Cocooning Is the Wrong
Solution for Conservatives

American Thinker, by James G. Wiles

Original Article

Posted By:magnante, 1/7/2013 9:19:20 AM

Should conservatives and persons of faith simply withdraw from the public square, live our lives, and quietly await the inevitable collapse of what the indispensible Walter Russell Mead calls Blue State America? Some people seem to think so. The question was first raised in 1996 in the journal First Things by the late Fr. John Neuhaus. In an essay called "The End of Democracy," Neuhaus talked about the possibility of civil disobedience by persons of faith as a response to unjust laws and court rulings. He was speaking of the Clinton Administration.

But.....when the left controls the market in the marketplace of ideas, when conservatives are shouted down and run out of most public forums, when the elections are stolen, when the memory hole swallows everything unfavorable to the left.....then civil discourse has no option but to become civil war.

We´ve lost the culture, that war is over. Standing in the rain and crying about it won´t change anything.

Time to head for Galt´s Gulch.

When Conservatives are not even wanted, except for their vote, in the GOP then it is time to step away. Conservatives are better than most at self-reliance so we can leave ya all be and not worry about tomorrow.

Yeah, let´s blow off Christ´s commandment that we fight for His values and accept society´s scorn as a badge of honor. It´s too hard and we´re a bunch of wimps when it comes to our faith. Let´s just take our ball and go home. Let evil win. I guess that´s the message among some posters?

Actually, I think this has already happened and that is why we are where we are now, in a second Obama term. I know people here won´t like this, but home schooling just allows liberalism to remain completely unchecked in the educational system. Conservatives need to stay in the schools system and change them - volunteering in class, going to school board meetings, reading the text books, and most importantly teaching your child how to deal with the liberal viewpoint and make their arguments against it. There were many freedom loving people who lived in the USSR and the countries they took over. Their principles didn´t help them.

Battles must be chosen carefully. Why sacrifice children on the alter of trying to reform public schools? How can you change the school system in Detroit, DC, LA, Chicago, etc.? The courts and unions have caused too much damage. Help develop alternatives for all. Internet schooling is an excellent alternative.

This bitter clinger with my guns and Bible will probably always vote Republican vs. the democrat alternative. I may not be enthusiastic about it, but will always be mindful that the alternative will be worse.

Democrats hold their noses and vote. Republicans sit on their butts and whine about staying home because their guy isn´t perfect, or worse, talk about a "protest vote" for the liberal competitor. Yeah, that´ll show the RHINOs. No, it only makes things worse for the next four years.

I won´t even get started on those who stated on these boards that they would not vote for Romney because he was a Mormon.

We are a diminished country for not voting for a decent man with a fine family and work ethic. I hope everyone enjoyed reading about Obama´s vacation, especially when the country had the temerity to ruin his fun by expectng him to lead our country.

America in Decline

When Barack Obama was running for president he promised, some say threatened, to fundamentally change America. The doubters now say he has fundamentally ruined America. Whichever way one views it, America is in serious decline. For a president that promised to reduce the national debt, Obama has added a massive seven trillion dollars to that debt. Under his presidency, America has accumulated as much new debt as it did in its first 227 years. He heads an Administration that produces food stamps, pries into people’s private lives, and sets government agencies against political opponents. Obama is following the guidebook of Saul Alinsky,

Jeff Bezos, the multi-billionaire (via Amazon.com) new owner of the Washington Post has got a messy situation on his hands, and unless he steps in, it appears that his new property is in danger of losing the prestige that was its primary asset. After a false hit piece on the Koch Brothers claiming they were the largest holder of Canadian oil sands land rights was devastatingly debunked by John Hinderaker of Powerline (see also: Washington Post busted!), the authors of the incorrect article responded conceding nothing, not apologizing or retracting their falsehoods, but only made their situation worse.

The Democrats’ game plan invoking Saul Alinsky’s rule # 13, “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it,” has already reached the stage of self-parody when it comes to demonizing the Koch brothers. It’s time to star mocking them ruthlessly. Case in point: The New York Times. Richard Baehr points out that in an article on a PAC backing Senate Democrats: The name Koch or Kochs comes up 14 times. And it’s not that long an article. Harry Reid’s characterization of them is of course included. But there is no attempt to identify to what degree Kochs support Americans for

Without a steady stream of water and electricity, child-care service providers who typically operate out of their own homes could go out of business. Yet, hundreds of Rhode Island residents – not to mention others across the country -- who offer these services must now pay union dues that can be used to support lobbying efforts aimed at securing anti-energy regulations at odds with their best interests. Help is on the way in the form of First Amendment legal challenges filed in other states that have worked their way up to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Adventures in Obamacareland, in which our protagonist is: - encouraged to lie and report that he did not have existing health insurance, making the number of uninsured look higher; - discovers new reasons to doubt the numbers of people reported as signing up for Obamacare; - and learns that one of the supposed reasons behind the (Un)Affordable Care Act was a total sham. (snip) Why would Obamacare “navigators” encourage applicants to misrepresent their existing insurance status when applying? A headline in the LA Times this past week answered the question. The feminist left may be crazy, but it is powerful. Witness what happened in San Francisco at a fast-growing company that is a web-based hosting service for software development named GitHub. (hat tip: Instapundit). Via readwrite.com: You might not immediately notice the latest change to come to GitHub unless you’re standing in its San Francisco headquarters and looking down at the floor. GitHub has removed the centerpiece of its faux Oval Office waiting room, a circular mat emblazoned with the phrase, “United Meritocracy of GitHub.”

Progressives pride themselves on their highly evolved psyches, their awe-inspiring good intentions and their admirable sense of right and wrong. Indeed, so sure are they that they are right, disagreement can only be an insult. Opposition triggers instant hatred, in a chorus chanted so loudly that nothing said, no evidence presented, will be heard or considered. Indeed, in order to cement a belief, whatever the left decides to believe magically becomes new science, granted an exemption from any sort of scientific process because the leftist has declared that a consensus of leftists makes something scientific. When we remember the Jewish children thrown alive into ditches by the Nazis and then think about the little girls outside Walmart selling cookies, it seems an offense to decency to suggest any comparison between the Bund Deutsche Madel (League of German Girls, or BDM) and the Girl Scouts. Nevertheless, both Nazism and post-1960s American feminism (neo-feminism in this essay) envision exclusionary, utopian socialist societies. Both indoctrinate girls from a young age to advance their visions. And there are parallels in structure, activities, and ethos. Changes to the Girl Scout Law reveal the core of the shifts from individually focused, morally

The goal also seems reasonable, since unruly young men (regardless of color) have long troubled society and cures abound thanks to eons of experience. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Obama’s putative cure is a modern-day Progressive nightmare. It will fail while

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney said Sunday that President Barack Obama is naive when it comes to Russia, has shown "faulty judgment" about Moscow´s intentions and could have done more to try to deter its annexation of Crimea. The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Obama didn´t have the foresight to anticipate Russia´s moves and should have been working earlier with allies to make clear the penalties that Russia would face if it moved into Ukraine. Romney did acknowledge that such steps may not have been enough though to hold back Russia President Vladimir Putin. "Had we communicated those things, there´s always

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,
