Awareness of global warming is several decades old, and Seattle is proud to be a leader. We drive hybrid cars. We recycle our garbage. We vote Democratic. We’re good, no? “No,” says Peter Ward. Ward is a professor of biology and of earth and space science at the University of Washington. He is a specialist on the Cretaceous period, from 135 million to 65 million years ago, when the sea level was higher than today and Puget Sound country was a steaming jungle. He is an expert on extinctions. He is a writer of science books
Comments: Liberals should lead the way then by not using Any utilities.
He claims to be a scientist, what specialty, Social Scientist? There has been zero warming in the last 16 years and the alarmists have dropped all the 4 foot sea level stuff because it clearly is wrong. And to burn oil to heat the house is really backward because it liberates nearly as much CO2 as coal. Any day now he will discover how they recycle electric cars when the battery quits and he learns they cost thousands of dollars to replace.
Now that we have learned that warming is caused by the sun. Will that be offset by cooling of the earth center? Is that having an impact on the ice caps? Do we have enough carbon to destroy the earth before we run out? I ask because experts keep saying we are running out. Will that matter as experts tell us viruses are becoming resistant and we don´t have much time left, experts say.
Note the author quotes no science, just a nutjob who happens to be a professor at UW. That said, I enjoyed the article because any news that depresses liberals these days gives me a lift. The more they get the want, the more miserable they get.
Ward´s big solution to the entire "problem" is the denial of coal to China. They own us pal, we can´t deny them anything. Don´t you have a better solution, like asking the human race to grow fur to keep warm?
In a year or two we will be firing up every coal burning power plant and then some to counteract the newly discovered Ice Age. The years without summer will be undeniable. Hope I´m wrong, but my prediction is probably as likely as anything Bruce comes up with.
Congratulations to the very wise L Dotters for accurately sizing up Seattle as the capitol of green lunatics. Washington State residents have had this patent disinformation crammed down their throats for at least two decades now - some states have kudzu, we have econuts.
We can´t use coal, gasoline, nuclear, wood fires, or fracking to get natural gas so then would? Solar and windmills sure hasn´t worked out. Of course, if all the global warming crowd want to go that route, be our guests, but don´t expect us to. And if the warmers think these energy sources are so great, let them out Their Own money where their mouth is! I propose that we should get to vote where our tax dollars go. Congress can put up a website where we can go to check off the proportion of our tax dollars that we want to go to each dept..
It is important to keep the mentally unstable away from dangerous weapons, like editorial pages. When someone is this far disconnected from factual reality, at what point is it necessary to involuntarily commit them to a mental hospital?
The good news is that he is 75, will not be around to spew his ignorant, irrational guilt trip for much longer. Talk about living in a bubble.
Yeah,if global warming is keeping people from burning up oil, electricity or gas, then why is it a bad thing?
God gave humans and other creatures the ability to adapt to circumstances, knowing the permutations of earth´s climate. There´s bad weather that hits uninhabited areas of the world all the time and nobody notices. It´s not the planet´s fault there´s people all over the place.
Leftist fruitcakes are coming out of the woodwork, wanting to ban the bible, constitution and fossils but you´d better leave their amenities alone.
I wonder if this clown has a huge house that´s an energy monster?
WHY, WHY, WHY are these people so arrogant to think that MANKIND should try to stop (and have the ability to) earth´s natural evolving? WHY do these arrogant people think that they know the perfect temperatures for the planet, the perfect levels of the sea, etc.? I am astonished and appalled at the Climate Change cult members´ belief that we, as humans, are more powerful and knowlegable than GOD.
Let Soros, Buffet, Gates et. al. start a green energy company to supply liberals with electricity. They would have to run their own lines and can´t piggy back on existing utility infrastructure. And the liberals would have to sign up in advance for this "energy" paying a large deposit to their "Gods" to get it started.
There is a coal-fired power plant 15 miles west of my house. I have never seen any smoke from it. What´s the problem? Speaking of global warming: It was about 10 degrees last night in northern Nevada and tonight will be colder.
Well, I´m really counting on Global Warming to melt the glaciers in my yard from the 1970s Ice Age; and the rising sea-level flooding to wash away the bodies of the millions who stared in the Malthusian die-off of the 1990s.
Or, was it the die-off of the 1970s, and the Ice Age of the 1990s? I forget....
The article is a bunch of crap full of lies. To wit:
FTA: “I was in Wyoming this past June,” he says. “I counted the cars of the first coal train we passed: 125 cars. Then, 20 minutes later, another, also 125 cars. Then another and on and on. Day and night, all going east, all with the lowest grade there is, Cretaceous-age, high-sulfur brown coal.”
However, from the U. of Wyoming website:
Wyoming coal is noted for its extremely low sulfur content (0.4% to 0.06 % with Eastern coal at 3.0% to 5.0 % or more).
The global warmers have gone right on as if they won the scientific argument, and even self-righteously, stentorously, proclaim that we should let "science" decide. This man in the article is ignorant, as are all global wamers.
Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, a rising star in the Democratic Party, confirmed on Monday that if she doesn´t run for re-election, she´ll run for governor. "I can say with absolute certainty I will run for one of two offices: either my state Senate seat, or the governor," Davis said at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. "I´m working very hard to decide what my next steps will be. I do think in Texas people feel like we need a change from the very fractured, very partisan leadership that we´re seeing in our statewide leadership right now."
Employer retiree health care coverage, which has been deteriorating for years amid high health care costs and waning employer interest, is headed for bigger changes thanks to the Affordable Care Act, a new study shows. More than 40 percent of employers have eliminated their traditional group health coverage for retirees over the age of 65 in favor of giving these former employees a defined amount of money for them to buy their coverage on the individual Medicare plan market, according to a new survey of more than 540 companies by employee benefits consulting firm Aon AON -0.22% Hewitt (AON).
Moscow -- Russia has opened a criminal case on an American band after one of its members stuffed the Russian flag into his pants, pulled it out his backside and whipped it between his legs, state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported Monday. (Snip) A member of the band´s crew, who asked to not be named for security reasons, told CNN the band was attacked Saturday by Russian nationalists inside Anapa airport in Krasnodar Krai. The band members were "beaten up" by a crowd of men who punched and kicked them, the crew member said, adding that some of the attackers
A last-minute appeal that could have stopped Billy Slagle’s execution — without opposition from state attorneys — was poised to be filed this morning with the Ohio Supreme Court. But the convicted Cleveland killer’s attorneys were unable to reach him over the weekend on Death Row at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution. Yesterday morning, they got the call: Slagle hanged himself in his cell about 5 a.m. and was declared dead about an hour later. Vicki Werneke and Joseph Wilhelm, Slagle’s federal public defenders, are left to wonder “what if?” “I don’t know what more we could have done,” Werneke said.
Two children died after a python got into an apartment in Campbellton, N.B., RCMP say. "Police are investigating two sudden deaths of two young boys," Const. Julie Rogers-Marsh said Monday. It´s believed the snake escaped from a pet store called Reptile Ocean. The victims were boys aged five and seven. They were in the apartment above the store. "The preliminary investigation has led police to believe that a python snake escaped its enclosure in the store sometime overnight," the constable said. Rogers-Marsh said it went through the ventilation. "It´s believed the two boys were strangled by the snake," she said.
WASHINGTON - The United States extended the closures of some embassies and consulates in the Middle East - which had been closed Sunday due to an al Qaeda threat - through August 10 due to caution but not the emergence of any new threat, the State Department said. Other U.S. diplomatic posts, including in Kabul, Baghdad and Algiers, that had been closed on Sunday, will reopen on Monday, the State Department said. Posts in Abu Dhabi, Amman, Cairo, Riyadh, Dhahran, Jeddah, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Manama, Muscat, Sanaa, Tripoli, Antanarivo, Bujumbura, Djibouti, Khartoum, Kigali, and Port Louis will be closed through Saturday.
PROVO, Utah — Time may be running short for hardcore "Star Wars" fans to see the real-life set used to portray Anakin Skywalker´s childhood home of Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine. Brigham Young University planetary scientist Jani Radebaugh said new research shows a fast-moving sand dune is spilling onto streets of the set in the Tunisian desert and will eventually bury buildings. The dune was measured at 20 feet tall and 300 feet wide in 2009, and it´s been moving toward the set about 50 feet per year since 2002, she said. Research by her and two colleagues
The closure of 19 embassies Sunday and the issuing of a month-long global travel alert for all Americans abroad shows how Al Qaeda´s threat to the United States has evolved since 9/11 – and how the US response has evolved, too. The closed embassies are all in an arc that runs from North Africa through the Middle East to Afghanistan, and the information suggests that the primary threat comes from Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula – the Yemen-based Al Qaeda branch that many experts say is now the movement´s strongest. Officials with knowledge of the intelligence
WASHINGTON -- The 162,000 jobs the economy added in July were a disappointment. The quality of the jobs was even worse. A disproportionate number of the added jobs were part-time or low-paying — or both. Part-time work accounted for more than 65 percent of the positions employers added in July. Low-paying retailers, restaurants and bars supplied more than half July´s job gain. "You´re getting jobs added, but they might not be the best-quality job," says John Canally, an economist with LPL Financial in Boston. So far this year, low-paying industries have provided 61 percent of the nation´s job growth
Two beliefs continue to shape debate on Obamacare. First, pre-existing medical conditions shouldn’t prevent people from obtaining affordable health insurance. And second, people who don’t want health insurance shouldn’t be forced by the government to purchase it. These may seem to be reasonable positions. But they are incompatible. That’s been shown by historical events, and it’s now being strikingly confirmed by recent experience in the emerging Obamacare insurance exchanges. The crux of the matter is what economists call the adverse-selection problem. Uninsured people with pre-existing conditions often face tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in
MOSCOW — The American rock group Bloodhound Gang was kicked out of a Russian music festival and pelted with eggs after videos emerged of its bass player shoving a Russian flag down his pants at a recent concert in Ukraine. Russian prosecutors are even considering whether to open a criminal case in the matter, which comes amid a rise in U.S.-Russian tensions. Videos posted online of Wednesday´s concert in the Ukrainian city of Odessa show bass player Jared Hasselhoff pushing the Russian white, blue and red flag down the front of his pants and pulling it out the back.
Aetna Inc has withdrawn its applications to sell insurance plans on Maryland´s individual health exchange after it was asked to lower its rates by up to 29 percent, according to the state´s department of insurance. In an Aug. 1 letter sent to the Department of Insurance, Aetna said the required rate modifications cut premiums too low on both its Aetna and Coventry products. Aetna closed on the acquisition of Coventry Health Care this spring. "Unfortunately, we believe the modifications to the rates filed by Aetna and Coventry would not allow us to collect enough premiums to cover the cost
In 2008 and then again in 2012, after retired four-star General Colin Powell endorsed and then voted for Barack Obama, the former Secretary of State´s sanity was already in question. At least now, after having his email account hacked by high-level security-breacher Guccifer, Colin Powell´s besmirching of the Republican Party´s "shift to the right" and "identity crisis" finally makes sense. It seems that for years the mannerly and always professional Colin Powell has been cyber-comporting with a 46-year-old Romanian European Parliament member, Social Democrat, and past spokesperson for Romanian president Ion Iliescu named Corina Cretu
Conservatives have for years attempted to put our finger upon precisely why Barack Obama strikes us as queer in precisely the way he does. There is an alienness about him, which in the fever swamps is expressed in all that ridiculous Kenyan-Muslim hokum, but his citizen-of-the-world shtick is strictly sophomore year — the great globalist does not even speak a foreign language. Obama has been called many things — radical, socialist — labels that may have him dead to rights at the phylum level but not down at his genus or species. His social circle includes
For nearly a year, we have had no answer to why the administration lied about Benghazi — why it told the world, not to mention the parents of our murdered SEALs at the funeral of their sons, that the cause of that fatal conflagration was an anti-Islamic video no one saw, when the various arms of our executive branch (White House, State and intelligence) already knew, or strongly suspected, it was a terror attack orchestrated by al-Qaeda affiliates. You only have to read the now infamous talking points to know that. That this lie was deeply immoral is obvious.
He thought he was a woman trapped in a man’s body — but it turns out he’s “just another boring straight guy.” ABC News editor Don Ennis strolled into the newsroom in May wearing a little black dress and an auburn wig and announced he was transgender and splitting from his wife. He wanted to be called Dawn. But now he says he suffered from a two-day bout of amnesia that has made him realize he wants to live his life again as Don. “I accused my wife of playing some kind of cruel joke, dressing
WASHINGTON — Former Massachusetts lawmaker Barney Frank revealed that he doesn’t believe in God. During Friday’s appearance on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Frank, who championed the decriminalization of pot while serving in the House of Representatives, admitted to smoking marijuana and being an atheist. “You were in a fairly safe district. You were not one of those congress people who would have to worry about every little thing,” Maher said to Frank. “You could come on this show and sit next to a pot-smoking atheist and it wouldn’t bother you.”
Washington--As hundreds of commuters emerged from Amtrak and commuter trains at Union Station on a recent morning, an armed squad of men and women dressed in bulletproof vests made their way through the crowds. The squad was not with the Washington police department or Amtrak’s police force, but was one of the Transportation Security Administration’s Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response squads — VIPR teams for short — assigned to perform random security sweeps to prevent terrorist attacks at transportation hubs across the United States.(Snip)With little fanfare, the agency best known for airport screenings has vastly expanded its reach
The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking
In an interview for The Guardian Weekend magazine, actor Matt Damon recently weighed in with his thoughts on how President Barack Obama has handled the scandals that have engulfed his administration since the spring. Damon, a vocal supporter of the president since his 2008 campaign for national office, said that Obama is overcompensating for his lack of military background with his tough response to controversies like how the government is responding to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The actor said that Obama is allowing himself to “get bullied” and is acting as though is “manhood”
A poll released Friday by Public Policy Polling found that Alaska voters would pick former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the state´s former Republican governor, Sarah Palin, if the two women were to face off in the 2016 presidential election. Clinton led with 49 percent in the hypothetical match-up, with Palin at 40 percent, a nine-point gap. As of July 3, Republicans comprised 27 percent of the state´s registered voters and Democrats made up just 14 percent. The last time Alaskans opted for the Democrats´ presidential candidate was in 1964. Clinton trails five other hypothetical GOP candidates –
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus threatened to pull the group’s partnership with NBC and CNN for 2016 GOP presidential primary debates if the networks moved ahead with plans to air films on Hillary Clinton. “If they have not agreed to pull this programming prior to the start of the RNC’s Summer Meeting on August 14, I will seek a binding vote stating that the RNC will neither partner with these networks in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates they sponsor,” Preibus said in a statement. In individual letters to CNN President Jeff Zucker and NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt,
The Pentagon has placed its elite cadre of special operations teams on full alert to launch preemptive attacks against suspected al Qaeda targets across the globe, according to reports. The American special forces teams have spent the past week waiting for U.S. military and intelligence officials to confirm the whereabouts of the terror cell plotting to attack U.S. diplomatic outposts in the Mideast and North Africa. Unnamed sources told CNN on Monday that the teams were poised to carry out the preemptive strikes, but declined to comment on where the U.S. forces were located or which potential
Oprah Winfrey on Monday said the killings of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are the "same thing." This transpired during an interview with The Grio that aired on NBC´s Today show. OPRAH WINFREY: It´s so easy during this time: Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin parallel to Emmett Till, let me just tell you. In my mind, same thing. But you can, you can get stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we´ve come. Really? Martin and Till are the same thing?
