| “Superstorm” Sandy killed more than 100 people, destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, and left millions without food, water, electricity, sanitation or shelter for days or even weeks. Our thoughts and prayers remain focused on its victims, many of whom are still grieving as they struggle with the storm’s wintry aftermath and try to rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, too many politicians continue to use the storm to advance agendas, deflect blame for incompetence and mistakes, and obfuscate and magnify future risks from building and development projects that they have designed, promoted, permitted and profited from.

This great article is full of facts I didn´t know, starting with the history of many hurricanes and superstorms on the northeast coast over the centuries -- not as a result of global warming.

Anti gouging laws prevent the clean up from happening as it could.
Many people would be happy to pay a premium to get their work done NOW.

Great read, dead on. Problem is same as happened to New Orleans - central planning with no forethought about floods.
Core problem is stupid/corrupt politicians. Nobody ever blames them. Bloomberg, with all his money, you´d think he would be immune to the graft/political pressure, the central planning/keep building scam. Shows how irresistible the pull must be.
We live 70 miles inland from NYC. Had NO property damage.

Don´t totally agree with the stand here on anti-gouging laws. These people did need some protection from scammers who would have moved in for some quick money, do shoddy work and then leave the area. Now if by anti-gouging we are talking about fixed prices, then yeah, that is the wrong thing to do. What really screwed up the situation is the union stand of not allowing non-union people in to help out when the cleanup first started. That is why my giveadarn meter is broken.

Mrs.Lakerman and I own our home. And we insure against a wide range of hazards. We do not live near the water, but if we did, we would purchase flood insurance.
So lots of people chose to live near the water, exposed to the possibility of storm/flood damage. And apparently they chose not to purchase insurance against those hazards.
So tell me why my tax money should go to rebuild houses for those who operated on the cheap, and did not purchase adequate insurance?? Isn´t this a three little pigs sort of story?

Sorry #6, but you can´t be a little pregnant. Either we have a centrally planned economy or a free market economy subject to the rule of law!
The laws of supply and demand don´t get repealed just because an event causes demand to sky rocket. Prices reflect this and the free market continues to be the most efficient allocator of scarce recourses.
As for fly by night and shoddy work, that falls under "buyer beware" and can be remedied in the civil courts!
Let the free market work and NY,NJ and NO would be back to normal in 1 the amount of time and a lot cheaper too

There are many people alive who experienced some of the storms mentioned in the article. The Long Island Hurricane of 1938 did much more damage than what was mentioned in the New York centric article. Rhode Island was hardest hit. Entire barrier islands were wiped clean and there was 12 feet of water in downtown Providence. Over 600 people were killed all told. Blame was placed on lack of prediction but in Sandi there was prediction but people failed to heed it.

A coalition of Eagle Scouts, Scoutmasters, and parents have launched a new organization vowing to keep sex and politics out of the Boy Scouts of America. “The Boy Scouts are one of the great jewels of American culture,” said John Stemberger, an Eagle Scout and the founder of OnMyHonor.net. Representatives from more than a dozen states gathered in Florida to announce the opposition to any attempt to allow open homosexuality in the BSA. In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs."
