| It was perhaps inevitable that the first-ever war broadcast live on TV would produce an outsize media hero like its commander, Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf. But the four-star general, who died Thursday at 78, was no creation of the media — though he was a natural in front of the cameras. He was, instead, a battle-hardened, highly decorated combat veteran and a brilliant tactician who resisted the impulse of too many other generals to play politician. Never before had America enjoyed such a stunning military success as the air and land assault that drove Iraqi forces from occupied Kuwait.

Colin powell must be having a fit. Gen. Schwarzkopf getting ALL the credit for a successful war while powell was the head of the military.

As it should be #1. The Chiefs of Staff ("staff" might be a clue there) are advisors to the civilian commanders and not themselves in the chain of command.
"Following the Goldwater-Nichols Act in 1986 the Joint Chiefs of Staff do not have operational command authority, neither individually nor collectively, as the chain of command goes from the President to the Secretary of Defense, and from the Secretary of Defense to the Commanders of the Combatant Commands."
Schwarzkopf was the field commander and rightfully gets credit for what happened on the field of battle.
If General Schwarzkopf got some good advice from General Powell or the other Chiefs and took it, then they should get credit for that.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is not "the head of the military". The President is.

The world of golf (an admittedly precious domain) held its breath Friday night and Saturday morning, waiting to learn if Tiger Woods would be disqualified at the Masters for a rules violation. This, after the enforcers of the rules had assessed a one-shot penalty against a fourteen year-old for slow play. Chinese amateur Tianlang Guan took it well, saying he "respected" the decision. Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.
