Stalling of Storm Aid Makes
Northeast Republicans Furious

New York Times, by Raymond Hernandez

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 1/3/2013 9:11:17 AM

WASHINGTON — Northeastern Republicans, long outnumbered and overshadowed in their own party nationally, erupted in fury on Wednesday after the Republican-controlled House of Representatives blocked a measure that sought to provide billions of dollars in aid to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other states pummeled by Hurricane Sandy. The depth of the anger was extraordinary and exceedingly personal, with one Republican after another venting their outrage at one man in particular, Speaker John A. Boehner, Republican of Ohio, who quietly moved to keep the bill from coming to the floor early Wednesday

What a shame that Christie, King, etc..weren´t clever enough to turn this into a CRISIS ..never waste a crisis somebody said? s/
This could have been a blame Obama, blame the democrats blame wasteful pork spending moment.
Instead, they chose to eat their own.

Both King and Christie are disgusting. So congress should pass a bill that is loaded with pork. I´m sick and tired of my tax dollars going to fund pet projects that are not related to the original request. Schumer should also shut up.....

It gives them a taste of the way many Americans view what most of those clowns do most of the time. It is abundantly clear, Congress Critters are there for themselves, not J. Q. Public.

#3 & #5 are exactly right! Why pass a bill loaded with so much pork unrelated to the storm should have been the focus of any fury. We will never solve the spending problem with governors and politicians like Christy, King Schumer who could care less about all the non storm pork in the bill as long as they get what they want. We have to change the thinking that my Governor, Senator or Representative brings home the "bacon" because there is no bacon left! Until that happens trillion dollar deficits will just continue leading to a disastrous collapse like Greece.

Where is the outrage over the promise not kept by president obama? He was there, with Christie, vowing to have this taken care of in an instant? Enough of bashing Boehner....the press loves attacking Republicans. And, our side seems to love joining the chorus.

This should be about the president, he DID NOT lead the effort as he promised.

It doesn´t take much to get republican pigs snorting and slopping back at the public trough alongside their democrat brothers and sisters.

This is exactly what they did the full eight years of the Bush administration and this is exactly what they will do if they ever gain the presidency and congressional majorities again.

Showing once again there really is only one political philosophy among the republicans and democrats. Their only real disagreement is who gets to steal the lions´ share of the loot.

Deserved or not, the northeast would have had their Sandy relief had Congress not filled the bill full of unnecessary pork. It`s always about the pork. This type of behavior is no different than Obama `never letting a crisis go to waste`. Every disaster that befalls this nation seems to be an opportunity for Congress to steal money from the private sector for pet projects.

#´s 3, 5 & 7 have it correct. Why should the Republicans approve a bill that has $8 billion for Sandy restoration and $52 billion to secure more votes for liberal democRATs? Too bad that the N.E. Republicans are too stupid to see the whole picture and what the democRATs are doing to the United States.

Reply 15 - Posted by: attymitch, 1/3/2013 11:49:16 AM     (No. 9096555)

And yet I feel obliged to withhold my approval of the plan as proposed by this bill, to indulge a benevolent and charitable sentiment through the appropriation of public funds for that purpose.

I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. A prevalent tendency to disregard the limited mission of this power and duty should, I think, be steadfastly resisted, to the end that the lesson should be constantly enforced that, though the people support the government, the government should not support the people.

The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood.---Grover Cleveland, 1887.

It is not up to the Federal government to repair everything after a natural disaster. That is why we have insurance.

Complaining about the complainers can´t undo the damage. Boehner blew it. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of tone-deaf, ham-fisted political bumbling. Saying that people should´t be reacting the way they are to it is like standing in the rain saying it shouldn´t be raining. Maybe it shouldn´t - but it is still raining. Maybe critics and partisans and demagogues and others shouldn´t be playing the failure to pass a bill up the way they are, maybe they shouldn´t be more concerned about pork, maybe, maybe, maybe. . . but the fact is that this was an exploding cigar in Boehner´s face, one that he lit himself. It makes him look incompetent.

What kind of a political leader lets himself and his party get set up to be portrayed as so mired in protocol, process and, yes, obstructionism as to allow the wretched, huddled, shivering, starving, homeless victims of a calamitous hurricane to suffer needlessly? What on earth was Boehner thinking? WAS he thinking? This outcome was predictable even to a child.

There is a time and a place to stand firm and draw the line on pork and spending. Hurricane disaster relief is not that time nor that place.

On Feb. 27, a mild, dewy morning, Alitalia Flight 681 landed at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome after 13 hours in the air. A balding man with gray-white wisps of thin hair stepped out of coach class. He wore thick-rimmed brown glasses, black orthopedic shoes and a dark overcoat. He had a slight limp, and his back was stiff from the long flight. His belly was a bit swollen, due to many decades of cortisone treatments to help him breathe after he had lost part of a lung as a young man.

The one-time congressional dynamo and suicidal sexter will have a lot to prove. That his lying days are over. That he has the emotional maturity and psychic balance to lead a complex city, including in crisis. That he is interested in public service as its own reward, not to fulfill craving for attention. As a councilman and representative, as well as in a run for mayor, Weiner showed promise.

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

I subscribe to the view that barring something truly unforeseeable, the Democratic nomination in 2016 is Hillary’s for the taking. There is no second Barack Obama out there to take the nomination away from her. In fact, the non-Hillary Democratic bench is pathetically weak. Hillary’s many controversies are mostly ancient history, and mostly the fault of her husband, and are unlikely to derail a general election bid. Rather, Hillary’s weakness is her time as Secretary of State, an abysmal performance which has left us weaker internationally than ever before.

With President Obama, there’s always a catch. In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. The president’s price for adopting this gentle reform was hundreds of billions in new tax increases.
