| The path to Wenchi leads along the rim of an extinct volcano. It winds through banana plantations and brier patches, with wild marjoram growing rampant along the edge. (snip) The children in Wenchi have no opportunity to attend school, because the nearest school is too far away or their parents prefer to send them out to fetch water or into the fields, where they watch the cows in the morning and the goats in the afternoon. But what if these children, who, like their parents, can neither read nor write, were provided with a computer? And if

Comments: One almost thinks of the "Prime Directive" from the Star Trek series....should one just leave these civilizations to develop on their own or is one morally obligated to see that they get an education (even if it´s solely provided by a hand-held computer) in order to better themselves and their community? A U.S. aid organization is attempting the latter and there are now Ethiopian kids who are speaking English without ever having a human teacher.

Interesting article, especially the observations of ´Mike´. I cannot help but wonder about the ´revisionist´ information that can be poured into little minds and subsequently spread to their elders.

It´s just possible that this guy is onto something. Imagine a child in a faraway land becoming entranced with the world of the Internet and the glimpses it provides of a different way of life.
Naturally, the child would like to explore further. But, in order to do that, you must know how to read. Thankfully, the device you have been given includes all sorts of fun learning games to teach yourself the alphabet. You have motivation and now, you have means.
Certain men and women of the past, similarly trapped in unpromising environments, educated themselves into a new life...and did so with arguably inferior resources than those utilized by the children referenced in this article.

While extending the payroll tax cut through the end of last year, members of Congress last fall took what many feel was a long overdue whack at the cost of their retirement plan. They bumped up the rate at which federal employees contribute to their pension plan, saving an estimated $15 billion over the next 11 years. They also made sure that none of the increase applied to themselves. Anyone in service before the law went into effect would pay into the pension plan at the old rate. In his letters, Guantánamo Bay prisoner Shaker Aamer appeals in desperation to his captors and the outside world: "Please … torture me in the old way. Here they destroy people mentally and physically without leaving marks." Mindful of the repeated rounds of cuts the military has already endured, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, recently delivered a grim warning: "If you want [the military] to be doing what it´s doing today, then we can´t give you another dollar." His worries reflect reductions that started in 2009 and have reached crippling levels, even in President Obama´s proposals to avert sequestration. I take the general at his word, but I am concerned that the president does not. Sequester hurts national security, not just because 50% of the cuts fall on the military´s 18% share of the overall

A Texas high school student has filed a federal lawsuit against her school and her teachers after she was punished for refusing to salute and recite the Mexican pledge of allegiance. The Thomas More Law Center filed the suit on behalf of Brenda Brinsdon alleging the McAllen Independent School District violated the 15-year-old girl’s constitutional rights when she was forced to recite the Mexican pledge and sing the Mexican national anthem. Brinsdon, who is the daughter of a Mexican immigrant and an American father, refused. She believed it was un-American to pledge a loyalty oath to

Conservative movie lovers didn´t suffer any serious Red State taunts during the just-wrapped Academy Awards telecast. Michael Moore wasn´t on hand to bash the GOP, and show host Seth MacFarlane trained his immature wit on George Clooney, breast-baring actresses and the show´s ridiculous length. A new global campaign to persuade nations to ban "killer robots" before they reach the production stage is to be launched in the UK by a group of academics, pressure groups and Nobel peace prize laureates. Robot warfare and autonomous weapons, the next step from unmanned drones, are already being worked on by scientists and will be available within the decade, said Dr Noel Sharkey, a leading robotics and artificial intelligence expert and professor at Sheffield University. He believes that development of the weapons is taking place in an effectively unregulated environment, with little attention being paid to moral implications and

Diane de Courcy acknowledged that 13 countries reported on the story about an inspector with Quebec´s language office, the OQLF, who told a Montreal restaurant owner that the menu was too Italian because it didn´t contain the French translation for the word "pasta." After heavy public criticism and embarrassing international attention, the OQLF relented and admitted its inspector showed "an excess of zeal." Republicans have a problem with young people 18-29. Democrats have a problem with seniors over 65. The story taken from this dichotomy is popular and simple enough: Republicans are the party of crusty old folks who are going to die, and Democrats are the party of the youth, who will lead a continued resurgence into office. I´m not so sure about this story; (snip) Indeed, if you came of age during the Franklin D Roosevelt administration, you are more Democratic than the nation as a whole. Middle class in the U.S. can mean something very different depending on where you call your home state. Census bureau numbers show a shocking disparity in the definition of ´middle income´ - with Maryland boasting an average of $67,469 and Mississippi posting an appallingly low $39,078, a difference of $28,391. Debate over the definition of middle class comes after President Obama´s State of the Union address this week. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
