at White House Friday

The Hill [Washington DC], by Amie Parnes

Original Article

President Obama will meet with Congressional leaders Friday afternoon at the White House just days before the so-called fiscal cliff deadline, when taxes are slated to increase. Obama will host Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), according to a White House official. (Snip) The sitdown at the White House also comes as GOP leaders announced on Thursday that the House will come back into session on Sunday, just hours before the deadline.

Lets all hold hands and make the plunge together. It´s not the fall that kills you, it´s the sudden stop.

This is sickening political theater.

“Grief turns out to be a place none of us know until we reach it,” writes Joan Didion in The Year of Magical Thinking. “We might expect if the death is sudden to feel shock. We do not expect the shock to be obliterative, dislocating to both body and mind.” We cannot know, she says, when we lose the person we love—as she lost her husband John Gregory Dunne 11 years ago—“the unending absence that follows, the void, the very opposite of meaning, the relentless succession of moments during which we will confront the experience of meaninglessness itself.” The tragedy

Barack Obama may be the President of the United States, and while he’s flopping badly in that role, he is quickly building up a formidable entertainment career. Fresh from appearing on Funny or Die’s “Between Two Ferns,” Obama stepped up a few notches to Ryan Seacrest’s national radio show. Entertainment industry insiders, agents and teenage girls know what a coup it is for any talent to get a few minutes with Seacrest, and Obama made the most of his visit. Take a listen. (Video) Seacrest, widely regarded as the king of entertainment media these days, complimented Obama for appearing comfortable

A group of 32 surviving crew members who served on the Battleship Texas during World War II were honored as part of the 100th anniversary celebration Wednesday (March 12). Veterans arrived from all parts of the country with family members for the reunion celebration. The group gathered onboard the ship along with VIP guests and elected officials for a special ceremony to pay tribute to the ship’s veterans. “This is the most special thing that has happened to me in my life,” said 87-year-old Gordon Jones, who served as an ammunition handler aboard the ship from 1944 to 1945. “It

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- After frigid February, March promises relief, at least in the form of holidays celebrated with food for the rest of this month. There will be corned beef on St. Patrick´s Day and sfingi on St. Joseph´s Day. (See Mr. Gragnani´s online article on Monday for some of those Italian traditions.) Yesterday was Pi Day — it will be the 3/14 number to fete — an event that required the enjoyment of food with a circumference like, say, a blueberry pie. But does anyone acknowledge the Ides of March anymore? Today, the 15th, after all, marks the 1,970th

The Obama administration is planning a workaround to the health care law that would extend the March 31 enrollment deadline for health care coverage for some users if technical glitches prevent them from signing up on HealthCare.gov, The Wall Street Journal reported. Under the plan, people who can demonstrate that they were unable to sign up for coverage before the deadline because of website problems would be able to sign up after March 31, officials familiar with the matter told the newspaper. Details of the workaround are still being hammered out, including how long the special sign-up period would last

Quiznos launched a major expansion plan several years ago but quickly retreated, closing many of its newly opened franchise locations. LITTLE ROCK, Ark.- A federal judge Friday struck down Arkansas´ attempt to ban most abortions beginning 12 weeks into a woman´s pregnancy, saying viability, not a heartbeat, remains the key factor in determining whether abortions should be allowed. U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright last year had stopped enforcement of the law while she reviewed it, and on Friday she declared that it was unconstitutional. She cited previous court decisions that said abortions shouldn´t be restricted until after a fetus reaches viability, which is typically at 22 to 24 weeks. Fertility is the missing chapter in sex education. Sobering facts about women’s declining fertility after their 20s are being withheld from ambitious young women, who are propelled along a career track devised for men. The refusal by public schools’ sex-education programs to acknowledge gender differences is betraying both boys and girls. The genders should be separated for sex counseling. It is absurd to avoid the harsh reality that boys have less to lose from casual serial sex than do girls, who risk pregnancy and whose future fertility can be compromised by disease. Boys need lessons in basic ethics and moral reasoning
