Pentagon debuts float in
Rose parade to honor vets

SAN DIEGO - It´s been almost 60 years since James McEachin returned home with a bullet still lodged in his chest, finding an America indifferent toward the troops who fought in Korea. Now he will get the homecoming parade he had expected. The Defense Department for the first time will put a float in Pasadena´s Tournament of Roses , one the most watched parades , to commemorate the veterans from a conflict that still casts a shadow over the world. "I think it´s a magnificent gesture and it cures a lot of ills," said McEachin,

And who bears the cost? These floats cost big bucks. Nevermind that the country is speeding off the cliff, and that the American people are constantly enjoined to donate to the care of our wounded, just throw a million $$ at a parade. It´s just money. Sarc/off

The article says the cost is $247,000, which is a fraction of what many floats cost and probably won´t be the (further discounted) price the Pentagon will pay.

As womeone who was married to a wounded Marine veteran of the Chosin Reservoir ambush, who is the father of my children, I believe it is well worth it. This amount wouldn´t pay for one of Obie´s flights of whim on Taxpayer One.

PS. This "just a parade" is broadcast around the world and seen by many, many millions of persons. It is a reasonable tribute to those who gave so much in such an absurd "conflict", a bloody war in which victory was never declared.

General Eisenhower recognized the Korean War when he requested that he be replaced by a wounded veteran when he was asked to be Grand Marshal of the January 1, 1951, Tournament of Roses Parade. The young man selected, Marine Cpl. Robert S. Gray, was one of the few wounded veterans back that early with wounds that could be covered by his uniform, except for a sling. He was driving a truck when hit during the Chosin Reservoir ambush (they never called it a retreat), the side of his truck sprayed with fire, and probably still carries the fragments that were left in the whole left side of his body. Along with the nightmares.

#1 should consider themself fortunate that they were not called upon to fight in Korea. Or perhaps anywhere else?

Can Obamacare Avoid a Consumer Rebellion?
National Journal, by Sam Baker    Original Article

When Obamacare handed insurance companies millions of compulsory customers, it also handed them a reminder of one of their industry´s toughest realities: Consumers want low premiums, and they want to see any doctor they want. And it´s impossible to give them both. Generally, insurers selling plans on Obamacare´s exchanges opted to keep premiums low, hoping the public would prefer a low upfront price tag—even if that meant customers couldn´t always pick their first-choice doctor. But "if you like your doctor, you can hope she´s in our network" was always going to be a tough sell for insurers. With the insurance

The attorney for Lois Lerner blasted the House GOP for recalling the former IRS official to testify next week, saying it would only serve to embarrass her and could increase threats against Lerner and her family. Bill Taylor, Lerner’s attorney, told House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) that he told committee staff in January that Lerner would continue to invoke her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination if recalled, and that she would "happily testify" if given immunity. Taylor, of Zuckerman Spaeder, said he heard nothing further from the committee until Issa wrote to him on Tuesday, saying he was hauling Lerner

You probably have an opinion about the Arizona legislature´s controversial new bill, SB 1062, awaiting signature or veto by Gov. Jan Brewer. You may have complained that it reinstates "Jim Crow" by allowing businesses to refuse to serve gays. You may have defended it as a necessary response to the courts´ encroachments on the freedom of religion, where people have been sued for refusing to bake cakes or take pictures at gay weddings. But have you actually read the bill itself? (Make sure you´ve read the right version: the original text was later amended.) It´s shorter than most of the

Vice president Joe Biden’s latest blunder, handed down during an appearance on “The View,” has raised the hackles of several women who say his 1950s-era image of what women want is degrading, offensive and ridiculously stereotypical. His words, touting Obamacare: “How many of you are single women with children with a dead-end job … there because of your health insurance.” He went on: “You would rather have the opportunity to spend the next couple years with your children, [but] you’re not trapped in that job.” Enter Obamacare, and he said, on The View: “You’re [now] able to make a choice. …

HONOLULU — When the federal government began parceling out billions of dollars for the new health insurance marketplaces under the Affordable Care Act, President Obama´s home state was in an enviable position. Hawaii already had one of the highest insured rates in the nation as the result of a 40-year-old state law requiring employers to provide coverage. The state received more than $205 million in federal money to build a health insurance exchange to serve those still uninsured. Yet four months after enrollments began, the Hawaii Health Connector has allocated $120 million while signing up only about 4,300 people for

LOS ANGELES— A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree. Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them. Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece. "I don´t like to

Mike Huckabee, the Fox News host who is weighing a second White House run, used an interview with Bill O’Reilly to float the issue. He isn’t sure Clinton will run, Huckabee said: “She’s going to be

It has the makings of a royal mess for “King Barack.” Monday morning’s Supreme Court argument about the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases went badly for the Obama administration — so much so that the real question before the justices seemed to be how severe the EPA’s loss would be. The administration’s solicitor general, Donald Verrilli, pleaded with the justices to recognize the “urgent problem” of climate change, because the “threat to future generations gets worse” with each passing year. But as the argument played out, the court’s swing justice, Anthony Kennedy, made clear that he

Compared with how the Obama administration has swept under the rug the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012, Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate burglary was rank amateurism. To be fair, Nixon’s team of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, and Dean were not in the same league as Obama’s, which includes not only his cabinet but most of the national media and much of Congress.
