Obama’s inaugural committee on the
receiving end of transparency complaints

Hot Air, by Erika Johnsen

In the run-up to his 2009 inauguration, President Obama’s inaugural committee made much ado about the fact that they would not be accepting any donations from lobbyists or corporations, nor individual donations in excess of $50,000 — and there was really no reason that they would have needed them, anyway. The Hopenchangey spirit carried over from 2008 was enough to fund all of the balls, concerts, parties, and other pomp surrounding the inauguration the first time around, but this year, the enthusiasm level is sufficiently tarnished that they decided to reverse course on that much-vaunted corporate ban

A new poll puts Obama’s false promise, “if you like your healthcare plan you can keep it,” in perspective: 64% of Americans say ObamaCare would’ve never passed if Americans had known the truth in 2009. Moreover, the Fox news poll found the sentiment to be spread across all party lines, with 74% of Republicans, 68% of Independents and 54% of Democrats saying Obama’s unpopular healthcare program would never have passed. Even more troubling, 56% of Americans said ObamaCare was more about the government seizing control of citizens’ lives, versus just 40% who felt Obama’s plan was about improving healthcare. Perhaps the most troubling

Karl Rove Strikes Down Dem Governor

Karl Rove called out former Governor Ted Strickland (D., Ohio) for his hypocritical attacks on Chris Christie’s competence on Fox News Sunday. Strickland alleged Christie was incompetent because he was unaware some of his subordinates ordered the GWB bridge closing. Rove countered with a story from the 2008 election cycle revealing one of Strickland’s own high ranking officials inappropriately accessed damaging information about Joe the Plumber which was eventually leaked, all allegedly without the former Ohio governor’s knowledge. Strickland denied that his appointee was ever directed to leak that information for political purposes, but as Rove pointed out the record suggests otherwise: KARL ROVE:

Debunking the myth of Kitty Genovese

At 3:15 on the morning of March 13, 1964, a 28-year-old bar manager named Kitty Genovese drove her red Fiat into the parking lot of the LIRR station by her Kew Gardens home. As she walked home — she was only about “a hundred paces away” from the apartment she shared with her girlfriend, Mary Ann Zielonko — she heard a man’s footsteps close behind her. She ran, but the man, Winston Moseley, was too quick. He caught her, slammed her to the ground and stabbed her twice in the back. She screamed twice, once yelling, “Oh, God! I’ve been stabbed!” Across

Romney: Christie´s presidential

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said Friday that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie handled the scandal over lane closures on the George Washington bridge “in a very effective way” and that the controversy would not hurt his presidential ambitions. “A member of his administration did something that he was unaware of and that he found reprehensible,” Romney told the Washington Post. “He faced the American people for two hours, took their questions. He dismissed people who were responsible. He took personal responsibility. That’s what a leader does.” The former Massachusetts governor said he´d emailed Christie since news of the scandal broke

Cornyn won’t pay a price for defying

WASHINGTON — Politics is sometimes the art of choosing the lesser of evils. For Sen. John Cornyn and other GOP leaders, it was better to let Democrats raise the debt ceiling last week than to dig in and risk a federal default. But tamping down a filibuster from Sen. Ted Cruz invited the wrath of the tea party. We’ll find out soon enough whether Cornyn pays a price — or, possibly, emerges stronger and more independent after the March 4 primary.(Snip)To many Republicans, the fight Cruz had picked was the wrong one. Default would have dire implications for the world economy. Even toying

AUSTIN, Tex. — Luci Baines Johnson leaned forward in her father’s private suite at the L.B.J. Presidential Library, her voice breaking as she recounted the “agony of Vietnam” that engulfed Lyndon Baines Johnson and the pain she feels to this day of witnessing his presidency judged through the prism of a failed war. “Nobody wanted that war less than Lyndon Johnson,” said Ms. Johnson, 66, who is the president’s younger daughter. “No matter how hard he tried, he didn’t seem to be able to get out of that quagmire. Not only did he not get out of it in his lifetime,

SAN ANTONIO — Sen. Wendy Davis said Thursday that she supports same-sex marriage and that Attorney General Greg Abbott, her presumed general-election opponent in the race for governor, should stop defending the state´s ban. “It´s my strong belief that when people love each other and are desirous of creating a committed relationship with each other that they should be allowed to marry, regardless of their sexual orientation,” Davis told the Express-News editorial board. SOCHI, Russia – T.J. Oshie added his name to the list of American Olympic heroes with a nerveless shootout performance that lifted the United States men’s ice hockey team to a heart-stopping 3-2 win over Russia at the Sochi Winter Games on Saturday. In a heavyweight clash that evoked memories of the 1980 Olympics ‘Miracle on Ice’ when a group of American college players upset the former-Soviet Union’s ‘Big Red Machine’, Oshie delivered the knockout punch scoring on four of his six attempts, including the winner, in an epic shootout to deny Russia its Lake Placid revenge. On Presidents Day, we honor those men who helped start and guide our nation. Their leadership got us through the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Great Depression, two world wars and the Cold War. Until recently, they all seemed to understand what makes America exceptional. But now, we’re not in Kansas anymore. You know that clever ad by a satellite-dish company that shows what happens to a man who gets bored waiting for the cable guy? As with the children’s books that began with “If You Give a Mouse a Muffin,” the man endures a series of mishaps, the final one showing

Starbucks isn´t an Olympic sponsor and is therefore forbidden to have an official presence here. The nearest Starbucks is about 350 miles away by car in a little-known city called Rostov-on-Don. The only branded coffee player is supposed to be McDonald´s Corp. , which has been gaining grounds globally with its McCafé outlets. First Lady Michelle Obama apparently halted private-jet traffic at Aspen airport as she landed for a weekend of skiing while President Obama headed to California. Michelle, with her daughters, Sasha and Malia, was expected to touch down in Aspen Friday to spend Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day weekend away from her husband, who was meeting late Friday with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Mrs. Obama’s arrival amid tight security was expected to delay the arrival of other wealthy vacationers on private jets at the Colorado ski resort. Jonathan Turley, faithful Obama supporter and liberal professor of constitutional law at Sandra Fluke´s alma mater, Georgetown University Law School, is sounding the alarm that "a system in which a single individual is allowed to rewrite legislation or ignore legislation is a system that borders on authoritarianism." Question for Mr. Turley: what kind of constitutional law professor votes for an inexperienced community organizer who believes that the U.S. Constitution is "fundamentally flawed" in the first place?

A growing group of Ted Cruz’s Republican Senate colleagues are infuriated with his tactics. So frustrated was Arizona Senator John McCain with the latest, forcing fellow Republicans to take a politically risky vote on lifting the debt ceiling, that yesterday he tweeted a Wall Street Journal editorial accusing the Texas lawmaker of instigating “needless drama that helps to explain why Republicans remain a minority.” (Snip)Cruz’s insistence Feb. 12 on a 60-vote threshold to advance legislation lifting the nation’s borrowing cap foiled his party leadership’s plan to let the measure move forward with only Democratic votes.

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. — The UAW suffered a devastating defeat at Volkswagen’s plant here as workers rejected union representation by a 712-626 margin. The defeat, which came despite Volkswagen’s neutrality, tarnishes UAW President Bob King’s legacy and could make it next to impossible for the union to extend its reach beyond domestic automakers.
“While we certainly would have liked a victory for workers here, we deeply respect the Volkswagen Global Group Works Council, Volkswagen management and (German union) IG Metall for doing their best to create a free and open atmosphere for workers to exercise their basic human right to form a union,” King said in a statement.

Washington Republicans on Sunday restated their argument that President Obama has violated the Constitution by using executive orders to alter the Affordable Care Act, but acknowledged they likely have no recourse or ability to stop another incident. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, told “Fox News Sunday” that congressional Republicans think the president abused the government’s separation of powers by using the executive orders to sidestep Congress and delay the law’s employer mandate. “The president knows this is wrong.” - Sen. RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — It’s a day of golf in Southern California for President Barack Obama while the nation’s capital recovers from this week’s snowfall. The White House says Obama teed off Saturday at the nine-hole course at the Sunnylands retreat in Rancho Mirage with childhood friends Bobby Titcomb, Greg Orme and Michael Ramos. Obama is spending the weekend at the estate. It used to be the winter home of the late billionaire philanthropists Walter and Leonore Annenberg. On Friday night, Obama and Jordan’s King Abdullah II met at Sunnylands for talks largely focused on Syria.

Americans watching the Affordable Care Act’s implementation are witnessing a government policy debacle that is as large as any in memory. It is hard to imagine a more vivid demonstration of the ruinous consequences of government stepping into a market in which it doesn’t belong. And, sadly, what we are seeing now is only the beginning of the policy’s failure. In its most updated assessment of the ACA, the government’s own Congressional Budget Office caught the Democrats flat-footed by projecting that the law is severely flawed on a number of fronts, matching in many ways what the ACA opponents clearly

Once again, bitter feelings are being cast in the direction of Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. With the House passing the “clean” debt ceiling bill and sending it to the Democratic-controlled Senate, it was clear that this particular bill was going to be passed and sent to the president for his signature. But Cruz didn´t want to let Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., off the hook and give President Obama a blank check to once again increase the debt ceiling as we are drowning in red ink. He didn't want Republicans to simply vote against the bill, hiding behind the Democrat majority who were sure to pass it.
