A new shot has been fired in the battle in Concord over the plastic water bottle ban, with opponents now vowing to repeal the controversial law — considered the first of its kind in the nation — that went into effect Tuesday. “People should have the freedom to buy a legal product in the town they live in,” contends Robin Garrison, who has spearheaded a group called Concord Residents for Consumer Choice that hopes to bring single-serve plastic water bottles under 1 liter back to stores in town. “It should not be outlawed.”
Everyone should have a minimum 2 week supply of food and water in the event of an emergency. I have cases of bottled water and food storage, and continue to add to it. In Concord, they can stand in line and wait for FEMA, I guess.
Did this 85 YO nut job provide copious photos of the "floating islands"? How can a LAW be passed without proof, because I guarantee you, there are NOT floating plastic islands. If this nut wants a cause, she can ban the floating debris caused by Nature..called a tsunami in Japan.
I think people are crazy to spend money on bottled water unless it´s an occasional true mineral water with dinner, but I sympathize with the old woman in a way. I doubt there are any "floating islands" of bottles, but people these days are slobs and just throw their bottles anywhere, and I assume they take forever to disintegrate. Maybe there should simply be a $1 deposit required on bottles of any kind, glass or plastic. That would help insure they wouldn´t turn up on the roadside or be left on the beach. When I was a little boy and could get a couple of cents back from A&P for bottles believe me I kept my neighborhood picked clean.
Ah, yes. Remove all consequences for uncivil behavior, then before long, the heavy hand of the law "must" fall on innocent and guilty alike. But it has the "advantage" of stoking the Leftists´ lust for control, control, control.
#9: Obama´s putting that aphorism into effect across the country. Well, the definition is a little different. "Live free" for Obama, the Left, and for the takers means "live on ´free´ money." And of course, implicitly, without ´free´ [read: our] money the takers die, having neither resources, skills, nor initiative.
When German Chancellor Angela Merkel celebrated the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Berlin in 2008, she could not have imagined that she was blessing the workplace for the largest and most effective gaggle of American spies anywhere outside of the United States. It seems straight out of a grade-B movie, but it has been happening for the past 11 years: The National Security Agency (NSA) has been using Mrs. Merkel as an instrument to spy on the president of the United States. We now know that the NSA has been listening to and recording her cellphone calls since 2002.
The National Restaurant Association (NRA) has been lobbying the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Congress to ensure that grocery and convenience stores are subjected to the same uniform menu labeling regulations that requires restaurants, including franchised chains with 20 or more locations, to post calorie and nutritional information for all of their products on in-store menu boards. Interestingly, the NRA lobbied government for this Obamacare legislation located within section 4205 of the Affordable Care Act. An NRA spokeswoman defended the organization’s advocacy for the regulation telling Breitbart News that too many localities across the nation were imposing a “patchwork”
On Wednesday, The New Yorker printed a piece from film critic David Denby on Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). Written about any Democrat, the piece surely would have been spiked for offensive quasi-racism. “When Ted Cruz lies, he appears to be praying,” Denby writes, before embarking upon a long and demeaning description of Cruz’s physical appearance: “Cruz has large ears; a straight nose with a fleshy tip, which shines in camera lights when he talks to reporters; straight black hair slicked back from his forehead like flattened licorice; thin lips; a long jaw with another knob of flesh at the base,
A House committee investigating the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of right-leaning groups has identified the IRS agent who leaked the confidential donor list of the National Organization for Marriage, a conservative organization that opposes gay marriage. NOM’s donor list, contained in a Form 990 Schedule B, which it is required by law to file with the IRS, was obtained in March 2012 by its chief political opponent, the Human Rights Campaign, and subsequently became the subject of several national news stories that centered on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s donation to the group. Though the House Ways and Means Committee,
In Wednesday’s New York Times, former reporter and columnist Maureen Dowd lamented how the “incalculably destructive Dick Cheney” is once again “ominously omnipresent” in media interviews. She loathed how “he still can’t emulate the respectful restraint of his former partner, George W. Bush. He grabs every opportunity to snarl at President Obama, who is still mopping up from the Bush-Cheney misrule.” How many times has Dowd complained that Bill Clinton couldn’t emulate the “respectful restraint” of either Bush? Lacking either restraint or respect, Dowd borrowed a page from Bill Maher and insisted that if Cheney had been medically disqualified from
It´s been nearly 14 months since the attack on the US facility in Benghazi, and the "most transparent Administration in history" still refuses to allow Congress or anyone else to interview survivors. Senator Lindsey Graham just announced, in total frustration, that he will block every Presidential nomination for any office until the survivors are allowed to appear before a Congressional committee. Now that is extreme. This means that, for the indefinite future, no more vacancies will be filled as they arise in federal courts or agencies, from "Assistant Deputy Under Secretary For xxx" jobs on up to Cabinet positions. Yet,
NEW YORK, October 30, 2013 — Today the wrong person is in the Congressional dock taking flack for yet another scandal. If this were a Republican-led Executive Branch, Valerie Jarrett would suffer mortal wounds to her political career for her apparent involvement in the abysmal failure to launch Obamacare, and so many other unsolved mysteries. Instead, automaton Kathleen Sebelius slings bureaucratese at us, deflecting attention from a fearsome reality that definitely bites. Like other false constructs (“shovel-ready jobs” and “leading from behind”), the mythic promise of Obamacare stands revealed now upon a foundation of lies. It turns out that regulations
Brian Shaffer lives in Maryland. He is one of hundreds of thousands who has lost insurance because of the Affordable Care Act. But when Shaffer tried to buy replacement insurance on the Maryland exchange he got a surprise, one which he described as "sheer stupidity." "I went to the Maryland Exchange, filled out the application, and at the end it told me I wasn´t eligible because I was not a U.S. citizen" Shaffer told WJLA-TV. Shaffer says he sent in his drivers license and birth certificate to the exchange by fax not once but twice. And still he has not
Glenn Kessler at the Washington Post does a nice job explaining why the President´s oft-made claim "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan" is not remotely true and why the administration´s current excuses are not believable. Kessler points out that even back in 2009 the GOP and the Associated Press argued that the President could not possibly keep the promise he had made about people holding on to insurance plans they liked. Nevertheless, the President ignored his critics and kept making the same simplistic promise over and over. Now that hundreds of thousands of cancellation notices have
NEW YORK- The New York City Council voted to raise the minimum age for buying tobacco to 21, the highest in the country, in hopes of reducing smoking among the city´s young adults. The council voted 35 to 10 on Wednesday to raise the age requirement from 18. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an anti-smoking crusader, was expected to sign the bill, which would become law 180 days later. Some 19,000 high school students under 18 currently smoke in the city and 80 percent of smokers start before age 21, according to the city´s health department. Youth smoking rates have hovered around
During Wednesday´s congressional testimony, a heated exchange occurred between Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius over one of the still-unexploded controversies in the ObamaCare law: the fact that ObamaCare´s so-called "robust" coverage is in reality your government forcing you to pay for coverage that includes expensive services millions will never need. Ellmers called Sebelius out specifically for forcing men to buy maternity coverage. [Video] Ellmers: You also brought up the issue that when you were in Kansas [as health Commissioner and governor] that you fought against discriminatory issues… As far as [ObamaCare´s] essential health
Vice President Joe Biden apologized Wednesday for the botched rollout of HealthCare.gov, calling the technical issues plaguing the website "inexcusable." "We apologize for that," Biden said during an interview with HLN. The vice president said President Obama "tried to get online" to check out the website glitches, but said he personally had not because "it was clear that I wasn´t getting online." He also depicted the president as diligent in the weeks leading up to the debut of the website. "We were under the impression that it was ready to go," Biden said. We had the president to his credit almost seven
From Florida to California, consumers are getting notices their health plans are cancelled. They were promised they could keep their plan if they liked it. That was a lie. They’ve been duped and dropped. The liar is none other than the President of the United States. On June 15, 2009, President Obama told a town hall meeting that “No matter how we reform healthcare, we will keep this promise…. if you like your healthcare plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what.”
President Barack Obama is facing fresh attacks for his pledge that Americans who like their current healthcare plans can keep them under Obamacare, as reports pile up of thousands of Americans facing cancellation notices. Accusations that the pledge was misleading are potentially a deeper threat to Obama than the website glitches that have plagued Healthcare.gov since its October 1 launch and allowed only a trickle of people to sign up on new federal insurance exchanges. Obama has downplayed the problems with the website, saying it´s like a cash register not working, and has stressed that the underlying product of the
Meghan McCain said she’s already defied the odds by not disappearing from the public stage after her father’s failed 2008 presidential campaign, and that part of the reason is some regard her as the new face of the Republican Party. “People project onto me what they want me to be,” said Ms. McCain, the daughter of Arizona Sen. John McCain, in Politico. “If they want me to be this spoiled, crass senator’s daughter, then they will create that and say that to be on Twitter and write articles on me.” Others, meanwhile, “think I’m the second coming of the new
"There´s a mental health problem in Congress," says actor and liberal activist Sean Penn. The president could solve the problem "by committing them by executive order," Penn told CNN´s Piers Morgan Monday night. Asked if Penn would have "people like Ted Cruz" committed, Penn said, "He is my American brother. I won´t -- I think we should take care of him, he is in, he´s the trouble." "Well, actually have him committed," Morgan followed up. "Yeah, I think it´s a good idea," Penn said. Penn, in a rambling way, also identified a "lack of education" as a "huge problem that we´re dealing with
It was a spasm of violence that stunned residents: some 200 black youths raising hell - what police called a full-blown riot - in Austin, Texas. Angry black youths inexplicably converged by the Highland Mall, near an iconic haunted house attraction, and walked atop parked cars, fought among themselves, and hurled rocks at some 30 arriving police officers.(snip)In their reporting on the riot, Austin´s media outlets followed a widely accepted rule of mainstream journalism today: they failed to mention that the rioters were black. Yet many Austin residents surmised as much -- and their suspicions were confirmed when mug shots were
In sad news from the land of McCain, “Raising McCain” host and McCain family scion Meghan McCain said in an interview with ABC and Yahoo News that her father, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), was “frustrated” and “depressed” by the Tea Party. Meghan termed the Tea Party the “hyper-conservative wing.” She said, “We’re both frustrated with the idea that only the hyper-conservative wing of the party is going to represent the masses.” The last time dad was this depressed, Meghan reported, was after he lost the presidency to then-Senator Barack Obama. Meghan said, “He is so depressed. He is so downtrodden. The way
On Monday, NBC News reported that President Obama’s administration knew for three years that Americans would lose their current insurance under Obamacare. The story quickly became the lead at the Drudge Report, making it the hottest political story on the Internet immediately. For several hours, there was no problem. Then, late at night, the story was pulled, the link was changed thereby breaking the Drudge link, and stealth edits were made to the piece. In particular, one key paragraph met the cutting room floor: None of this should come as a shock to the Obama administration. The law states that
It’s just one tweet, but the sheer mendacity requires its own post. With the media finally in “now it can be told” mode since Obamacare passed and President Obama was reelected, pretty much everyone is admitting what all of us knew four years ago— that no, not everyone would be able to keep their plans if they liked their plans. And, yes, the Obama administration knew it just as sure as its critics did. It was a lie and an obvious one, but the administration, much of the media, and Obamacare supporters happily acted as if it were true and happily
Ronan Farrow is already in MSNBC mid-season form. Farrow, the son of actress Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, is set to debut his own MSNBC talk show early next year. His latest political comments, though, find him boosting the image of the Clintons in a way that even the far-left network might not embrace. They´re nimble politicians. Also I think that they represent a style of honesty that the public craves right now. And that´s reflected in the numbers. I think people are tired of the old school politicking, and when a politician comes out and says, “Actually, I changed my
President Barack Obama’s job approval has dropped to an all-time low, according to a new poll released Wednesday. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey shows that a mere 42 percent of Americans approve of Obama’s job performance, down five points from a poll conducted in early October. The president’s disapproval rating stands at 51 percent, tying an all-time high for Obama. In all, 41 percent of respondents say they have a less favorable opinion of the president since the 16 day government shutdown, compared to 21 percent who say they have a more favorable view since the shutdown. The Affordable Care Act
Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, is telling a Senate panel Tuesday that states must clarify their "stand your ground" self-defense laws. The laws, adopted in some form by at least 22 states, generally cancel a person´s duty to retreat in the face of a serious physical threat. But the 2012 shooting of Fulton´s unarmed son, Trayvon Martin, 17, and the acquittal of George Zimmerman this year provided evidence that "stand your ground" laws can be confusing and applied inconsistently, she said. "By being unclear in when and how it is applied, stand your ground in its current form is far
Conservatives are expressing shock and outrage that the Obama administration knew that many people in the individual insurance market would not be able to keep their plans once the Affordable Care Act took effect. Such shock is not surprising; overblown outrage is the stock and trade of conservative politics these days. But here´s what conservatives won´t tell you, lest it undermine their theatrics: Many insurance plans are shutting down because they don´t meet the higher bar of quality benefits required under Obamacare, and of those people who lose access to their plans, many will pay less and all will have better
