Obama to tap Hagel
for defense secretary

Washington Times, by Kristina Wong

Original Article

Posted By:Dreadnought, 1/6/2013 9:59:58 PM

President Obama will nominate former Sen. Chuck Hagel to replace Leon E. Panetta as secretary of defense as early as Monday, an administration source told The Washington Times on Sunday. Mr. Hagel, of Nebraska, who retired from the Senate in 2008, would be the second Republican to serve as the Obama administration’s defense secretary. Robert M. Gates, who left the post in July 2011, was a holdover from the George W. Bush administration. The nomination is likely to face resistance from Republican critics who say Mr. Hagel, 66, is not pro-Israel enough, based on remarks he has made

Any Republican who would willingly support the anti-American Obama agenda by serving in His Majesty´s administration deserves nothing but scorn and ridicule. But for the shame of betraying his country by hopping on the Obama bus, Hagel will become the darling of the Court Eunuchs. American enemies around the world, however, will be laughing at the whole charade, as they prepare.

The Obama administration warned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday not to react too aggressively to the fast-moving developments in Ukraine, where pro-Western demonstrators forced the nation’s Moscow-backed president from power over the weekend. National Security Adviser Susan E. Rice said the situation unfolding in Kiev “reflects the will of the Ukrainian people and the interests of the United States and Europe,” and that Russia would be making a “grave mistake” if it sends in military forces to try to reverse the developments — or to seize control of pro-Moscow eastern Ukraine. The Putin government has shown no outward signs

Editorial cartoons often aren´t pretty, to paraphrase Steve Martin´s observation about the perils of comedy. But a cartoon in the Opinion section of today´s New York Times is downright ugly. The cartoon, alluding to this year´s brutal winter, suggests U.S. Department of Commerce "Strategies for Dealing With the 2014 Icicle Surplus." Among them are using icicles as "locally sourced hydration devices," "temporary doorsteps," and "brainteasers for dogs." Then comes a suggestion that one immediately looks at again, in disgust and disbelief -- icicles can also be used as "self-destructing sabers for dispatching climate-change deniers."

It’s hard to understand exactly why Susan Rice is still refusing to admit fault about her lies about the Benghazi attack. When asked this morning on Meet the Press by David Gregory whether she had any regrets about appearing on four network news shows the Sunday after the 9/11/12 attacks that took the lives of four Americans and telling the nation that what happened was the result of a demonstration against a video, Rice said she had none: David, no. Because what I said to you that morning, and what I did every day since, was to share the best

Another interesting Second Amendment case is coming up before the courts, and yes… it’s from Florida again. Wells Fargo is facing a legal challenge from one of their bank managers who was fired for coming to work while carrying her weapon concealed. Ivette Ros grew up in a house where her father kept guns. For her, it was a natural step to get a concealed weapons permit and then to carry a 9 mm handgun. The 37-year-old Tampa resident is a single mother of three children and said she carries the gun for safety. “It’s just something about having it

President Obama is stepping up his efforts to coalesce and energize the Democratic base for the 2014 elections, backing off on issues where his positions might alienate the left, and more aggressively singling out Republicans as being responsible for the country’s problems. Voter turnout in midterm elections tends to be much lighter than it is in years when the country is picking a president, which means that it is crucial to maximize the enthusiasm of the party stalwarts who are most likely to show up at the polls. That helps explain why, in several sensitive policy areas, Obama recently has

The real mystery behind the FCC´s now abandoned "study" to police American newsrooms is why the mainstream media refused to raise holy hell over it. While Obama´s lapdogs refused to bark, it was conservative media who fought for newsroom independence and got the FCC to finally back down. Other than the media´s natural obedience to Obama, the fact that the fingerprints of left-wing billionaire George Soros have been found on the FCC study might also help to explain the media´s silence. KIEV, Ukraine—Government authority appeared to melt away Saturday, leaving protesters to take control of the capital´s center. President Viktor Yanukovych left the capital for a city in the country´s Russian-speaking east but allies said he had no intention of giving up power. Opposition leader Vitali Klitschko called on parliament to vote to oust Mr. Yanukovych and announce presidential elections in May, as police withdrew from the center of the capital. Mr. Yanukovych didn´t appear publicly Saturday, a day after signing an agreement to share power with opponents and call new elections. News agencies quoted an aide as saying he was

President Obama’s stimulus may have boosted the economy when it passed in 2009, but it’s now beginning to take a toll and will soon begin to leave the economy worse off than if it had never passed, according to a new report Friday by the Congressional Budget Office. Mr. Obama signed the stimulus into law five years ago this week, vowing it would help rescue the economy from its post-Wall Street collapse tailspin, and saying it would save millions of jobs. The CBO said it’s been successful at that, helping sustain between 700,000 and 3.6 million jobs at its peak

If what The Interpreter’s hearing is true, Yanukovych has left Kiev for the city of Kharkiv. Maybe that’s because he’s lost control of the capital or maybe, as the State Department claims, he’s gone to Kharkiv to, ahem, shore up support. Either way, though, there’s no scenario where the government simply abdicates and the opposition takes over. Russia won’t relinquish the country that easily. The University of Notre Dame must provide birth control to employees and students after a federal appeals court ruled Friday, a move the school says will force it to violate its religious beliefs. In a blow to religious colleges and universities across the country, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago denied Notre Dame´s request for an injunction to the ObamaCare birth control mandate that requires the school to provide coverage for contraception. The injunction would have given Notre Dame a temporary reprieve from the birth control mandate, as the Roman Catholic school challenges the rule in court.
