| After two weeks of rumors about the health of President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, his Vice-President, Nicolás Maduro, announced on Sunday that the situation was “delicate.” He had flown to Cuba, where Chávez is being treated, to be at his side. This came just a few days after a televised Christmas Eve speech in which Maduro said that Chávez had called him from the CIMEQ—an exclusive hospital in Havana—and was “up and taking exercise.” That announcement had increased the confusion that reigns in Venezuela because of its blatant contradictions with an official report

A few days ago, I reported on the shocking story about the Army instructor in Pennsylvania who labeled Evangelical Christians, Catholics, Orthodox Jews and Mormons "religious extremists" alongside Hamas and al Qaeda during an Army Reserve Equal Opportunity training brief on extremism. A former vice mayor exposed himself and masturbated in the direction of at least three different women while driving his car at 90mph, it emerged today. Rights activists reacted with indignation on Wednesday after Singapore´s High Court rejected a petition to repeal an archaic law criminalising sex between men. In a ruling issued on Tuesday, the court said it was up to parliament to repeal a controversial provision in the penal code known as Section 377A, whose constitutionality has been questioned by a gay couple. During a rally held on Tuesday with workers, Venezuela´s acting President Nicolás Maduro announced a rise in the minimum salary of 38-45% that would be implemented in three stages. The first 20% would be implemented in May, from USD 325.55 to USD 390.66. The next increase (10%) would be adopted in September, bringing salaries up to USD 429.73. A final adjustment would be enforced in November by 5-10%, based on inflation. The president in charge also announced the creation of "workers´ groceries," aimed at bringing state-run food network Mercal to state-run companies so that workers can directly buy foodstuffs at their workplace.

ONLY a handful of peace-time politicians can claim to have changed the world. Margaret Thatcher, who died this morning, was one. She transformed not just her own Conservative Party, but the whole of British politics. Her enthusiasm for privatisation launched a global revolution and her willingness to stand up to tyranny helped to bring an end to the Soviet Union. Winston Churchill won a war, but he never created an “ism”. The essence of Thatcherism was to oppose the status quo and bet on freedom—odd, since as a prim control freak, she was in some ways the embodiment of conservatism.

In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources.
