Barring a last-minute breakthrough, taxes will go up for every American taxpayer on Jan. 1 — and that’s a development conservatives should welcome. Don’t get me wrong, it would be better not to raise taxes on anyone, pursue pro-growth tax reform and cut the size of government instead. But that’s not what the American people voted to do last month. Americans cast their ballots for big government. Now it’s time to pay for it. Until now, the growth of government under President Obama has not hit the pocketbooks of most Americans. During Obama’s first term, federal spending
Just give the democraps EVERYTHING they want - make them own the economy hook, line and sinker or I should say stinker. In 2 years we will get back 4-6 seats in the Senate (if they can keep their mouths shut when it comes to abortion.)
Good idea. My Liberal friend stands by Obama policies, even though I try to tell her that he has spent every single cent her beloved Grandchildren will ever earn. Maybe taking more of her money in 2013 will change her mind. Yet again, maybe not.
WaPo actually printed this? Thiessen is spot on, of course. A substantial part of the electorate is ignoring or going along with NerØbama´s programs because the plan was to "tax that guy behind the tree". If everyone feels the pinch, and very few will like it, they will be forced to think about how much government they are willing to pay for. No more living off of their children´s futures.
While I´m not looking forward to the serious dent in my budget, it´s time to swallow some bitter medicine and get the nation´s fiscal house in order.
Stop the Kabuki theater. Over the cliff we go, tumbling towards the debt ceiling. Tough predicaments sometime require tough solutions.
An increase in middle class tax rates, an `owning the economy`, will not shame the democrats. They are simply shameless and will never take responsibility for their actions. When they have exhausted every penny from a newly minted tax increase, they will be back for more tax increases. There is never enough to satisfy their appetite for economic destruction.
Hey Marc. Let´s don´t and say we did. Or even better - why not go ahead and let taxes rise on the $250,000+ people and let the struggling among us off the hook for now?
But we won´t. I do admit it won´t look good for Obama & the Dims. But do you really think people will stop blaming the Republicans and Congress?? The newsbots are doing their bit for the regime as usual and are calling the Bush tax cuts the Bush "era" tax cuts. Never let it be remotely implied that Bush saved us from the type of royal fracking Obama is about to unloose upon us.
And it will hurt so many of us. But no - with all us purists on his back, Boehner won´t take the deal.. so here we go! Thanks, guys! (not)
What the Republicans need to do is stop protecting the Democrats and business-as-usual in Washington.
Stop allowing them to extend negotations, deadlines, and being nice (they´re expecting all of that and use it against you).
Democrats won´t be able to help themselves in January and will look to increase taxes on more than just the riches 2% - and republicans need to get out of their way by letting them -- blaming them all the way.
Pointedly remind every time you´re in TV or radio show that the president´s tax on the top 2% would hardly cover 1 week´s worth of the debt spending Obama wants. And, remind "that even with the top 2% tax increase the Democrats will still be looking to borrow over $1 trillion each year".
Many think the debt and deficit are the same thing, and the rich paying more will balance the budget.
The Obamas spent way more than every penny I have ever paid into the federal tax system in my lifetime last weekend in Hawaii. And believe me I have paid a lot. I no longer care who they raise taxes on. I am in full agreement to let these ignorant pansy ass liberals who think they are so smart pay for what they have done - and if I have to pay along with them so be it. And that goes double for the Republicans who stayed home because Romney wasn´t conservative enough. Really?
This is a nonsense article. If 47 % of our citizens pay no income tax, they and another 10- 15% returned this Democratic administration to power fof the coming four years.
You can blame some of the little old ladies... the feeble minded... the closet Mormon haters.. the Ron Paul enthusiasts... and a few others for the outcome, but it wasn´t responsible, conscientious, hard working, innovative, entrepreneurial people who bought into this.
So having brought back the Solyndra and the union crowd, should we relax and let them feel good abour impoverishing our children and grandchildren? I think not.
´´Why not let taxes rise on the middle class,´´ ...or, ´´How America came to be OVER-TAXED and, ´love,´ it?!!´´ ...YIKES!!! This is NOT a positive plan for securing our Constitutional freedoms and passing them safely on to the next generations, eh?
There is already a trillion dollar tax increase because of Barry´s Death Bill. I agree with the previous poster who said raise taxes on each and every demonrat. They voted for the idjet in the WH; therefore they should have to reap the benefits.
The problem with this logic is most of the people who voted for Obama don´t pay taxes. The only way to make this work is a VAT tax, which I would be in favor of if they froze government spending (-) 2% a year. Make the idiots who voted for Obama pay for his idiotic socialist policies. Same with Obamcare, make the freebie crowd pay a $10 access fee at every level of treatment.
Raising taxes on the middle class punishes the wrong people who are trying to make the country work.
Even if Obama get his tax increase on the rich,it would barely cover the cost of the hurricane bill,so what´s the point. Whatever happened to pay go, Pelosi imposed when she was speaker? The republicans actually do it and get bashed for it.
Sorry #5, swallowing "bitter medicine" will not get the country´s financial house in order. This rogue, spendthrift administration is spending money it doesn´t even have, or ever will have. That is what needs fixed. See comments of #12.
As long as the federal government can simply borrow $1 trillion+ year, nothing is going to change. Just be locked & loaded in time for the next recession. It will make the last one look like a Sunday picnic.
Ginger Chapman and her husband, Doug, are sitting on the health care cliff. The cheapest insurance plan they can find through the new federal marketplace in New Hampshire will cost their family of four about $1,000 a month, 12 percent of their annual income of around $100,000 and more than they have ever paid before. Even more striking, for the Chapmans, is this fact: If they made just a few thousand dollars less a year — below $94,200 — their costs would be cut in half, because a family like theirs could qualify for federal subsidies. The Chapmans acknowledge that
President Obama expressed confidence Friday that “a couple million” Americans will have new health coverage as of New Year’s Day. But behind the scenes, federal health officials have been pressing the insurance industry to give people more time to sign up. According to insurance industry executives, federal officials have been asking health plans to provide insurance starting Jan. 1 even for customers who sign up after a looming deadline on Monday. While some plans have agreed, many are rebuffing the request because they cannot logistically accommodate it or out of frustration with a series of late-breaking rule changes
Significant security vulnerabilities are still being uncovered in the Obama administration´s health-insurance Web site, nearly three months after the launch of HealthCare.gov. Officials discovered two such vulnerabilities, known as "high findings," within the last month, including one this week, Teresa Fryer, the chief information security officer for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told the House Oversight Committee this week in an interview. Fryer said that both issues were being addressed. The debate over the security of HealthCare.gov has raised questions about whether similar vulnerabilities exist in systems across the federal government. Because the Internal Revenue Service, the Social
In the Obama administration’s continuing rule by decree, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced that those whose health insurance policies were terminated (notwithstanding Obama’s vow to the contrary) will be allowed to buy catastrophic coverage and will be exempt from the statutory penalty if they choose to escape from Obamacare next year. Robert Pear reports in the Times that Sebelius “disclosed the sudden policy shift in a letter to Senator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia, and five other senators.” Here’s the beauty part. The announcement falls under Obamacare’s hardship exemption applicable to those who “experienced financial or domestic circumstances, including
LOS ANGELES — When the A&E network suspended "Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson for disparaging gay people, it may have followed a time-honored TV tradition of quickly silencing a star who, for better or worse, speaks his mind. But in doing so it also ruffled the feathers of possibly millions of fans of its most popular show. Fourteen hours after it was learned that Robertson had been placed on indefinite "hiatus" for telling GQ magazine, among other things, that gays are headed to hell, more than a half-million people liked an impromptu Facebook page demanding the show be boycotted until
The Obama administration Thursday night significantly relaxed the rules of the health-care law for millions of consumers whose individual insurance policies have been canceled, saying they could buy bare-bones health plans or entirely avoid the requirement that most Americans have health insurance. The surprise announcement, four days before the Dec. 23 deadline for people to choose coverage that begins on Jan. 1, triggered an immediate backlash from the health insurance industry and raised new fairness questions about a law intended to promote affordable and comprehensive coverage. “This type of last-minute change will cause tremendous instability in the marketplace and lead
The lie of the year, according to Politifact, is “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it.” But the story of the year is a nation waking up to just how radical Obamacare is — which is why it required such outright deception to get it passed in the first place. Obamacare was sold as simply a refinement of the current system, retaining competition among independent insurers but making things more efficient, fair and generous. Free contraceptives for Sandra Fluke. Free mammograms and checkups for you and me. Free (or subsidized) insurance for some 30 million uninsured.
Few could have predicted that the story lines of the hit A&E reality show “Duck Dynasty” and the 2016 presidential contest would converge. But that unexpected mash-up played out Thursday as conservative politicians rushed to defend Phil Robertson, the shaggy-bearded, homespun star of the breakout series, who was suspended by the cable network after his published comments about gays stirred a storm of controversy. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), a likely White House contender whose state is home to the show about a family that runs a duck-hunting gear enterprise, called Robertson and his family “great citizens.” “The politically correct
An Air Force general in charge of nuclear weapons repeatedly drank too much and behaved like a boor last summer during an official trip to Moscow, where he insulted his Russian hosts and hung out with two suspicious women he met at a hotel bar, according to an investigative report released Thursday. Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, who was commander of the Air Force´s arsenal of land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, “acted in a manner that exceeded the limits of accepted standards of good conduct” during a four-day visit to Moscow in July, according to an investigation conducted by the Air Force
The InvestmentWatch blog seems puzzled. They ask “Is Obama Depressed?” The health care website is a bomb. Immigration overhaul is looking more and more like a bust. The allies are aggrieved about surveillance issues. Israel feels betrayed on Iran. The first black president didn’t even bother to go to Gettysburg, where the 150th anniversary of the most important 270-word speech ever given — the 270 words that welded the nation forever to the all-men-are-created-equal doctrine of the Declaration of Independence — would have given him a respite, and maybe a reset. Puzzling issues indeed. The least-engaged, most ideologically ambitious president
As hundreds of thousands continue to occupy Kiev’s Maidan square, and protests rage across Ukraine, plenty of explanations have been offered for the unrest, which was triggered by the Ukrainian president’s considering a closer relationship with Russia. It’s about a clash of economic interests, some say, or the divide between the western and eastern halves of the country, the latter Russian-speaking and much more industrial. While those issues are important, Walter Zaryckyj, executive director for the Center for U.S.-Ukrainian Relations (CUSUR), argues that the mass protests have deeper roots: in Stalin’s great genocide by famine of the Ukrainian people in
Leaders of the nation’s biggest technology firms warned President Obama during a lengthy meeting at the White House on Tuesday that National Security Agency spying programs are damaging their reputations and could harm the broader economy. Cisco Systems has said it is seeing customers, especially overseas, back away from American-branded technology after documents revealed that the NSA enlisted tech firms and also secretly tapped into their data hubs around the world as the agency pursued terrorism suspects. Companies such as IBM, AT&T and Verizon Communications are facing angry shareholders, some of whom have filed
For a few hours, it looked like Americans would quietly accept the suspension of popular “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson for his unfiltered opinions about sin, sex, gays and blacks in a magazine interview. But then, as if on cue, hundreds of thousands of fans of the openly Christian, duck-hunting businessman took to social networks and started their backlash. As of Thursday night, more than 1.1 million people “liked” the “Stand With Phil Robertson” Facebook page, while about the same number had clicked their support for another Facebook page called “Boycott A&E Until Phil Robertson Is Put Back On Duck
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was hospitalized early Friday morning as a “precaution” after feeling ill, a spokesman said, adding that doctors concluded "everything is normal" after testing. “Early this morning, Senator Reid was not feeling well and as a precaution decided to go to the hospital. Tests have been conducted and everything is normal. He is alert, resting and feeling better,” spokesman Adam Jentleson said in a statement. "Doctors have asked that he remain in the hospital for observation so he will not be working today." The Senate is set to finish its business for the year on Friday.
Restaurant chain Cracker Barrel posted Friday night on its Facebook page that it would no longer carry some Duck Dynasty merchandise after Phil Robertson, of the "Duck Commander" company and family, was suspended from the show. The statement reads: Cracker Barrel’s mission is Pleasing People. We operate within the ideals of fairness, mutual respect and equal treatment of all people. These ideals are the core of our corporate culture. We continue to offer Duck Commander products in our stores. We removed selected products which we were concerned might offend some of our guests while we evaluate the situation.
Phil Robertson disrespected gay employees at A&E ... and THAT´S why he was sacked from "Duck Dynasty" ... sources connected with the network tell TMZ. We´re told A&E CEO Nancy Dubuc felt she could not in good conscience ask gay employees to kill themselves for a show when he disrespected them by calling them sinners. Our sources say ... gay employees involved in the production -- and there are a number of them -- were outraged by Phil´s comments to GQ and wanted Dubuc to give him the ax. We´re told Dubuc felt this way ... If Phil had made
The suspension of Phil Robertson from A&E’s Duck Dynasty is outrageous in a nation that values freedom, according to social critic and openly gay, dissident feminist Camille Paglia. “I speak with authority here, because I was openly gay before the ‘Stonewall rebellion,’ when it cost you something to be so. And I personally feel as a libertarian that people have the right to free thought and free speech,” Paglia, a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, said on Laura Ingraham’s radio show Thursday. “In a democratic country, people have the right to be homophobic as well as they have
The wrecking ball swung again toward the crumbling Obamacare edifice yesterday. Ironically, it continues to be the Obama administration that is operating the heavy machinery. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced, in the form of a letter to Democratic senators, that Obamacare’s individual mandate tax will be waived in 2014 for persons who had their policies canceled in 2013 due to Obamacare. At this point, after months of on-the-fly pronouncements, delays, and exemptions (often announced, not coincidentally, in the days just before a major national holiday), perhaps nothing should surprise us anymore about Obamacare’s disastrous rollout. But yesterday’s announcement
Former “American Idol” contestant Clay Aiken offered his thoughts on the scandal surrounding “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson’s anti-gay comments on Thursday night, saying that such comments and attitudes are “built out of fear.” (Snip) “I think it certainly shows that we’ve got a long way to go when it comes to people being accepting and understanding,” Aiken, who came out as gay in 2008, said. “Homophobia, racism …. all of it’s built out of fear. All of it’s out of fear. And if you grow up in an area like Louisiana and you’re not exposed to diversity, then you
Over the last several weeks the Obama White House has been executing a media blitz meant to sell Obamacare to the nation—again. As the final maneuver in that plan, the President is releasing several reports on how Obamacare will affect the states. His message: repealing Obamacare will just be too expensive. "These state reports mark the culmination of a multi-week effort by the White House and supporters of reform to bring a renewed refocus on each of these benefits and what the cost of repealing them would mean," a White House official told reporters at The Hill. Obamacare supporters crafted these reports to
Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano has announced he is gay. Boitano´s personal news comes two days after the figure skater was named to the official United States 2014 Sochi Olympics delegation by President Obama. "While I am proud to play a public role in representing the American Olympic Delegation as a former Olympic athlete, I have always reserved my private life for my family and friends and will continue to do so," Boitano, 50, said in an official statement. (Snip) Boitano joins tennis player Billie Jean King and Olympic ice hockey bronze medalist Caitlin Cahow as the third openly gay athlete
On Friday at the White House, President Obama lashed out at ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl and Fox News’ Ed Henry, explaining that he was self-critical enough that he did not need to hear critical questions from the two of them. “It’s not that I don’t engage in a lot of self-reflection here,” he said in response to a question from Karl. “I promise I beat myself up even worse than you or Ed Henry does, on any given day, but I’ve also got to wake up in the morning and make sure that I do better the next day.” Obama’s
The Robertson family of "Duck Dynasty" fame has rallied around its patriarch, saying his controversial comments on homosexuality are "grounded in the teachings of the Bible." But Scripture is fiercely contested ground, and some experts say Phil Robertson misinterprets a key Bible verse. A&E, the network that broadcasts the hugely popular "Duck Dynasty" show, suspended Robertson for a now infamous interview with GQ magazine. In the article, Robertson, who became a born-again Christian in the 1970s after a prodigal youth, is asked to define "sin." Here´s what Robertson says: “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around
The A&E Network’s suspension of Phil Robertson, star of the most popular reality show in the history of television, for espousing views on homosexuality identical to those found in the New Testament may not be the first PC lynching in the history of our country, but it is certainly now the most prominent. It is also a singular example of how political correctness, via cultural relativism, is used to undermine democracy and freedom of speech and is, at its core, fascistic. Yes, I just used the f-word and quite deliberately. PC and cultural relativism are the godchildren of Martin Heidegger
