Trade is endangered as a great
liquid superhighway is
blocked by drought

Telegraph [UK], by Geoffrey Lean

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 1/3/2013 6:51:03 AM

It is still Ol´ Man River, but it´s hardly ”rollin´ along” any more--and the US and the world may be about to suffer as a result. [Snip] Like Huckleberry Finn, coal and crude oil, steel and cement all get carried along this liquid super highway--as does about half of the US corn, wheat and soybean exports that help feed 100 countries--and this is its peak time of year. But one boat has already gone aground as water levels fall, giant barges have been bumping against the bottom, and traffic is forecast to grind to an effective halt this month.

Comments:
Unbelievably, this great old river, polluted by around a hundred or so petrochemical and other plants upriver, provides drinking water to New Orleans. The water has a complement of carcinogens and such a drought condition will probably concentrate the toxic chemicals.

And, as is often noted in New Orleans, "It´s been through eight other people before it gets to us."

Giant flood that closed I-35 between KC and Omaha for most of last summer...this is simply mismanagement by Army Corp of Engineers. Though it was amazingly dry from August to even now...

All those affected should go to Washington DC and demand money from taxpayers to deal with the devastation of this drought. Just like those in the Northeast who want the taxpayer to pay for their lack of insurance.

This is a very important story. The Corps of Engineers could fix this problem in a minute by releasing more water into the river. Instead they plan to dynamite obstacles and make it deeper and wider. So what will happen when we get some rain? Massive flooding and a potential jump of this enormous river. Look out.

I’ve been too cynical about these debates: tonight’s was brilliant. How exciting to see two people, representing opposite ends of our political divide, actually discussing competing visions for what Britain is and what it should be. [Snip] Britain is increasingly no longer divided by Left v Right but by establishment v populists. It’s an exciting moment in our politics--and we have the promise of an EU referendum to thank for it. Farage won. Oh, his answers were glib and simplistic; many of his policies are unreal and lacking in substance. But time and time again, he hit Clegg on the

Nigel Farage accused Nick Clegg of “wilfully lying to the British people” and warned that the European project could end in bloodshed during the pair’s second debate on Wednesday night. In a heated and confrontational televised debate the leader of the UK Independence Party warned that extremists would resort to “violence” unless the European Union “ends democratically”. Early polls showed that Mr Farage won the debate comfortably, securing 68 percent of public support in a YouGov poll and 69 percent according to ICM. If the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had been set up to investigate an apparent fall in global temperatures it is not hard to guess what its latest report would assert: falling temperatures will lead to mass starvation, millions of deaths from hypothermia, the smothering of northern cities with ice sheets. I have long come to realise how environmental science works: it starts from the premise that everything in the natural world is under threat, that mankind is to blame and that only drastic changes can save it. The first day of the terrorist’s trial coincides with the beginning of Jewish holiday Passover on April 14. Speaking to a conference of Jewish leaders in New York on Tuesday, NYPD officials said they are aware that the trial may ‘inspire’ terrorist acts. A decade after Abu Hamza was first arrested in Britain on a US warrant for terrorism charges, he is finally due to go on trial in Manhattan. The hook-handed cleric is facing allegations that he

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
