Long-Term Fiscal Deficits
May Bring Dangerous
Flood Of Inflation

Investor´s Business Daily, by Alejandro A. Chafuen and Daniel Bunn

Original Article

Posted By:PageTurner, 12/29/2012 1:00:28 PM

There is some dispute on who was the first person to come up with one of the most popular forecasts of all time: "après moi le deluge," or, "after me the flood." Was it Madame de Pompadour or Louis XV? We sometimes use the term in economics to criticize the attitude of those who focus only on the short term. (Snip) Those who focus on the longer term and outside Washington and New York focus more on fiscal deficits and the potential floods that they might carry. Inflationary floods have been effective tools to destroy savings and weaken the rule of law.

Comments:
After the fiscal cliff and the regulatory cliff and the social security cliff, get ready for the monetary cliff.

"...may..."?!?!?! The only way Obama has to mitigate the enormous debt is to inflate the way out of it.
Remember Lenins comment, he was going to destroy the middle class is by grinding them between the two stones of taxation and inflation.

I wonder if the Republicans could wage a Dim-like PR campaign about Obama´s "War on Savings", which is exactly what is going on. For example, a capital gains tax + inflation = confiscation of assets; ie, the asset doesn´t appreciate in real terms but it still gets taxed.

Reply 4 - Posted by: dman, 12/29/2012 3:08:33 PM     (No. 9088943)

Actually, a cliff-induced recession would help to arrest it. Blocking any more increases in the debt ceiling and any more CRs - forcing Reid to pass the budgets "sequestered" on his desk - would also suppress inflationary forces. Dittos a tightened Fed policy. We all hated what Paul Volker did in the early 80´s, but it arrested the Carter hyper-inflation and facilitated two decades of prosperity as a result.

For what it´s worth, as far as I´m concerned, we went off the "fiscal cliff" cliff long ago. The more I hear the words, "fiscal cliff," the more I´m tempted to jump off a cliff, myself. Good thing I live in Manhattan, where we don´t have any cliffs.

Well, I´ve made my peace with the place we once called America- The United States thereof. Well, we started going over this cliff in the last two years of Bush- nothing has happened to make it avoidable in the last six years. Few people realize how much- more than a trillion of our tax dollars went to Europe to shore their failing socialist system - directly from the Bush WH- before he left- in May alone 800 billion was gone! The international money conglomerate simply reached into the US treasury and helped itself- just as the bankers did here- It´s more than a disgrace- it is criminal and not one thing we can do now to stop it. We´ve been walking but, essentially, eviscerated as a nation for a long time.

"After what we have lived and seen, and the delicate situations we have witnessed, we may say that we cannot objectively and categorically attest to a fully democratic and clean vote in this great country," said Spanish Gustavo Palomares, the president of the Institute of Higher European Studies. He was one of the international guests accredited by the National Electoral Council (CNE) and invited by the opposition coalition. In this sense, international guests supported the petition of opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski for a thorough and objective recount of "each tally sheet, each polling station, and each voters´ roll."

Venezuela: An Election

Latin America: Venezuela´s election on Sunday, which saw bus driver Nicolas Maduro declared the winner by a razor-thin margin, reeked of electoral fraud. Kudos to challenger Henrique Capriles for calling it out. Fraud is a strong word but, yes, it´s the clearest conclusion from Venezuela´s election Sunday to pick a successor to the late socialist dictator Hugo Chavez. Chavez´s hand-picked successor "won" Venezuela´s election Sunday, with what Chavez´s anything-but impartial CNE electoral body declaring he´d gotten 50.6% of the vote, while his challenger, Miranda state governor Henrique Capriles Radonski garnered 49.07% — a gap of just 235,000 votes.

icolas Maduro, political heir to the late Hugo Chavez, was declared the winner of Venezuela’s presidential election yesterday in a result that was immediately challenged by the opposition. The 50-year-old former bus driver received 50.7 percent of the votes, the national electoral council said after about 99 percent of ballots were counted. Henrique Capriles Radonski, who temporarily stepped down as governor of Miranda state to run, had 49.1 percent and vowed to contest the results. “We had a fair and constitutional victory,” Maduro said after the results were announced. “This is another victory, a homage to our comandante Hugo Chavez.”

How Thatcher Changed Hearts

It wasn’t just Margaret Thatcher’s steadfast economic and foreign policies that helped to defeat the Evil Empire and to bring down the Iron Curtain. She also changed hearts and minds — and this PJ Media author, who grew up on the other side of the Iron Curtain, has a personal story to tell. As many Soviet kids did in the 1970s and 1980s, I occasionally tuned my shortwave radio to Voice of America or the BBC Russian Service, hoping to hear their alternative take on world events and, if I was lucky, get the latest rock-music updates.
