According to one of them Miller "got even with such "turncoats" and "informers" in both The Crucible and A View From the Bridge. " He also abandoned his Down Syndrome son Daniel, against his wife´s wishes, because he didn´t want his daughter to grow up around him. His daughter Rebecca is married to the actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who regularly visited Daniel, who "is said to have lived in an overcrowded Connecticut institution that was sued in the 1980s over its poor living conditions." Day-Lewis, who was "appalled" at the treatment of Daniel, finally convinced Miller to remember his son in his will six weeks before Miller died in 2005.

Marilyn would have been highly impressionable. She sought out father figures, starting from her time as a starlet when she became infatuated with agent Johnny Hyde and then onto marriages to Joe Di Maggio and later Arthur Miller. She was an intelligent, albeit impressionable, woman.
