Yesterday, the Republican leadership insisted there would be no fiscal cliff deal unless there was a cap on cost of living adjustments for social security. They were adamant - a deal killer. That was yesterday. By last night, that strong stance had melted like a stick of butter at a midsummer Grant Park picnic. The Hill: Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) said Social Security cuts are all but off the table. She said that the issue would be "a part of a larger debate," later in 2013 when Congress considers raising the debt-ceiling limit.

Dittos, OP. Moran has it right. The provisions of the "cliff" and the debt ceiling are already law, and are better for the country than anything the Pubs can negotiate. Once over the cliff, there will be screams and howls from all corners. Perhaps then the Pubs will find their spine and do what´s right for the country, and a public shocked out of its trance might support them.

I am done wishing, hoping that the GOP will find some courage. They have made fools of us for many years that way. The GOP elected officials have no reason to change. Their financial houses are fine, raises all round.
Even our retired Republican "statesmen" are scared to make a peep cuz they don´t want to be criticized. This ended just as many conservatives sadly predicted.

Blaming the Democrats for everything is over with. It´s time to admit that the two party system ended a long time ago. We have to accept that every person in congress is there for two reasons only; to stay there as long as they can and to get as much money as they possibly can while they are there. They have nothing else in mind except to come up with enough continuous static and chatter to keep us from storming the place and beheading the whole lot.

I suggest instead of screwing over the retirees with even MORE phony inflation "adjustments" they try SS for ONLY legal citizens and a PAY FREEZE for all Federal workers AND a spending cap!

With all the billions and trillions we waste on foreign aid for people who hate us anyway, handouts to green energy Friends of Barack, 1040-supplied welfare "tax refunds" to those who didn´t pay any taxes in, bloated federal payrolls for bloated federal agencies, and on and on and on, .... how do Repblicans decide to reduce spending? Wait for it .... CUT SOCIAL SECURITY!!!!??

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.
