The U.S. has been hit with a particularly aggressive early flu season this year with widespread reports of the illness across the country, hospitalizing 2,257 people and leaving 18 children dead before the end of 2012. And health officials say the numbers haven´t even peaked yet. [Snip] ´It’s about five weeks ahead of the average flu season,´ said Lyn Finelli, lead of the surveillance and response team that monitors influenza for the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. ´We haven’t seen such an early season since 2003 to 2004.´
I ordered 300 doses for several Doctors but didn´t get my shot...and got the Flu. Two weeks of fever, terrible cough, malaise, lost voice sore throat. The full gamut. Lasted nearly a month. Two MORE strains are out there. as soon as I´m asymptomatic I get the shot.
I call BS. I heard last night that the strain that is getting all you townies isn´t in the flu shot. My SIL is a RN and she said never, never get that flu shot, it is a huge scam. The one year my hubby and I got one, was the only time I have had the flu in 20 years. Huge scam, I will never get another one.
I´ve had it twice. Once at Halloween and then over Christmas school break. I am finally feeling better but still have lingering "cold" symptoms. High fever (103) uncontrollable chills, cough, head full of gunk, lost voice, sore throat, body aches and oh so tired. The problem with the flu shot is that it is just an educated guess. No one really know what formula will work and which flu strain you will be exposed to. It´s hit or miss at best but to be safe I guess you should get one. When I am truly feeling better I guess I will go down to CVS and get a shot. I had a niece who died from swine flu three years ago so don´t laugh and think you might not be affected. You never know.
I am a nurse practitioner and never get a flu shot because (as I was telling everyone), I am immune to everything. However, I did get sick this year, though not super sick. I caught it from my husband, who did get the flu shot. He was fairly sick for a day or two and a little sick for about 3 additional days.
Symptoms are not really typical with fever and body aches being less prominent than cough and fatigue.
I got the shot. Never been so sick in my life. I am pregnant and this crud turned into pneumonia on me since in the beginning the nurse practicioners I went to insisted I took nothing but Tylenol (even though I told them I am asthmatic).
I thought a couple times I was in the clear and then it got so much worse (usually at night).
I am only now starting to get to 100%.
Don´t know what to say other than the shot didn´t work for me.
Whooping Cough has been making the rounds too. My SIL is a pediatric nurse (oncology); she also supervises a field course for a college. She wasdesperately sick - out of work for 6 weeks. She didn´t get the antibiotics in time. One of my nephews, living in a college dorm, also got it but not quite as bad. The 2 youngest kids and my brother took the antibiotics as a prophylactic and they were ok.
I have a bias against the flu shots, too. But 2 years ago I did get sick - and then ended up in the hospital with Bell´s Palsy shortly after. I am very torn about whether or not to get vaccinated as I am in schools.
According to http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/summary.htm, two A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) are covered by the shot. 69% of the B strain cases seen this year are covered by the shot; 31% aren´t.
This means that the people getting the flu either didn´t get the shot (and have caught either an A or B strain), got the shot but caught the uncovered B strain...or...(as two doctors have told me this week) caught a mutation of one of the A strains.
My son ~must~ get the flu shot because he is extremely vulnerable to flu complications. He´s had the shot for 15 years and gotten the flu four times (hospitalized once, another time he was so sick they thought he had cancer). The rest of us get the shot to help shield him. None of us has gotten the flu in all these years (knock on wood). At least two of the four times he´s had the flu, he caught strains not covered in that year´s shot...it may be that that was the case all four times (I just can´t remember!).
Bottom line - the flu shot does reduce your risk of getting the flu. You may react to the flu shot with flu-like symptoms for several days (I did once and my son has twice), but that is NOT the flu. Also, I am highly skeptical of people who claim to have the flu but did not get tested to confirm it. Unless you´ve had the nose swab done, you don´t know that you have the flu - it could be any number of viruses. Wash you hands, stay healthy, and stay away from my boy!
Heading into my second week with this crap, not pretty

I began taking the flu shot when I was 50. I´ve had it once I began the shots, and that was because I worked in retail then. I felt like death. I have the shot because I am around a lot of college students and because I take care of my 91 year old father. I do not want him to get the flu - it would probably kill him.
Well, I usually get the flu shot, and this year I did not. I got the flu the day after Christmas; it lasted at least five days, achiness, chest cough, tiredness. My brother in NYC has been very sick with the flu. But I also heard that this year´s flu vaccine would not be effective against this current strain of flu.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - State Sen. Lee Bright has brought his campaign website online as he considers a Republican primary challenge against U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham next year. The website asks people to sign up for Bright’s newsletter, promising to send them a video announcement the moment he decides to run against Graham. It includes the slogan: “Bright. For Liberty. For Senate.” The Roebuck lawmaker says he is waiting to see how the field shapes up before making his formal announcement. Bright was elected to the Senate in 2008. Two other candidates are already in the race.
Whatever plot the US eavesdroppers overheard the top two al-Qaeda leaders discussing clearly rattled the US intelligence community so badly that Washington shut 19 of its diplomatic missions around the Middle East, Asia and Africa. In the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, where the threat of attack is considered greatest, the UK, France and Germany have also shut their embassies. The British embassy has emptied completely, with all remaining British staff leaving the country on Tuesday, while the US air force flew out American personnel. So just what is it about al-Qaeda´s branch in Yemen that triggers such warning bells in Washington?
An interesting spot by Political Scrapbook that says a lot about the politics of the English Defence League. This morning Tommy Robinson (or Stephen Yaxley-Lennon or Andrew McCaster or Flimbo the Amazing Clown or whatever his name really is) tweeted a link complaining about mass immigration under Labour--and it turns out that the link was to an anti-Semitic website. It´s called The Traitor Within (never a good sign) and after detailing New Labour´s nefarious plan to flood the country with good plumbers, it concludes with a paragraph claiming that the ministers involved in its immigration policy "are all Jewish".
Four Al-Qaeda militants have reportedly been killed in a US drone attack in Yemen. It comes as America has warned all ´non-essential´ US citizens to evacuate Yemen immediately amid fears of a terrorist attack. The UK Foreign office has also withdrawn embassy staff from the country and is advising against all travel there. The U.S. has pummeled terror leaders in Yemen with targeted drone strikes. Yemeni security officials have today said a suspected U.S. drone killed the four alleged Al Qaeda members in a volatile eastern province of the country. The drone fired a missile at a car carrying
Somewhere down there, Richard Nixon must be rubbing his hands with glee. The Graham family have been forced to sell The Washington Post--the liberal newspaper that helped bring down Tricky Dick with its coverage of the Watergate burglary. Nixon hated the Post for the not unreasonable reason that it hated him. It wasn´t just the pursuit of Watergate that irritated, but the climate that the daily helped create of liberal disdain for his presidency--its insistence that anyone with a fully functioning heart and brain voted Democrat. That attitude wouldn´t have mattered if print didn´t enjoy such a monopoly over the
US intelligence picked up on messages in which Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden´s successor, ordered Nasser al-Wuhayshi, the head of its Yemen branch, to carry out an attack. The messages represent rare coordination between al-Qaeda´s core leadership, which is in hiding in Pakistan, and al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the terror group´s most dangerous offshoot. In response the US has ordered the unprecedented closure of embassies in 19 countries across the Middle East and Africa until at least Saturday. Britain, Germany, France and Holland have also closed their embassies in Sana´a, the Yemeni capital, until later in the week.
President Obama has replaced Republican Mitt Romney as the most popular target for comedians, a study has revealed. [Snip] Obama was the target of 288 gags made by Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon, Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Kimmel, according to an analysis by the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University. The second most joked-about individual was New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, at 120. But as the study was conducted before Weiner´s second sexting scandal had come to light, the number of jokes aimed at him is expected to have jumped dramatically
Anthony Weiner´s sexting partner has stripped down for the public as she filmed a video for a major porn distributor. Sydney Leathers poses provocatively in a five-minute clip of the video, and talks about her virtual relationship with the disgraced congressman. ´He would always compliment me on my breasts and my butt and my feet, and he would always tell me I was the perfect height to wear heels,´ the 23-year-old said. In the video, created by porn production company Vivid, Leathers is seen disrobing from various lingerie sets and displaying the assets that many feel cost Weiner his
A Texas man dramatically turned the tables on two bank robbery suspects who had abducted him and his wife on Thursday, by pulling a gun on the duo and shooting them both, killing one. According to KHOU, the unnamed couple were targeted by brothers Jordan, 20, and Preston Kutach, 21, who knew that the woman worked at the First National Bank of Eagle Lake in Columbus, near Houston. The suspects kidnapped the couple at gunpoint in their own home, then made them drive to the bank where they forced the woman to withdraw cash. But then her husband struck back
Iran´s new president Hasan Rouhani has accused the United States of seeking an excuse to confront the country over its nuclear programme. The new leader reportedly made the claim during a meeting with North Korean official Kim Yong Nam, who is in the Iranian capital Tehran to see Mr Rouhani´s inauguration. According to Iranian state TV, the president said: ´We believe the United States and the Westerners are seeking an excuse to confront the countries that they do not consider friends.´ The West suspects Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons programme, a charge which Iran denies.
The U.S. State Department has extended the closure orders for 19 embassies and consulates across the Middle East and Africa for a week--amid fears of a ´strategically significant´ terrorist attack against Western interests. Officials are offering few details about the threat from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the arm of the terrorist organization that is based in Yemen, but at least one report indicates it could involve a terrorist attack mounted by people with explosives surgically-implanted inside them--bombs capable of passing undetected through airport security. On Sunday, Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said ´the chatter´ intercepted by
Almost unnoticed, Iraq is toppling into civil war, yet again. Here are a few sentences plucked at random from an Al Jazeera article published this Saturday: “Bombings and shootings across Iraq have killed at least 19 people, including an ambush that targeted a convoy carrying a top military commander, authorities said … Gunmen also broke into the house of a former fighter of an anti-al-Qaeda group known as Sahwa, killing the man´s wife and two daughters near the city of Baqouba [Snip] You get the picture. It is almost entirely depressing, as there is apparently nothing we can do
In 2008 and then again in 2012, after retired four-star General Colin Powell endorsed and then voted for Barack Obama, the former Secretary of State´s sanity was already in question. At least now, after having his email account hacked by high-level security-breacher Guccifer, Colin Powell´s besmirching of the Republican Party´s "shift to the right" and "identity crisis" finally makes sense. It seems that for years the mannerly and always professional Colin Powell has been cyber-comporting with a 46-year-old Romanian European Parliament member, Social Democrat, and past spokesperson for Romanian president Ion Iliescu named Corina Cretu
Conservatives have for years attempted to put our finger upon precisely why Barack Obama strikes us as queer in precisely the way he does. There is an alienness about him, which in the fever swamps is expressed in all that ridiculous Kenyan-Muslim hokum, but his citizen-of-the-world shtick is strictly sophomore year — the great globalist does not even speak a foreign language. Obama has been called many things — radical, socialist — labels that may have him dead to rights at the phylum level but not down at his genus or species. His social circle includes
For nearly a year, we have had no answer to why the administration lied about Benghazi — why it told the world, not to mention the parents of our murdered SEALs at the funeral of their sons, that the cause of that fatal conflagration was an anti-Islamic video no one saw, when the various arms of our executive branch (White House, State and intelligence) already knew, or strongly suspected, it was a terror attack orchestrated by al-Qaeda affiliates. You only have to read the now infamous talking points to know that. That this lie was deeply immoral is obvious.
Today, across Africa, Araby and Asia, from Nouakchott to Dhaka, the diplomatic facilities of the United States are closed. There’s a Tsarnaev out there, somewhere – could be the Mahgreb, the Levant, the Horn of Africa, the Indian sub-continent – who knows? So, as Richard Fernandez writes, “Shelter in place, this time globally.” Maybe it will work. Maybe by the end of the day there will be, unlike Benghazi a year on, men in custody. But if not? Daniel Pipes: Don’t know about you, but I find this pre-emptive cringing unworthy of a great country, even humiliating.
He thought he was a woman trapped in a man’s body — but it turns out he’s “just another boring straight guy.” ABC News editor Don Ennis strolled into the newsroom in May wearing a little black dress and an auburn wig and announced he was transgender and splitting from his wife. He wanted to be called Dawn. But now he says he suffered from a two-day bout of amnesia that has made him realize he wants to live his life again as Don. “I accused my wife of playing some kind of cruel joke, dressing
Not only should President Obama cancel a bilateral summit with "schoolyard bully" Russian President Vladimir Putin, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Sunday on "Face the Nation," but considering the country granted asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, U.S. allies should try to move next month´s G-20 gathering from St. Petersburg. "President Putin´s behaving like a schoolyard bully, and in my experience, I´ve learned, unless you stand up to that bully, they ask for more and more and more," Schumer said. "He´s always going out of his way, President Putin is, to seem to poke us in
In an interview for The Guardian Weekend magazine, actor Matt Damon recently weighed in with his thoughts on how President Barack Obama has handled the scandals that have engulfed his administration since the spring. Damon, a vocal supporter of the president since his 2008 campaign for national office, said that Obama is overcompensating for his lack of military background with his tough response to controversies like how the government is responding to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The actor said that Obama is allowing himself to “get bullied” and is acting as though is “manhood”
The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus threatened to pull the group’s partnership with NBC and CNN for 2016 GOP presidential primary debates if the networks moved ahead with plans to air films on Hillary Clinton. “If they have not agreed to pull this programming prior to the start of the RNC’s Summer Meeting on August 14, I will seek a binding vote stating that the RNC will neither partner with these networks in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates they sponsor,” Preibus said in a statement. In individual letters to CNN President Jeff Zucker and NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt,
Oprah Winfrey on Monday said the killings of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are the "same thing." This transpired during an interview with The Grio that aired on NBC´s Today show. OPRAH WINFREY: It´s so easy during this time: Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin parallel to Emmett Till, let me just tell you. In my mind, same thing. But you can, you can get stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we´ve come. Really? Martin and Till are the same thing?
Michelle Obama took to Twitter on Sunday to send her husband an affectionate birthday message -- and a gentle ribbing about the US President´s graying hair. "Happy birthday, Barack! Your hair´s a little grayer, but I love you more than ever," Michelle Obama wrote on her official twitter account, @FLOTUS. The message was accompanied by an undated black and white photo of the Obamas as a young couple relaxing on a sofa. Barack Obama is spending his 52nd birthday weekend at Camp David, the rural Maryland retreat made available to US Presidents. He was to return
In an exclusive interview for The Grio, NBCUniversal’s African-American news and opinion website, Oprah Winfrey weighed in with her unvarnished thoughts on the killing of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Winfrey said that, in her mind, Martin’s murder and that of Emmett Till in 1955 – whose killers were also acquitted – were the “same thing.” However, she added that it is important to keep in mind how much race relations in America have progressed over the last half-century. In a clip of the interview which aired on NBC’s Today, Oprah told The Grio’s Chris
