened. After all, didn´t Thomas Jefferson write in the Declaration that it is the right and duty for men to rise up and throw off a tyrannical government? And it´s clear as it can be that we have a tyrannical government right now.
All it would take is enough citizens to rise up, call for the formation of a militia, and do it. The question is, do we have those citizens among us? I don´t have the resources to do it, but at age 68, I´m ready to sign up and do my part.
Determine to support the tried-and-true authentic foundational principles which support Life, Liberty and Justice for all. ´´Just say NO!´´ to all the illusionary theatrical counterfeits who are muscling their thuggish way into the political/media arena right now. Pray for discernment in order to not to be deceived by their bogus promises, conjured up in stealth in order to snatch away the personal freedom of each individual American citizen through all sorts of political/media trickery. View the current pop media and the lefty/lib statist pols as one & the same because at the moment they apparently are. Both apparently irrationally despise Old Glory and the blessings of Liberty for which it stands.
...And read Mark Levin´s best sellers, ´´Liberty and Tyranny,´´ and, ´´Ameritopia,´´ ...ASAP!
Don´t ever think 0bama is incompetent. It´s hard to comprehend that a president of the US would hate the people as much as he does. He does hate us. It was obvious to me in 2007 & 2008. Oh everyone fawned over the nice clean 0bama. I even gave a thought to looking at him with unbiased eyes. The more he campaigned the more it became clear to me that he was/is a communist and that he wants to "transform" the USA into a communist "state." I am cynical. I´m considered an "elderly person". A veteran of the USNavy. Sorry but I don´t see a change for the better coming our way in the near or distant future. I say permanently kaput. In my opinion I see no current politician, pubbie or dem, interested in putting this country back on the right track. I see self-interest; an insatiable desire for power no matter what the consequences. I´m not so interested in what the rest of the world thinks of us (at this point). I dream of decency and respect for life. Honor. Morality. Love of country. I wish the best for all the younger folks. We need God.
It occurs to me that the citizenry is better armed than it ever has been. It also occurs to me that being armed will not be enough. I am old and pray to live to see the restoration of this once great country.
I have stopped speaking to, working with or doing business with anybody I know voted for the Dems. I am supporting my conservative friends in any way I can.
I agree that there is no single power to challenge us. But in the 1930s it was the same way and three powers emerged (Germany, Italy, Japan), joined forces, and plunged the world into a massive war. America being weak has always invited disaster.
“You” in his commentary are the other countries in the world – this is about U.S. foreign policy. I am not certain, as he is, that the Obama administration is non-interventionist. Obama may not go in everywhere or in the usual places, but he could well intervene in some places. If he doesn’t, well then, fine. It’s time the rest of the world sorted itself out and took care of itself.
Right now, we need the money here at home that has been taking care of all that.
A top secret National Security Agency program allows analysts to search with no prior authorization through vast databases containing emails, online chats and the browsing histories of millions of individuals, according to documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden. Dream Defenders Executive Director Philip Agnew has said he knew the group would have to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” during its now-13-day sit in at the Capitol. The college activists reached a new level of “uncomfortable” over the weekend – the group said Capitol police stopped food from coming into the building, leaving a group of about 50 protesters with little more than snack items and a few cups of water. The Department of Justice civil rights unit sent to Sanford, Florida in 2012 to mediate the anti-George Zimmerman protests has a history of putting racial advocacy ahead of its mandated duties, according to a former head of the unit. “At CRS headquarters, we (meaning I) regularly had to warn or take corrective action against career employees for acting as advocates instead of mediators,” Ondray Harris, the former director of the DOJ’s Community Relations Service (CRS), told The Daily Caller. CRS was the unit deployed to Sanford in 2012 to oversee anti-Zimmerman protests.
The family of the ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has accused the army of abducting him. In the charade that became the trial of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin, and in the continuing aftermath of the verdict, there was one thing the American people didn’t get from much of the national broadcast media: fairness. In the hours of continuous coverage that I monitored and recorded, I couldn’t believe the lack of balance in coverage.(Snip)Some news organizations seemed to resist the temptation of balanced reporting from the onset. What happened to investigating stories thoroughly? What happened to balancing a report with all points of view? And what happened to keeping agendas and
George Zimmerman, who has not been seen publicly since being acquitted in the murder of Trayvon Martin earlier this month, surfaced last week to rescue an unidentified driver trapped in an overturned truck in Florida, police said Monday. Sanford Police Department Capt. Jim McAuliffe told Fox News that Zimmerman, 29, was identified by a crash victim as the man who pulled him from the mangled vehicle last week. “George Zimmerman pulled me out,” firefighters were told by the unidentified driver, according to McAuliffe.
I have to admit, I’m stumped. Either something fairly important happened yesterday in Washington, or as readers of The Dallas Morning News might say, “I have no idea what you mean.” News reports, mostly from the right-of-center media, would indicate a 50-year IRS employee, recently retired as a tax specialist, testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Carter Hull, we’re told, said the inappropriate screening of tea party-related applications reached at least the office of the IRS chief counsel, one of two political appointees in the building. You remember the IRS scandal, right?
The brother of Trayvon Martin, whose shooting death by George Zimmerman gained international attention over the past year, is currently serving as an intern for Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., her office confirmed to NBC News. A Florida jury found Zimmerman not guilty of of 2nd degree murder and manslaughter on July 13. Zimmerman says he shot the teen in self defense. Martin’s brother Jahvaris Fulton attends Florida International University in Miami, Fla., (Snip) According to Wilson´s office, Fulton is also part of the 5000 Roll Models of Excellence Project.
In 2005 the Florida legislator enacted statute 776.032. “Immunity from criminal prosecution and civil action for justifiable use of force.” This immunity statute is often erroneously referred to as Florida’s Stand-Your-Ground (SYG) law, even by lawyers, judges, and law professors who ought to know better.(Snip)In fact, SYG is a different statute entirely, 776.013(3). Although many states have adopted some form of self-defense immunity law, Florida’s is remarkably broad in many respects. It provides not only immunity from both civil liability and criminal prosecution, but even from arrest in instances that lack probable cause
In the aftermath of the acquittal of George Zimmerman, Eric Holder, Al Sharpton and Ben Jealous of the NAACP are calling on the black community to rise up in national protest. Yet they know — and Barack Obama, whose silence speaks volumes, knows — nothing is going to happen. "Stand-Your-Ground" laws in Florida and other states are not going to be repealed. George Zimmerman is not going to be prosecuted for a federal "hate crime" in the death of Trayvon Martin. The result of all this ginned-up rage that has produced vandalism and violence
President Barack Obama’s half-brother, Malik Obama, had a close relationship with Libyan dictator Muammar Gadhafi that continued from the 1980s until the dictator’s death. A photograph obtained by the Daily Caller shows Malik smiling with Gadhafi. Photos of Gadhafi from the time period appear to place the photo somewhere between 1987-1990, around the same time as the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing and the Lockerbie bombing in 1988, for both of which Libya was responsible. Obama was a vocal supporter of the Libyan dictator and once interceded with his brother on Gadhafi’s behalf during the Libyan civil war,
WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Jay Carney dismissed a question Wednesday regarding the safety of George Zimmerman and his parents as “ridiculous.” Asked by The Daily Caller during the daily press briefing whether the president intends to take any action to protect the Zimmermans — in light of the many death threats the family has received — Carney laughed and said, “Well, I think I would refer you to Florida authorities. I’m not aware of that story. But, you know, the president has called for echoing the statements of Trayvon Martin’s family — for calm and reflection
There have been days since her son Ezekiel was born 11 months ago that Los Angeles mom Beth Capper has gone without food to keep up her supply. One friend was arrested for stealing some. It´s not drugs or alcohol or even baby formula that has put her in such a bind. It´s diapers. "There´s no way around buying them," said Capper, a 41-year-old single mother who doesn´t work because of a disability. Across the country, mothers like Capper are facing the same predicament. According to a report published Monday in the
America is in great shape energy-wise. We have more gas and oil reserves than ever before. Indeed, the United States could shortly become the world’s largest exporter of coal. President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that
Gotta figure her lead would be even bigger without Joe Miller in the field here. Her nomination for the taking? Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.
Arizona Sen. John McCain was the Republican Party´s 2008 presidential nominee and he still wants the keys to the Oval Office. But he is beginning to sound more like a fan of likely 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. "She´s a rock star," he said in a newly released interview. "She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world," he added in a reference to her work as secretary of State. FORNEY, Texas - George Zimmerman, the former Florida neighborhood watch leader cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was pulled over for speeding in North Texas on Sunday, CBS DFW reports. According to the station, Zimmerman was armed when officers pulled him over on Highway 80 in Forney, east of Dallas. Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,
Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.
In an interview on National Public Radio (NPR), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her new agenda for women will give mothers access to day care so they can “earn without carrying the burden of child care.” During the interview, aired on Weekend Edition Sunday, Pelosi spoke about her newly announced agenda, which is on her website, and is titled, “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families,” a plan that includes universal pre-school and access to day care for working women, and an increase in the minimum wage.
Karl Rove and more than one hundred Republican donors sent a letter to Republican members of Congress on Tuesday, urging them to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would include, among other provisions, granting "legal status" to illegal aliens who meet certain criteria. Anticipating that lawmakers will face resistance to the bill when they go home for the August recess, the letter marks the escalation of a campaign in which Republican leaders and donors are pressuring House Republicans to act on an immigration reform bill.
I never thought the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case deserved nearly the attention it got. But reasonable people can disagree about that. What strikes me as unconscionable, however, is the way the supposedly objective media have not only sensationalized a tragedy but at times appear to deliberately bend the facts to fit a desired story line. Maybe it started with the use of pictures of a younger Martin or with the sudden embrace of the term "white Hispanic" to describe Zimmerman in order to more easily paint him as a racist. NBC News was the most egregious offender
